I am creating an XML file which is based upon the Atom 1.0 specification. The .net Syndication classes are ideal for producing the Atom elements of my document but I need to extend this class so that I can create my own elements like below using strongly types C# classes. What is the best way to extend these classes so to get my desired results?

I have tried to create my own Feed and Item by inheriting from SyndicationFeed and SyndicationItem respectively but this means I will have to create my own feedFormatter class as the Atom10FeedFormatter class only takes SyndicationItems as parameters. I think I am going to have to create the following classes to get my desired result but wanted to put it to the community to see if its the correct way to go an if anybody else has done anything similar.

The .NET Syndication Feed supports extensions. It's possible through SyndicationFeed.ElementExtensions and SyndicationFeed.AttributeExtensions.

I started off doing it this way but I need a way and even created some Extension Methods but I need to make the whole document creation process type safe.
Therefore I have created elements as objects (see below) which have public properties as there attributes. By just using the extensions I am leaving it open to errors if fields are incorrectly spelt etc and thus not having a valid XML doc.

You need 2 things to achieve this :
1) Valid xml
2) C# class which has same data members as in your input xml.
You need to create one object of C# class then enumerate through all the elements of xml and when by using switch for each of the element name, you can take inner text property of that element and assign it to respective data member of object.
C# code might look like following (you need to fill in the gaps):

I don't think there's a ready-made dynamic solution to this. If I understand your question correctly, you would like to do something like this.

The closest I can think of you could get to that, is to use XElement classes, something like this:
XElement test = XElement.Parse(yourteststring);
var rep1 = test.Element("SomeElement").Element("rep1");
If that's not good enough, I'm afraid you will have to write something yourself that will parse the xml and create the object on the fly. If you know in advance what the xml will look like, you could use shekhars code, but I guess from your comments that you don't.
If you have schema for xml available and if this is needed in dev/build environment then a round about way to do this will be
Use XSD tool to parse schema and generate code from it
Build the generated code using command line complier or compiler services to generate assmebly. Now you have a type available there that can be used.
Needless to say this will be a quite slow and out-of-proc tools will be used here.
Another (not an easy way but faster) way that would not have dev env dependencies would be to parse your xml and generate dynamic type using reflection. See this article to check how to use Reflection.Emit
I'm developing a system to pick up XML attachments from emails, via Exchange Web Services, and enter them into a DB, via a custom DAL object that I've created.
I've manage to extract the XML attachment and have it ready as a stream... they question is how to parse this stream and populate a DAL object.
I can create an XMLTextReader and iterate through each element. I don't see any problems with this other than that I suspect there is a much slicker way. The reader seems to treat the opening tag, the content of the tag and the closing tag as different elements (using reader.NodeType). I expected myValue to be considered one element rather than three. Like I said, I can get round this problem, but I'm sure there must be a better way.
I came across the idea of using an XML Serializer (completely new to me) but a quick look suggested that these can't handle ArrayLists and List (I'm using List).
Again, I'm new to LINQ, but LINQ-to-XML has also been mentioned, but examples I've seen seem rather complex - though that my simply be my lack of familiarity.
Basically, I don't want a cludged system, but I don't want to use any complicated technique with a learning curve, just because it's 'cool'.
What is the simplest and most effective way of translating this XML/Stream in to my DAL objects?

I'm trying to deserialize, based on Graham's example. I think I've set up the DAL for serialization, including specifying [XmlElement("whatever")] for each property. And I've tried to deserialize using the following:
SalesEnquiry enquiry = null;
XmlSerializer serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(SalesEnquiry));
enquiry = (SalesEnquiry)serializer.Deserialize(stream);
However, I get an exception:'There is an error in XML document (2, 2)'. The innerexception states {"<enquiry xmlns=''> was not expected."}
Conclusion (updated):
My previous problem was the fact that the element in the XML file (Enquiry) != the name of the class (SalesEnquiry). Rather than an [XmlElement] attribute for the class, we need an [XmlRoot] attribute instead. For completeness, if you want a property in your class to be ignored during serialization, you use the [XmlIgnore] attribute.
I've successfully serialized my object, and have now successfully taken the incoming XML and de-serialized it into a SalesEnquiry object.
This approach is far easier than manually parsing the XML. OK, there has been a steep learning curve, but it was worth it.

