In Silverlight, How do I make a TextBox with IsReadOnly="True" not become grayed out. The gray effect looks horrible with my app and I would like to disable it, or change its appearance/color.
There are a couple of options in Silverlight 2, the simplest would be to use a TextBlock since that's only ever readonly.
If you need a TextBox then what you need to do is give it a different style that doesn't do the grey affect.
To do this open up blend. right click on your TextBox and select Edit Control Parts (Template) -> Edit a Copy... Call the new style whatever you want.
You then want to edit this new style and delete the border called "ReadOnlyVisualElement" and delete the storyboard that alters the opacity property of that border.
Hope this helps.

I would get the preview of Blend, coding the above by hand would be a large amount of unnecessary work.
Nothing seems to work in the xaml (as usual), so the best solution I've come up with is make a textbox readonly myself without the IsReadOnly property.
public class ReadOnlyTextBox : TextBox
{
protected override void OnKeyDown(KeyEventArgs e)
{
e.Handled = true;
base.OnKeyDown(e);
}
}
If you just want an equivalent of a block of text in HTML, that can be selected (which for some reason even Silverlight 4 is missing) you can shorten Graeme's answer slightly:
<Style x:Key="ReadOnlyStyle" TargetType="TextBox">
<Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="0"/>
<Setter Property="Background" Value="#FFFFFFFF"/>
<Setter Property="Padding" Value="2"/>
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="TextBox">

<vsm:VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">

<vsm:VisualState x:Name="MouseOver"/>
<vsm:VisualState x:Name="Disabled" />
<vsm:VisualState x:Name="ReadOnly"/>
</vsm:VisualStateGroup>
<vsm:VisualStateGroup x:Name="FocusStates">
<vsm:VisualState x:Name="Focused">
<Storyboard>
<DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="FocusVisualElement" Storyboard.TargetProperty="Opacity">
<SplineDoubleKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="1"/>
</DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</vsm:VisualState>
<vsm:VisualState x:Name="Unfocused">
<Storyboard>
<DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="FocusVisualElement" Storyboard.TargetProperty="Opacity">
<SplineDoubleKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="0"/>
</DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</vsm:VisualState>
</vsm:VisualStateGroup>
</vsm:VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<Border x:Name="Border" Opacity="1" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" CornerRadius="1">
<Grid>
<Border x:Name="MouseOverBorder" BorderBrush="Transparent" BorderThickness="1">

</Border>
</Grid>
</Border>
<Border x:Name="DisabledVisualElement" IsHitTestVisible="False" Opacity="0" Background="#A5F7F7F7" BorderBrush="#A5F7F7F7" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}"/>
<Border x:Name="FocusVisualElement" Margin="1" IsHitTestVisible="False" Opacity="0" BorderBrush="#FF6DBDD1" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}"/>

</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>

You may even be able to remove the disabled states.
Here's an enhanced version of #Struan's answer.
I assume you want to allow Select all and Copy if you're wanting a read only textbox. You need to handle keypresses such as Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C.
Disclaimer: this is not a fully complete set of keys - you may need to add more, but this will allow for copy at least.
public class ReadOnlyTextBox : TextBox
{
protected override void OnKeyDown(KeyEventArgs e)
{
if (e.Key == Key.Left || e.Key == Key.Right || e.Key == Key.Up || e.Key == Key.Down)
{
base.OnKeyDown(e);
return;
}
if ((Keyboard.Modifiers & ModifierKeys.Control) == ModifierKeys.Control ||
(Keyboard.Modifiers & ModifierKeys.Apple) == ModifierKeys.Apple)
{
if (e.Key == Key.A || e.Key == Key.C)
{
// allow select all and copy!
base.OnKeyDown(e);
return;
}
}
e.Handled = true;
base.OnKeyDown(e);
}
}
And here's a simple Style I'm using that indicates to the user that the item is selectable, but is smaller than a typical textbox.
<Style TargetType="my:ReadOnlyTextBox">
<Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="0"/>
<Setter Property="Padding" Value="3,0,3,0"/>
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent"/>
</Style>
I found #Simon_Weaver's solution the easiest to implement. The only change I made was to check for Key.Tab along with left/right/up/down so that I could tab out of the field. I created the class ReadOnlyTextBox and copied the code above. Then I added the check for Key.Tab and compiled. Next I changed my Xaml tag from
<TextBox ... IsEnabled="False" />
to
<MyNameSpace:ReadOnlyTextBox ... Background="LightGray" />
(removing the IsEnabled reference and adding the background color). It looks and works exactly as I expected.
Thanks Simon.
I wanted to reduce the style to bare bone, and tested this with silverlight 4.0:
<Style x:Key="ReadOnlyStyle" TargetType="TextBox">
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="TextBox">
<TextBlock Text="{TemplateBinding Text}" TextAlignment="{TemplateBinding TextAlignment}" />
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
It is almost a cheat, like saying:Hey silverligh, this textbox is a textblock!
You should eventually add something in the TextBlock tag, to better reflect other TextBox properties.
Until the definition/behavior/appearance of a button changes, another more elegant solution is to simply change your TextBox to a Button. Change the 'Text' property to a 'Content' property to set the text displayed, remove the 'IsReadOnly' setting and you will have the effect you desire, I believe (a flat text-box-like control that supports text and all the border, background, foreground properties of a TextBox without the opacity change [graying-out] and the hassle of defining a new style).
When a user attempts to interact with this control, it's features change on the click event, but without an event handler associated with the button, there will be no impact to your interface. In fact, I think the default button behavior makes the effect appear kind of "cool".

