I am passing parameters to UserControl. In the UserControl itself, there is a RadioButton to which the ToggleButton style is attached. In fact, in the style itself there are Text and Icon elements; they need to be passed a parameter, it must be bound via x: Bind. If I assign TargetType="local:MenuButton" it throws a XAML parsing error. If you use TemplateBinding it will throw an error global::System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Break()

If you want to change the style of the radio button like adding some extra control and you want to use binding to pass data to it, you will need to create a custom radiobutton.
Create a new class file called MyRadioButton. Inherited from Radiobutton
Get the default style of the RadioButton and change its target type to MyRadioButton.
Apply that style in the MyRadioButton class by setting the DefaultStyleKey property
Create two DependencyProperties in the MyRadioButton class so you could use binding to pass data to the MyRadioButton class.
Go to the style for MyRadioButton. Add controls as you want which uses the new data.
Here is the simple sample I made, you could refer to this.
MyRadioButton.cs
public class MyRadioButton :RadioButton
{
public MyRadioButton()
{
this.DefaultStyleKey = typeof(MyRadioButton);
this.DataContext = this;
}
// create a string property
public string customText
{
get { return (string)GetValue(customTextProperty); }
set { SetValue(customTextProperty, value); }
}
// Using a DependencyProperty as the backing store for customText. This enables animation, styling, binding, etc...
public static readonly DependencyProperty customTextProperty =
DependencyProperty.Register("customText", typeof(string), typeof(MyRadioButton), new PropertyMetadata(null,new PropertyChangedCallback(OncustomTextChanged)));
// property changed
private static void OncustomTextChanged(DependencyObject d, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e)
{
var value = e.NewValue;
Debug.WriteLine("New Text Value get");
}
//create a image property
public BitmapImage customImage
{
get { return (BitmapImage)GetValue(customImageProperty); }
set { SetValue(customImageProperty, value); }
}
// Using a DependencyProperty as the backing store for customImage. This enables animation, styling, binding, etc...
public static readonly DependencyProperty customImageProperty =
DependencyProperty.Register("customImage", typeof(BitmapImage), typeof(MyRadioButton), new PropertyMetadata(null, new PropertyChangedCallback(OncustomImageChanged)));
private static void OncustomImageChanged(DependencyObject d, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e)
{
var value = e.NewValue;
Debug.WriteLine("New BitmapImage Value get");
}