If your XML uses a schema (i.e. you're always going to know what elements appear, and where they appear in the tree), you could use XmlSerializer to create your objects. You'd just need some attributes on your classes to tell the serializer what XML elements or attributes they correspond to. Then you just load up your XML, create a new XmlSerializer with the type of the .NET object you want to create, and call the Deserialize method.
For example, you have a class like this:

public int Age { get; set; }

Based on your last update, I would guess that either you need to specify an XmlRoot attribute on the class that's acting as your root element (i.e. SalesEnquiry), or the XmlSerializer might be a bit confused that you're referencing an empty namespace in your XML (xmlns='' doesn't seem right).
XmlSerializer does support arrays & lists... as long as the contained type is serializable.
I have found Xsd2Code very helpful for this kind of thing: http://xsd2code.codeplex.com/
Basically, all you need to do is write an xsd file (an XML schema file) and specify a few command line switches. Xsd2Code will automatically generate a C# class file that contains all the classes and properties plus everything needed to handle the serialization. It's not a perfect solution as it doesn't support all aspects of XSD, but if your XML files are relatively simple collections of elements and attributes, it should be a nice short-cut for you.
There's another similar project on Codeplex called Linq to XSD (http://linqtoxsd.codeplex.com/), which was designed to enforce the entire XSD specification, but last time I checked, it was no longer being supported and not really ready for prime time. Thought it was worth a mention, though.
If I am dealing with several standard xml formats what would be the best practice way of encapsulating them in C# 3.5? I'd like to end up with something similar to the System.ServiceModel.Syndication namespace.
A class that encapsulates the ADF 1.0 XML standard would be one example. It has the main XML root node, 6 child elements, 4 of which are required IIRC, several required and optional elements and attributes further down the tree. I'd like the class to create, at a minimum, the XML for all the required pieces all the way up to a full XML representation. (Make sense).
With LINQ 4 XML and extension classes, etc, etc, there has to be some ideas on quickly generating a class structure for use. Yes? No? :)
Am not sure if I gave enough details to get one correct answer but am willing to entertain ideas right now.

XML serialization seems a good approach. You could even use xsd.exe to generate the classes automatically...

Note that the class names generated by the tool are usually not very convenient, so you might want to rename them. You might also want to change arrays of T to List<T>, so that you can easily add items where needed.
Assuming the class for the root element is named ADF, you can load an ADF document as follows :

Why not just follow the pattern of the SyndicationFeed object in the Syndication namespace? Create a class that takes in a Uri to the xml document or just takes in the document fragment.
Then parse the document based on your standards (this parsing can be done using LinqToXml if you wanted to, though regEx might be faster if you are comfortable with them). Throw exceptions or track errors appropriately when the document doesn't pass the specification rules.
If the document passes the parse step then break the pieces of the document out into public getter properties of your object. Then return the fully hydrated object back to the consumer for use
Seems pretty straight forward to me. Is that what you are after or are you looking for something more than this?
SOME CONTEXT
one of my projects requires carrying around some of "metadata" (yes I hate using that word).
What the metadata specifically consists of is not important, only that it's more complex than a simple "table" or "list" - you could think of it as a mini-database of information
Currently I have this metadata stored in an XML file and have an XSD that defines the schema.
I want to package this metadata with my project, currently that means keeping the XML file as a resource
However, I have been looking for a more strongly-typed alternative. I am considering moving it from an XML file to C# code - so instead of using XML apis to traverse my metadata, relying on .NET code via reflection on types
Besides the strong(er) typing, some useful characteristics I see from using an assembly are for this: (1) I can refactor the "schema" to some extent with tools like Resharper, (2) The metadata can come with code, (3) don't have to rely on any external DB component.

UPDATE: INFORMATION ABOUT THE METADATA
Because people are asking I'll try describing the metadata a bit more. I'm trying to abstract a bit - so this will seem a bit artificial.
There are three entities in the model:
A set of "groups" - each group has a unique name and several properites (usually int values that represent ID numbers of some kind)
Each "group" contains 1 or more "widgets" (never more than 50) - each item has properties like name (therea are multiple names), IDs, and various boolean properties.
Each widget contains a one or more "scenarios". Each "scenario" is documentation- a URL to a description of how to use the widget.
Typically I need to run these kinds of "queries"
Get the names of all the widgets
Get the names of all groups that contain at least one widget where BoolProp1=true
Get given the ID of a widget, which group contains that widget
How I was thinking about modelling the entities in the assembly
There are 3 classes: Group, Widget, Documentation
There are 25 Groups so I will have 25 Group classes - so "FooGroup" will derive from Group, same pattern follows for widgets and documentation
Each class will have attributes to account for names, ids, etc.
I have used and extended Metadata for a large part of my projects, many of them related to describing components, relationships among them, mappings, etc.
(Major categories of using attributes extensively include O/R Mappers, Dependency Injection framework, and Serialization description - specially XML Serialization)
Well, I'm going to ask you to describe a little bit more about the nature of the data you want to embed as resource. Using attributes are naturally good for the type of data that describes your types and type elements, but each usage of attributes is a simple and short one. Attributes (I think) should be very cohesive and somehow independent from each other.
One of the solutions that I want to point you at, is the "XML Serialization" approach. You can keep your current XMLs, and put them into your assemblies as Embedded Resource (which is what you've probably done already) and read the whole XML at once into a strongly-typed hierarchy of objects.
XML Serialization is very very simple to use, much simpler than the typical XML API or even LINQ2XML, in my opinion. It uses Attributes to map class properties to XML elements and XML attributes. Once you've loaded the XML into the objects, you have everything you want in the memory as "typed" data.
Based on what I understand from your description, I think you have a lot of data to be placed on a single class. This means a large and (in my opinion) ugly attribute code above the class. (Unless you can distribute your data among members making each of them small and independent, which is nice.)
I have many positive experiences using XML Serialization for large amount of data. You can arrange data as you want, you get type safety, you get IntelliSence (if you give your XSD to visual studio), and you also get half of the Refactoring. ReSharper (or any other refactoring tool that I know of) don't recognize XML Serialization, so when you refactor your typed classes, it doesn't change the XML itself, but changes all the usage of the data.
If you give me more details on what your data is, I might be able to add something to my answer.

I strongly recommend NOT using classes for representing instances of your data. Or even using a class to encapsulate data is against its logical definition.
I guess your best bet would be XML Serialization, provided that you already have your data in XML. You get all the benefits you want, with less code. And you can perform any query on the XML Serializable objects using LINQ2Objects.
A part of your code can look like the following:

You should call new XmlSerializer(typeof(MyMetadata)) to create a serializer, and call its Deserialize method giving it the stream of your XML, and you get a filled instance of MyMetadata class.
It's not clear from your description but it sounds like you have assembly-level metadata that you want to be able to access (as opposed to type-level). You could have a single class in each assembly that implements a common interface, then use reflection to hunt down that class and instantiate it. Then you can hard-code the metadata within.
The problems of course are the benefits that you lose from the XML -- namely that you can't modify the metadata without a new build. But if you're going this direction you probably have already taken that into account.

How would I go about using .NET's serialization library to deserialize this into C# objects?
Currently I'm using reflection and I map between the xml and my objects using the naming conventions.
Create a class for each element that has a property for each element and a List or Array of objects (use the created one) for each child element. Then call System.Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer.Deserialize on the string and cast the result as your object. Use the System.Xml.Serialization attributes to make adjustments, like to map the element to your ToDoList class, use the XmlElement("todo-list") attribute.
A shourtcut is to load your XML into Visual Studio, click the "Infer Schema" button and run "xsd.exe /c schema.xsd" to generate the classes. xsd.exe is in the tools folder. Then go through the generated code and make adjustments, such as changing shorts to ints where appropriate.
Boils down to using xsd.exe from tools in VS:

Then load it with reader and deserializer:

Well, you'd have to have classes in your assembly that match, roughly, the XML (property called Private, a collection property called ToDo, etc).
The problem is that the XML has elements that are invalid for class names. So you'd have to implement IXmlSerializable in these classes to control how they are serialized to and from XML. You might be able to get away with using some of the xml serialization specific attributes as well, but that depends on your xml's schema.
That's a step above using reflection, but it might not be exactly what you're hoping for.

There are a couple different options.
Visual Studio includes a command line program called xsd.exe. You use that program to create a schema document, and use the program again on the schema document to creates classes you can use with system.xml.serialization.xmlserializer
You might just be able to call Dataset.ReadXml() on it.
