Testing Network/Internet connection issues - c#

What methods are there to test how well a C# desktop application handles various network/internet failures, and which, if any, failures it doesn't handle?

Not an official test but still useful is the good old "yank the cat5e from the wall" test. You'd be surprised how many applications simply crash.

I recommend at least the following:
1) As Peter recommended, yank the cable. This should be done on both server and client machines.
2) A more subtle test is to yank the cable on an intermediate router, so both computers still "see" the cable is connected. This often results in a half-open connection.
3) Another test is to crash one side but leave the OS connected (e.g., Task Manager's End Process). This should also be done on both server and client machines.
These all test different errors and are pretty simple to do.
In addition, you could write an "error simulator" that acts like a badly-behaved client or server implementation. Have it try to send huge messages, or violate the protocol, or send data when it's not supposed to... There are many possibilities, depending on the protocol.

Here's the situation.
.Net c# App has not changed, IT group did "a lot of stuff" (new san, new routers & switches software, etc) app works fine, except all Jquery Ajax calls never return.
So obviously they changed something... In Dev tools in Chrome, I see the request go out, but it never receives a reply.
the server gets crippled by the pile up of hung threads, performance suffers horribly.
after 10k connections they have to bounce the server.
So of course now they want us to help them figure out what they did wrong.
What should I be looking for? My best guess is the wireshark the process and see where the last communications takes place.
after that I'm at a loss; what can cause this behavior?
If the server configuration has not changed, then I would look at firewall settings. Wireshark is an excellent tool - can the server send data out over port 80? Can the server send ANYTHING out over the wire? The server is receiving something obviously otherwise you wouldn't have all these connections. I know for Sonicwall firewalls, outbound access is wide open by default but I believe that Cisco ASAs require explicit permission (not positive on this). Are you using VLANs? If so, is the server blocked from the outside world while being tucked in its own lonely VLAN? Also, run netstat -a on the server to check the connections to help with troubleshooting.

What to use? WCF or Sockets? in a C# program

I am in the need of creating a C# program that will run on couple of our local Windows client machines. These 'client' programs will have to take commands from a 'admin' program run on another machine.
The commands could be to reboot the client computers, return some local information about IP address etc back to the 'admin' program.
But how to accomplish this? I know a little about WCF but is that the right way to go?
If I go with WCF I will then have to make the client programs run a service method, like every second, to check for new commands. With sockets I establish a 'direct' connection and the client just waits for a command to receive - isn't that correct understood?
Which way would be the right way for me to go?
We are talking about ~10 clients and I want a maximum delay (send command - receive info back) of 1 second.
Any hints would also be appreciated.

Duplex WCF server. Basically, the clients all connect into the server (so only 1 server), and the server uses its duplex channel to call back to the clients whenever it needs to. No polling, scales well, etc. The most headache you'll need to deal with is to set a long timeout in case that you don't send anything for a while so that the channels time out.
WCF will end up being much simpler in the end.

You can make WCF clients act as servers and with command & control program connect to them that is no problem. Go for WCF if you don't want to mess with ugly stuff that sockets can bring. WCF can be configured nicely in app.config, and you can make it really self hosted command line application even so no need for IIS server. Configuration will be then resuable and easier to maintain.
You could use .NET Remoting which can provide a "push" backchannel from the server to the client (using "callbacks"). It does not need a 2nd TCP connection in the other direction so you don't need to mess with client's firewalls and routers.
Remoting is considered kind of obsolete but it has its places.
In any case I would not use a WCF polling technique. That leads to bad latency and a DDOS situation for the server.
If you can make the clients open a port then hosting a WCF service there is probably the best idea.
I would recommend a socket implementation as in the long run it probably gives you greater flexibility. You could create this from scratch yourself using the socket namespace. As an alternative you could use an off the shelf network library solution. Checkout lidgren and NetworkComms.Net.

With the small number of machines and modest performance requirements you mentioned, I think WCF would end up being easier than sockets.
You might look into Duplex WCF. I've never used it, and WCF has given me headaches in the past any time I've needed anything unusual, but it's for the sort of problem you're talking about.
If all the machines are on one network, here's one creative alternative loosely inspired by message queues: you could use a database table as a place where messages appear and get read by clients at their leisure. The clients could just query it and say: get me all messages where MessageID > LastReceivedMessageID.
The downsides of that last approach is that (a) you're still doing polling although your database server should be able to handle it and (b) if you might ever need this outside of your network, you would need a VPN or a new solution.

I use MSMQ for a number of similar applications. Works perfectly.

Fast way to check if a server is accessible over the network in C#

I've got a project where I'm hitting a bunch of custom Windows Performance Counters on multiple servers and aggregating them into a database. If a server is down, I want to skip it, and just continue on with my day.
Currently I'm checking to see if a server is live by doing a DirectoryInfo on a share that I've got to look at later in the process anyways, then checking the .Exists property.This is my current code snippet for testing:

This works, but its pretty slow. It takes about 68 seconds on average for the di.Exists bit to finish its work, and I ideally need to know within a second whether or not a server is accessible. Pinging also isn't an option since a server can be pingable but not "live" in our environment.
I'm still kind of fresh to the .NET world, so I'm open to any advice people can offer.

Ping First, Ask Questions Later
Why not ping first, and then do the di.Exists if you get a response?
That would allow you to fail early in the case that is not reachable, and not waste the time for machines that are down hard.
I have, in fact, used this method successfully before.