I have to show a listbox which have UI similar as below:
On selection change of list box item I can change the background and foreground of list box item. But i need to change the image also. On selection change the image should change and when i select other item the previous item image should get reset and next selected item image should get change.
Is it possible?
How can I do this?

My problem is strange behavior of my template in my project.
In VS2012 in xaml designer TabControl looks normal. But it's completely opposite in compiled application.
The selection state don't work correctly. In fact it presents only normal vsm state.
I can switch between TabItems content but Selection and Hover (mouseOver) state on tab strip are not changing background and border colors. As I said only normal state of VisualStateManager is working in executed app.
Since we cant debug wpf vsm I cant figured out what causes that problem.
I think it is a problem with VisualSateManager.
For test i used single windows with simple tab control posted below
<TabControl>
<TabItem Header="A">content A</TabItem>
<TabItem Header="B">content B</TabItem>
<TabItem Header="C">content C</TabItem>
</TabControl>
If you know what causes a problem with my app, or you have met with similar situation with controls in wpf pleas help me.
I think that your problem may lie in the VisualStateManager class. Had you looked through this page, then you would have seen the VisualStateManager.GoToState Method. This is the method that you should call to change the current visual state... you didn't show this in any of your code, so I can only assume that you have not called this. From the linked page on MSDN, this method:
Transitions the control between two states. Use this method to transition states on control that has a ControlTemplate.
Additionally, you can find an in-depth description of the VisualStateManager class in the answer to the VisualStateManager — showing mouseover state when control is focused
I'm trying to prevent textbox from fading out when it is disabled.
So i'm trying to do it in IsEnabledChanged event handler like this:

var border = FindVisualChildByName<Border>(AssociatedObject, "DisabledVisual");
if (!(bool) e.NewValue)
{
AssociatedObject.Foreground = new SolidColorBrush(Color.FromArgb(255, 0, 0, 0));
if (border != null)
{
border.Visibility = Visibility.Collapsed;
border.Opacity = 0;
}
}
else
{
AssociatedObject.Foreground = defaultBrush;
}
}
So.. This approach doesn't work. Actually ActualWidth and ActualHeight is presented, but Visibility set to Collapsed.
Can't understand why? And any other approaches to prevent textbox from fading out when IsEnabled = false?
Thanks!
The effect is because of visual states of the textbox (MSDN LINK)
The VisualState Name Disabled causes the fading effect.
I have pasted the edited style by commenting the storyboard for fading effect. All you have to do is apply this style(after editing if needed) to ur text box for which u Don't want thfading effect.

Upon a button click event, I am showing a border around an item in a LongListSelector. I have having an issue, however, when leaving the page and then returning. When leaving, I would like to programmatically unselect the item (which is working) but the border around the item still shows when returning to the page. How might I remove the border as well? This is very confusing when a user expects no item to be selected when the original page is loaded, whether it be from application start or from being navigated to from another page.

You've shown a lot of code but most of it doesn't seem to be relevant to your actual question. You also haven't made it clear how you're highlighting the selected item.
Based on the limited information you've provided I'd guess that you're using code to trigger changing of the state/style of the item.
You're then changing the SelectedItem property on the list but you haven't bound this to anything and so it makes no change.
The simplest solution would be to bind to the selected item and have a different state when selected.
Alternatively, if you really want to use a button press to trigger the highlighting, you'll need remove this highlighting in a similar way. That is, on page exit you clear the highlighting from whatever item is highlighted. This could be done by walking the visual tree to identify the highlighted item, or having a [bound] property on the underlying viewmodel which you can query/update.
I am trying to make a textbox look like a textblock (no white background or anything) so that I can display resulting text and numbers in it. When the user taps on the text I want the whole result to be highlighted for easy copy/pasting. This is for a Windows Phone 8 Application. Thanks!
I've tried using this:
