I am having a weird problem with Visual Studio 2012, .NET 4.5 and WPF.
Views wont find references to any of my clases and I keep receiving the error "The name "..." does not exist in the namespace "clr-namespace" "
while intellisense do find any of my clases
What I've tried:

Moving my classes to other namespaces
I restarted visual studio and my computer
Changed the .NET version and the compilation method (x86/x64)
I created new projects and they have this problem now too... but old project still work...
EVERY time intellisense would find classes but visual studio still throws that error...

Try changing the build target platform and rebuilding. It actually solved the problem for me.
Change your current build target platform to the other one ie x64 if currently x86.
Re-build the entire solution.
Change back to required target platform ie x86 and re-build the solution.

I had similar problem using VS Studio 2017
In order to reproduce the problem I Created a WPF project. Added a user control and referenced the control in the main window.
The problem I had was that my solution was on a file server and not locally on my computer. Moving it to local everything worked as expected. Not sure if this is a bug in VS Studio or not.

Visual studio 2019 go to definition and Intellisense not working

I have noticed a weird issue with Visual Studio 2019 v16.0.1 the IntelliSense about "Using directive is unnecessary" normally grey is missing and type reference suggestion for missing using is not working.
I also tried with Visual Studio 2019 Preview but no luck.
I have tried the following:
deleted .vs folder and restarted.
Reinstalled Visual Studio
Reset settings via import and export setting under tools
Any other suggestions will be appreciated.
Close Visual Studio
Delete .vs folder (it is a hidden folder inside the folder which contains the solution *.sln)
Start Visual Studio

Deleting Browse.VC.db file within .vs folder worked for me. I did this to avoid deleting .suo which has information I want to preserve

Go to Tools -> Options -> Text Editor -> All Languages -> General. Make sure “Auto List Members” is checked. Also, make sure “Parameter Information” is checked.
If you are facing this issue with Unity projects then,
Check in your Unity settings whether it has Visual Studio configured as the external editor.
Click on Regenarate project files in the Unity settings.
Go to Assets => Open C# project.
This will restart Visual Studio with your project.
In my case, Resharper is the culprit. Disabling it immediately solved the issue.

For anyone who are searching for another suggestion, I just go throught this issue, as OP said, I've deleted .vs folder, I've update vs to last version, I've uninstalled and reinstalled vs to the last version, I've reset settings, delete all obj folders, I've installed Microsoft.Net.Compilers but nothing worked, at the end I just remembered that sometimes the projects required WindowsBase library, until now I don't know why, but after adding that dll Intellisense started to function again.
I use resharper (vs 2017) but had not installed it on 2019. After installing Resharper on 2019 the intellisense started working again. (yes, it was working in 2019, then stopped)
I don't have an explanation on why this would fix it. Just did for me.
First time I use VS 2019, I need to manually install Code Analysis. Make sure it is installed at your project properties.
And today, for the new class, the suggestion or namespaces not showing for VS 2019 Intellisense, and Go to Definition not working too.
I must do close solution, and re-open and VS 2019 doing scanning while opening project, and then worked again.
I think this is bug for VS 2019. Try to close solution and re-open it.
I have tried almost all the solution mentioned above but it doesn't helped me. Trying to restart my PC solved my problem.

At the root of our solution there is a packages folder. I deleted the
entire contents of this folder. Upon reopening Visual Studio,
Intellisense and Go To Definition were restored to full working order.