In trying to bind the color of PlaceholderText in a TextBox, I have elected to try placing the Template into a style I can modify:
<Style x:Key="TextBoxStyle" TargetType="TextBox">
<Setter Property="Template">
...
<ContentPresenter x:Name="PlaceholderTextContentPresenter" Foreground="{Binding HintTextColor}" />
My UserControl:
<UserControl x:Name="This"
<TextBox
Style="{StaticResource TextBoxStyle}"
x:Name="_textBox"
/>
/>
I've tried variations on:
Foreground="{Binding DataContext.HintTextColor, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type UserControl}}}}"
Also tried (no binding errors)
<ContentPresenter x:Name="PlaceholderTextContentPresenter" Foreground="{Binding ElementName=This.DataContext.HintTextColor}" />
Trying to connect the Foreground to the correct DataContext and color property, but either the syntax is supported only in WPF or I get a binding error in output. How do I bind the Foreground to the control view model HintTextColor?
Edit
The final solution looks like this for me:
<UserControl
<customControlsUwp:CustomTextBox
PlaceholderForeground="{Binding HintTextColor, Converter={StaticResource StringColorToBrushConverter}}"
/>
/>
public sealed class CustomTextBox : TextBox {
public CustomTextBox() {
DefaultStyleKey = typeof(CustomTextBox);
}
private ContentPresenter _placeholderTextContentPresenter;
public SolidColorBrush PlaceholderForeground {
get => (SolidColorBrush)GetValue(PlaceholderForegroundProperty);
set => SetValue(PlaceholderForegroundProperty, value);
}
//Add DP PlaceholderForeground for runtime bound changes to HintTextColor
public static readonly DependencyProperty PlaceholderForegroundProperty =
DependencyProperty.Register("PlaceholderForeground", typeof(SolidColorBrush), typeof(CustomTextBox), new PropertyMetadata(null, PropertyChangedCallback));
public static void PropertyChangedCallback(DependencyObject d, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e) {
if (!(d is CustomTextBox customTextBox) || !(e.NewValue is SolidColorBrush solidColorBrush))
return;
if (customTextBox._placeholderTextContentPresenter == null)
customTextBox._placeholderTextContentPresenter.Foreground = solidColorBrush;
}
protected override void OnApplyTemplate() {
base.OnApplyTemplate();
_placeholderTextContentPresenter = GetTemplateChild("PlaceholderTextContentPresenter") as ContentPresenter;
}
}
And added a template binding in the control style to capture the first value set:
<ContentPresenter x:Name="PlaceholderTextContentPresenter" Foreground="{TemplateBinding PlaceholderForeground}" Grid.ColumnSpan="2" Content="{TemplateBinding PlaceholderText}" IsHitTestVisible="False" Margin="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" Padding="{TemplateBinding Padding}" Grid.Row="1" TextWrapping="{TemplateBinding TextWrapping}"/>
UWP doesn't support Binding in style. You could see the Migration notes section in MSDN document.
You could make a custom TextBox and define a dependency property named as PlaceholderForeground. In its override OnApplyTemplate method, you could get the "PlaceholderTextContentPresenter" ContentPresenter control from its default style's template. Then, when your dependency property is changed, you could set the new value to the "PlaceholderTextContentPresenter".Foreground.
public class CustomTextBox : TextBox
{
private ContentPresenter _PlaceholderTextContentPresenter;
public SolidColorBrush PlaceholderForeground
{
get { return (SolidColorBrush)GetValue(PlaceholderForegroundProperty); }
set { SetValue(PlaceholderForegroundProperty, value); }
}
// Using a DependencyProperty as the backing store for MyProperty. This enables animation, styling, binding, etc...
public static readonly DependencyProperty PlaceholderForegroundProperty =
DependencyProperty.Register("PlaceholderForeground", typeof(SolidColorBrush), typeof(CustomTextBox), new PropertyMetadata(null, PropertyChangedCallback));
public static void PropertyChangedCallback(DependencyObject d, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e)
{
if ((d as CustomTextBox)._PlaceholderTextContentPresenter !=null)
{
(d as CustomTextBox)._PlaceholderTextContentPresenter.Foreground = e.NewValue as SolidColorBrush;
}
}
protected override void OnApplyTemplate()
{
_PlaceholderTextContentPresenter = GetTemplateChild("PlaceholderTextContentPresenter") as ContentPresenter;
}
public CustomTextBox()
{
DefaultStyleKey = typeof(CustomTextBox);
}
}

I am trying to implement a Textbox which has a validation sign at the end next to the "X" which shows up, when the input is valid. The DataTemplate implementation is no problem but I am unsure on how to implement the logic.
One way would be a TextChanged event and then try to access the ValidSign element inside the DataTemplate. But I am not very fond of this method.
Is there a way to extend the TextBox logic since there must be some code-behind for the "X" button in the first place?
You can achieve that using VisualState. Here's an example: The idea is to create a custom textbox by subclassing the TextBox class, customize the default textbox style, add visual states and add a star beside the DeleteButton.
This class is a custom textbox that inherits from the TextBox class. In here, we set the visual state of the control depending on the value of the dependency property HasError. If HasError is true, we go to InvalidState, else we go to ValidState.
public class ValidatingTextBox : TextBox
{
public ValidatingTextBox()
{
// Tells this control to use the ValidatingTextBox style.
// This will be the customized textbox style below.
this.DefaultStyleKey = typeof(ValidatingTextBox);
}
public bool HasError
{
get { return (bool)GetValue(HasErrorProperty); }
set { SetValue(HasErrorProperty, value); }
}
/// <summary>
/// This is a dependency property that will indicate if there's an error.
/// This DP can be bound to a property of the VM.
/// </summary>
public static readonly DependencyProperty HasErrorProperty =
DependencyProperty.Register("HasError", typeof(bool), typeof(ValidatingTextBox), new PropertyMetadata(false, HasErrorUpdated));
// This method will update the Validation visual state which will be defined later in the Style
private static void HasErrorUpdated(DependencyObject d, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e)
{
ValidatingTextBox textBox = d as ValidatingTextBox;
if (textBox != null)
{
if (textBox.HasError)
VisualStateManager.GoToState(textBox, "InvalidState", false);
else
VisualStateManager.GoToState(textBox, "ValidState", false);
}
}
}
Next we need to copy the default TextBox style and customize it by adding the visual state and the start mark that will indicate that there's a validation error.