After working for a few months, Intellisense suddenly stopped. This cost me a lot of lost time! I've been worked with Visual Studio for about 10 years, and this problem happens occasionally in every version.
Here's what I tried for this iteration of the problem:
Closing Visual Studio and re-opening does sometimes make the problem disappear for a short time, but it certainly doesn't solve it
Likewise restarting my laptop
Installing the latest Visual Studio 2019 update didn't help (I'm on 16.8.3 now if anyone's interested)
Deleting the hidden .vs folder doesn't seem to solve anything (doing so also means you lose your current window layout, as well as any bookmarks you've set)
Unticking the Track Changes option in this menu: Tools-> Options-> Text Editor-> General.
I've updated my NuGet reference to the Microsoft.Net.Compilers library to the latest stable version, as suggested here, but sadly this made no difference
I thought I've finally solved the problem by following the advice from Homer. I deleted the packages folder at the base level of my project (somewhat nervously, as I wasn't sure if it was needed), and thought it had solved the problem, but no such luck.
However, one thing to watch out for - after doing this, Visual Studio recognised my classes but no longer recognised built-in ones (all the referenced namespaces at the top of my controllers were underlined in red). I then deleted the .vs folder (again), which seemed to solve the problem.
When I recompiled my solution, it gave a few CS0433 compilation errors with duplicate namespaces for the MinLength and MaxLength directives in some identity user name and password validation code. I got round this by removing the Microsoft.EntityFramework Nuget library (I had to also remove Microsoft.AspNet.Identity.EntityFramework too, since this depended on it), then adding them both back in, making sure to include at least version 6.2 of the former (otherwise I got another runtime error to do with the FirstOrDefaultAsync method called somewhere!).
My current situation: all existing Intellisense is working, but it's not recognising new classes I add unless I exit Visual Studio and go back in again. May have to live with this ... unless anyone can help me?
I've got that problem today with only one project. I got no Intellisense warnings (i.e. naming styles, "Variable not referenced", etc..) for files in that project. Not in VS 2017 Pro nor in VS 2019 Community.
Check, if your Project->Build->"Warning level" is set to 0...
If you have Visual Studio 2017 installed side-by-side with Visual Studio 2019, close VS2019, open the project in VS2017, wait until it is fully loaded, then close VS2017, and reopen VS2019 - fixed!
There must be a bug in the VS2019 intellisense stuff, but VS2017 seems to fix it with no need to keep deleting the .vs directory.

Could not find type...Platform issues in Visual Studio

I just jumped back into a project that previously had no issues. We just upgraded to visual studio 2012. This morning I open my project to work on my code. I am getting designer issues all over the place.
"If this type is a part of your development project, make sure that the project has been successfully built using settings for your current platform or Any CPU"
It all seems to be coming from this platform issue. I have had zero issues in the past. I cannot find any information on how to fix this. I even go to open the designer on a file that previously worked (pre VS2012 install) and that fails.
So I went back to VS2010...without changing anything and attempted to open the same designer on the same file that previously worked and I also get an app crash.
Did somehow my visual studio 2012 install cause all of this?
Make sure that you are choosing the right CPU architecture for your designer. If it is ARM then you might see that message. You can check your CPU settings for your project like this:

New WPF Project Won't Compile -- Throws Error "The name 'InitializeComponent' does not exist in the current context"

I'm getting started with WPF, but when I create a new WPF project (usuing all default options) it won't compile after VS generates the project. (Both under C# and VB) I believe I'm running the latest/greatest VS (which is maybe the problem?)

Best I could tell none of the answers here provided any help at all. The namespaces/class names are all correct.
Did you change a file name at any point?
Try Rebuild (not Build).
Uninstalled the .Net frameworks and reinstalled them and everything works again! BTW, tried reinstalling VS and that had no effect, don't waste your time.

However, it worked briefly before the problem started, so I'm not sure if this solution had anything to do with the new problem or not. Just be aware.

Visual Studio 2012 csc.exe Error. Executable not valid for OS

I am getting the following error when trying to compile and test any type of project in Visual Studio 2012 Professional.
Error 1 The specified task executable "Csc.exe" could not be run. The
specified executable is not a valid application for this OS platform.
After testing multiple suggestions online nothing has fixed the problem. Anyone know what is causing this? Is there a new version of Csc.exe I need to get a hold of? I know this is the compiler just not sure what I need to do to fix the problem.
I had this exact problem today on my Win7 Machine. As Hans suggests, 'Navigate to C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319 and type "csc".'
The file may still exist but if you can open it with notepad, it will probably show just plain text of some errors. This is the indication that your compiler has been destroyed. At my office we have come up with a theory that a Windows update may be causing this because only a few machines have been affected, but I haven't read much online about it until now.
We fixed this by copying someone else's csc.exe into the C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319 directory and recompiling. Be sure to set the options on the file to read-only so this won't happen again. Good Luck!
The problems associated with csc.exe in Visual Studio 2012 can mostly be solved by repairing Visual Studio.
You need to repair Visual Studio. Go to Control Panel -> Programs. Then select your version of Visual Studio you are using and press "Change"(or right click it and press "Change"). When the setup appears, click "Repair".
I am on Visual Studio 2017 but this is the first google result that pops up for "csc.exe not found"
When I got this error I had to restart Visual Studio, being sure to select 'Run As Administrator'. Everything worked after that
I've faced this problem while i am trying to move Asp.Net Mvc Project from one computer to another ; error message was : The specified task executable location "c:\users\mypcname\documents\visual studio 2015\Projects\TestMVC\packages\Microsoft.Net.Compilers.1.0.0\build\..\tools\csc.exe" is invalid.
I solved this by
Creating new Mvc Project ;
going to that folder \Microsoft.Net.Compilers.1.0.0\build..\tools
and Copied the csc.exe file to my Projets >> \Microsoft.Net.Compilers.1.0.0\build..\tools\
i think when i was copying the project from the original Computer i left that csc.exe file in the specified folder.

Check your solution properties (right-click on Solution and select 'Properties') and make sure that the 'platform' field (Configuration Properties) is set correctly.
I think this problem is caused due to improper PC clean up. I was running Quick Heal PCTuner 3.0 software on a 64-bit windows 7 machine but suddenly due to loss of power my machine was shut down then when i opened it again I was getting this problem in VS 2013. Even TortoiseSVN checkout was not working and throwing internal error and something like corrupted disk also was shown when trying to delete some files on the harddisk.
I ran the PC Tuner again doing the Disk, Registry and traces clean up and it got fixed. maybe this problem may occur due to other cases also but is mostly related to the system's files In my case this is the fix

On Visual Studio 2013, the same problem solved by doing this for me:
Right click the solution and open Configuration Manager. For the project(you may see at least one there), I've changed the Platform from Any CPU to x86 for the project that may causing the problem.
I've tried to delete and move csc.exe file but it doesn't do anything.
Then simply I upgrade .net version and than downgrade (returned to its original state) and it works.
I solved my problem by copying the whole folder containing my visual studio solution

I have two projects, ProjectA and ProjectB. ProjectB is a console application, which depends on ProjectA. Yesterday, everything was working fine, but suddenly today when I run ProjectB I get this:
BadImageFormatException was unhandled:
Could not load file or assembly 'ProjectA, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.
Both are just regular projects, with no dependencies on any other non-.Net projects. Both are fully .Net - there is no native code, and no P/Invoke. I have other projects which depend on ProjectA and still work just fine.
Things I have tried:
Make sure both projects are set to "Any CPU," with the build checkbox checked. They are.
Make sure both projects are for the same Target Framework (.Net 4.0 Client Profile).
Under ProjectB --> References --> ProjectA --> Properties, make sure "Copy Local" is set to "True" _ (I verified that ProjectA.dll is being copied correctly)
Clean/Rebuild the solution. I even tried manually deleting the /bin and /obj folders in both projects.
Restart Visual Studio. Restart my computer.
Check out an entirely new copy of the repository.
But I still get the same error. I have no idea what I did to cause this, nor how to fix it. Any ideas?
I am pretty sure you're having a 32-bit / 64-bit conflict. It sounds like your main project might be set to 32-bit while the class its referencing is set to 64-bit. Try looking at this SO question and this one too. Between the two of them, you should be able to figure out your problem.
Might be you are facing the problem with your website after deploying on server.
Then you need to adjust your application pool to Enable 32-Bit Applications.
Steps
Open IIS Manager
Click on Application Pools
Select whatever application pool you are using
From right pane, click Advanced Settings...
Set Enable 32-Bit Applications to True
I just had this error message running IIS Express in Visual Studio 2015. In my case I needed to be running the 64 bit version of IIS Express:

I had this same problem. I had set Project A's "Platform Target" ("Project A"(Right Click)->Properties->Build->"Platform Target") to x86 but kept Project B's at "Any CPU". Setting Project B's to "x86" fixed this.
I had this problem running unit tests (xunit) in Visual Studio 2015 and came across the following fix:
Menu Bar -> Test -> Test Settings -> Default Processor Architecture -> X64
You may need to change the Appication Pool setting "Enable 32bit Applications" to TRUE in IIS7 if you have at least 1 32bit dll\exe in your project.
First of all I got this in VS2017 with an old project I needed to make a tiny change to and upraded all the projects to framework 4.7.
Several others have mentioned selecting Any CPU can fix this issue.
There's a couple places you need to do it, and it might not just be as simple as selecting from the dropdown. This fixed it for me:

I had the same issue with multiple projects in the same solution, i ended up setting all of the target frameworks to .NET Framework 4 and x86 for the target CPU and it finally successfully compiled.
None of these solutions worked for me - but by deleting the contents of bin and obj folders everything was cool again.
The following solved the issue for me, uncheck 'Prefer

For the newer version of visual studio (v16.10 for this answer), it can be fixed by manually changing the solution platform. For me it worked after changing from "Any CPU" to "x86".
Click on solutions platform dropdown, the one in which any CPU is appearing in image below.
Go to configuration manager.
Click on new and add platform x86 or x64 (32 or 64 bits) based on what is working for you.
Restart the project.
I also had this problem. As mention before the problem was related to a 32-bit / 64-bit conflict, but with the site hosted in Azure. To change the plattform in Azure App Service, go to Configuration -> General settings.
I got this when building a project via Visual Studio Online (VSTS) Build using Visual Studio Build Steps.
The solution was:
Delete the existing source folder
Explicitly set 'Any CPU' in the platform for all Visual Studio Builds including dependencies (see screenshot below).
Re-run the build
The Chilkat .NET 4.5 assembly requires the VC++ 2012 or 2013 runtime to be installed on any computer where your application runs. Most computers will already have it installed. Your development computer will have it because Visual Studio has been installed. However, if deploying to a computer where the required VC++ runtime is not available, the above error will occur:

In my case changing IIS Express Bitness from "Default" to "x86" helped.
All my projects had "x86" as the Platform target.
You might also see this issue if you're trying to package a 64bit project with an MSI installer in VS. ("The reason is because the native shim packaged with the .msi file is a 32-bit executable.")

I encountered the same issue. It popped up out of the blue and that seemed strange to me.
In the Exception snapshot, for the FusionLog, I saw the following within its message:

All the projects had a Target CPU of AnyCPU. I changed the application project (the project that references all the other projects) to a Target CPU of x86. It now works.
Not sure how the Target CPU mix up occurred for no apparent reason, but it did.

this problem is due to CPU configuration,
If you are using Visual Studio 2010 or VS 2013, just goto project 's properties and then select Compile from side bar and there will be 5 drop-down, 5th Drop-down will be Target CPU:, you should set it to x86 or x64 according to your requirements instead of Any CPU.
My problem was solved after changing it to x86.
This also can happen just by having multiple supported frameworks defined in the app.config file and, forcing the app to run in a different .NET framework other than the one mentioned first in the app.config file.
And also this fires when you have both of the mentioned frameworks available in your system.
As a workaround, bring up the target framework you are going to use for the debugging up in the app.config
ex: if you trying to run in .NET 4, config file should have something similar to this,

Shoot! I knew about this problem. I thought I was doing everything right until I accidentally saw 'x86' in the VS output window and that's when I got hold of the cause. Wasted a few mins on it today.
The configuration under 'Publish' window was set to 'x86'; whereas, everywhere else, it was 'x64'.
Please make sure it's in-sync across configuration manager, publish settings, solution configurations, and IIS settings (if that's your web server).
Also, please keep in mind - VS is a 32-bit app and IIS is 64 bit. 32-bit apps are disabled by default in IIS.
It can be a little funny, but I had the same problem with normal working code. I added StreamWriter and StreamReader and it gave that error.
The solution was I took that code into comment brackets then did debug and it started to work again
If you use LibreOffice from your program via cli .net integration like me, I got the same error. I use the older version of LibreOffice on the production environment on my PC I installed a newer version that was in conflict. Just uninstall LibreOffice. In my case a dependency was missing in the dll that threw this exception. I checked with Dependency Walker, added the missing dll and the problem was resolved.
More specifically, I somehow corrupted my opencv_core340.dll by accidentally adding SVN keywords to it, and thus my dll could no longer use it. However I don't believe that the solution to this problem depends on whether the dll is corrupted or missing. I'm just adding this for the sake of giving complete information.
I have detected something different from the other answers. Reaching this exception in my project was the result of a corrupt compilation. Without making any changes, just forcing rebuild, it was fixed.
I had the same issue. Project B in my case was a .Net Core Class Library which has a Nuget "Microsoft.Management.Infrastructure" installed. The error was that i called my project B "MI". I changed the project name to something else and suddenly everything worked again.
Interesting as it goes, this can also happen if the folder path is long, which can cause build issues, oddly enough with this cryptic error message.
Just moving the folder up the path, solved the problem!
Are you trying to run your .exe file from the cmd? This was my mistake. Just run the .exe file by double clicking it. If it's a .NET Core SCD for Windows 8.1/Windows Server 2012 R2 x64.
In my case the error was System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'vjslib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies.
It was solved by installing vjredist 64 from here.