The code above is the whole style but here are the lines that you need to focus to.
This is the part where we added the visual states. We added a couple of visual states which is the ValidState and InvalidState. When on the ValidState, the visibility of the element named "ValidationMark" is set to Visible. When on InvalidState, it should be Collapsed.
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="ValidationState">
<VisualState x:Name="InvalidState">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="ValidationMark"
Storyboard.TargetProperty="Visibility">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame.Value>
<Visibility>Visible</Visibility>

</DiscreteObjectKeyFrame>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
<VisualState x:Name="ValidState">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="ValidationMark"

<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame.Value>
<Visibility>Collapsed</Visibility>
</DiscreteObjectKeyFrame.Value>
</DiscreteObjectKeyFrame>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
</VisualStateGroup>
And this is the part where the star mark is added after the DeleteButton.
<Button x:Name="DeleteButton"
Grid.Row="1"
Style="{StaticResource DeleteButtonStyle}"
BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}"
Margin="{ThemeResource HelperButtonThemePadding}"
IsTabStop="False"
Grid.Column="1"
Visibility="Collapsed"
FontSize="{TemplateBinding FontSize}"
MinWidth="34"
VerticalAlignment="Stretch"/>
<TextBlock Text="*" FontSize="24" FontWeight="SemiBold" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Grid.Row="1" Grid.Column="2"
Foreground="Red" Margin="5,2,5,0"
x:Name="ValidationMark"/>
Now in the xaml we just bind the HasError dependency property to a property in the viewmodel that will tell if it is valid or not.
<ctrl:ValidatingTextBox Text="{Binding TextValue, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged, Mode=TwoWay}" HasError="{Binding IsInvalid, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}"/>
For example in the view model we say it's valid when the text is "Valid" other than that it will show the star.
public class TestViewModel : ViewModelBase {
private bool _IsInvalid;
public bool IsInvalid
{
get { return _IsInvalid; }
set { SetProperty(ref _IsInvalid, value); }
}
private string _TextValue;
public string TextValue
{
get
{
return _TextValue;
}
set
{
if (SetProperty(ref _TextValue, value))
{
Validate(_TextValue);
}
}
}
private void Validate(string text)
{
if (text == "Valid")
{
IsInvalid = false;
}
else
{
IsInvalid = true;
}
}
}
I have button created programatically:
Button button = new Button();
ImageBrush background = new ImageBrush();
background.ImageSource = new System.Windows.Media.Imaging.BitmapImage(new Uri(#"Assets/Image1.png", UriKind.Relative));
button.Background = background;
button.Click += button_Click;
Now i when i click on that button i need to remove the default click effect and add my own image, so that when i click on the button the image which i have added should be displayed.
EDIT
The above which had 2 upvotes works but its replacing the background image, but i want both the images to be displayed, onclick only it should add foreground image to my button.
How can i acheive this ?
You need to play with the visual states of a button and you could do it with the help of a style
Just look at the style below
<Style x:Key="style_ColorButton" TargetType="Button">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="{StaticResource PhoneBorderThickness}"/>
<Setter Property="FontFamily" Value="{StaticResource PhoneFontFamilySemiBold}"/>
<Setter Property="FontSize" Value="{StaticResource PhoneFontSizeMediumLarge}"/>
<Setter Property="Padding" Value="10,3,10,5"/>
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="Button">
<Grid Background="Transparent">
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Normal"/>
<VisualState x:Name="MouseOver"/>
<VisualState x:Name="Pressed">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground" Storyboard.TargetName="ContentContainer">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneBackgroundBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background" Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame.Value>
<ImageBrush Stretch="Fill" ImageSource="/Images/ColorClicked.png"/>
</DiscreteObjectKeyFrame.Value>
</DiscreteObjectKeyFrame>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="BorderBrush" Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
<VisualState x:Name="Disabled">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground" Storyboard.TargetName="ContentContainer">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneDisabledBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="BorderBrush" Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground">

</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background" Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="Transparent"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
</VisualStateGroup>
</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<Border x:Name="ButtonBackground" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" CornerRadius="0">
<ContentControl x:Name="ContentContainer" ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding ContentTemplate}" Content="{TemplateBinding Content}" Foreground="{TemplateBinding Foreground}" HorizontalContentAlignment="{TemplateBinding HorizontalContentAlignment}" Padding="{TemplateBinding Padding}" VerticalContentAlignment="{TemplateBinding VerticalContentAlignment}"/>
</Border>
</Grid>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
In the style above VisualState "Pressed" Handles your requirement and I have given an Image source there.
Using this style with a button.
<Button Height="40" Width="40" BorderThickness="0" Name="btnAcceptCrop" Click="btnAcceptCrop_Click" Style="{StaticResource style_ColorButton}" Background="Black" ForeGround="White"/>
setting the style in code
btnAcceptCrop.Style = (Style)App.Current.Resources["style_ColorButton"];
Declaring a style in a Page
Below all the namespace declaration in your page
Just make a tag
<phone:PhoneApplicationPage.Resources>
</phone:PhoneApplicationPage.Resources>
and declare your style inside it.
Hope this helps.
I have a simple problem, but I'm new to Silverlight.
I have a textbox, transparent, but when I got focus, textfield background will come white.
How to solve?
You just need to either edit the "FocusedState" in the VisualStateManager for the Default control template, or provide your own like the one provided below in either a Resource Dictionary or in your UserControl.Resources etc.
Here's how you would apply the Style Template Below to your TextBox Instance
<TextBox Style="{StaticResource YourCustomTextBoxStyle}/>
Here's a Default WP7 TextBox Style Template with the proper place Adjusted...
<Style x:Key="YourCustomTextBoxStyle" TargetType="TextBox">
<Setter Property="FontFamily" Value="{StaticResource PhoneFontFamilyNormal}"/>
<Setter Property="FontSize" Value="{StaticResource PhoneFontSizeMediumLarge}"/>
<Setter Property="Background" Value="{StaticResource PhoneTextBoxBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{StaticResource PhoneTextBoxForegroundBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="{StaticResource PhoneTextBoxBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="SelectionBackground" Value="{StaticResource PhoneAccentBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="SelectionForeground" Value="{StaticResource PhoneTextBoxSelectionForegroundBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="{StaticResource PhoneBorderThickness}"/>
<Setter Property="Padding" Value="2"/>
<Setter Property="Template">

You can also apply this same template to all your TextBox controls by default utilizing BasedOn Values.
There's other ways of doing this with less but this is a good place to begin learning the fundamentals. Hope it helps.
It was more easily!
private void TextBox1_GotFocus(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
{
TextBox tb = (TextBox)sender;
tb.Background = new SolidColorBrush(Colors.Transparent);
tb.BorderBrush = new SolidColorBrush(Colors.Transparent);
tb.SelectionBackground = new SolidColorBrush(Colors.Transparent);
}
private void TextBox1_LostFocus(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
{
TextBox tb = (TextBox)sender;
tb.Background = new SolidColorBrush(Colors.Transparent);
tb.BorderBrush = new SolidColorBrush(Colors.Transparent);
tb.SelectionBackground = new SolidColorBrush(Colors.Transparent);
}
and it works wery well!!
What you are describing is a Visual State.
When the Textbox gets focus, it internally triggers a visual state change, which in this case includes a white background.
It looks like you are working in WP7, so there are a couple of places you can start learning about Control Templates, Styles and how to change them.
First have a look at this article about Control Templates.
You will find that anything Silverlight 4 related is relevant.
Second get a copy of Expression Blend for Windows Phone. Start a new WP7 project, drag a TextBox onto your design surface, right click the TextBox and selected Edit Template. Then you will start to see how easy it can be to change said visual states.
Looks like you want a click to edit style. There is a silverlight example with xaml code in the Click-to-edit control - how to do it? post.