Paralellize
Another option you have is to paralellize the checking, and action on the servers as they are known to be available.
You could use the Paralell.ForEach() method, and use a thread-safe queue along with a simple consumer thread to do the required action. Combined with the checking method above, this could alleviate almost all of your bottleneck on the up/down checking.
Knock on the Door
Yet another method would be to ckeck if the required remote service is running (either by hitting its port directly or by querying it with WMI).
Since WMI is almost always running when a machine is up, your connection should be very quick to either succeed or fail.
The only "quick" way I think to see if it's up without relying on ping would be to create a socket, and see if you can actually connect to the port of the service you're trying to reach.
This would be the equivalent of telnet servername 135 to see if it's up.
Specifically...
Create a .NET TCP socket client (System.Net.Sockets.TcpClient)
Call BeginConnect() as an asynchronous operation, to connect to the server in question on one of the RPC ports that your directory exists code would use anyway (TCP 135, 139, or 445).
If you don't hear back from it within X milliseconds, call Close() to cancel the connection.
Disclaimer: I have no idea what effect this would have on any threat/firewall protection that may see this type of Connect / Disconnect with no data sent activity as a threat.
Opening Socket to a specific port usually does the trick. If you really want it to be fast, be sure to set the NoDelay property on the new socket (Nagle algorithm) so there is no buffering.
Fast will largely depend on latency but this is probably the fastest way I know to connect to an endpoint. It's pretty simple to parallelize using the async methods. How fast you can check will largely depend on your network topology but in tests for 1000 servers (latency between 0-75ms) I've been able to get connectivity state in ~30 seconds. Not scientific data at all but should give you the idea.
Also, don't ever do this through UNC file shares because if the server no longer exists you will have a lot of dangling connections that take forever to timeout. So if you have a lot of servers with invalid DNS records and you try to poll them you will bring Windows down completely over time. Things like File.Exists and any file access will cause this.
The "Full-Blown" option would be to install a monitoring tool like SCOM (System Center Operations Manager), this has an SDK you can use to query SCOM for (performance) and maintenance information avout machines being monitored. Might be a bridge to far though....
Telnet is another option. Try telnetting to the target machine to see if it responds.
Create a small Windows Service that you install on your target machine, have the sys admin stop it when they perform maintenance on the target machine (just use batch file to net stop / net start the service)

Discover computers on local network with specific open port using .NET

I need to "discover" local computers running my windows WCF service, so I can talk to them. Right now you have to enter manually the ipaddress:port combination, but I would like to have a (web?) application that monitors the machines running the service and reports on it.
When I try to connect to an invalid ip/port it takes "forever" to timeout, so it's not feasible to check all the ip on my local network. Is there a quick way to discover which machines have the port open (all of them have the hole in the firewall for that specific port)

I have done this several time. Just set the timeout value very low.
ALso if its a real machine but without the port open it should fail fast anyway. If you are doing a subnet sweep then, yes, you need to have a (say) 1 second timeout.

could you have the client configured to contact the web app and report with it's location that it is running your wcf service?
that would require the web app to be running on a known machine that doesnt change.
Why not make them use multicast to broadcast a "HELLO" packet every so often. This is assuming of course that multicast is available in your scenario and your not talking across routing domains. Simply use the "HELLO" packet contents such as ipv4 unicast address to ensure you know what you should be talking to. Of course you don't need to use multicast, you can just send a broadcast to 255.255.255.255 which is not a complex task and then listen for these messages. The benefit of this is that you could also enable negotiation of the port. For instance, if your application generally binds to a port but this port is unavailable, it can automatically choose a port and let you know what port it is bound to. Avoids manual configuration maintenance and headaches involved. Hell, it can even use broadcast to send a message and check if it received it. If it doesn't, fire off an alert letting the systems administrator know.
I use something along these lines for managing test harnesses for soft switches (voice) and it works very well.
Of course, I could be very much off on this. Just thinking out off the box here.

Whats the best way to send an event to all workstations

I hope someone can guide me as I'm stuck... I need to write an emergency broadcast system that notifies workstations of an emergency and pops up a little message at the bottom of the user's screen. This seems simple enough but there are about 4000 workstations over multiple subnets. The system needs to be almost realtime, lightweight and easy to deploy as a windows service.
The problem started when I discovered that the routers do not forward UDP broadcast packets x.x.x.255. Later I made a simple test hook in VB6 to catch net send messages but even those didn't pass the routers. I also wrote a simple packet sniffer to filter packets only to find that the network packets never reached the intended destination.
Then I took a look and explored using MSMQ over HTTP, but this required IIS to be installed on the target workstation. Since there are so many workstations it would be a major security concern.
Right now I've finished a web service with asynchronous callback that sends an event to subscribers. It works perfectly on a small scale but once there are more than 15 subscribers performance degrades considerably. Polling a server isn't really an option because of the load it will generate on the server (plus I've tried it too)
I need your help to guide me as to what technology to use. has anyone used the comet way with so many clients or should I look at WCF?
I'm using Visual C# 2005. Please help me out of this predicament.

Consider using WCF callbacks mechanism and events. There is good introduction by Juval Lowy.
Another pattern is to implement blocking web-service calls. This is how GMail chat works, for example. However, you will have to deal with sessions and timeouts here. It works when clients are behind NATs and Firewalls and not reachable directly. But it may be too complicated for simple alert within intranet.
This is exactly what Multicast was designed for.
A normal network broadcast (by definition) stays on the local subnet, and will not be forwarded through routers.
Multicast transmissions on the other hand can have various scopes, ranging from subnet local, through site local, even to global. All you need is for the various routers connecting your subnets together to be multicast aware.
This problem i think is best solved with socket.
Open a connection to the server, and keep it open.
Could you have a slave server in each subnet that was responsible for distributing the messages to all the clients in the subnet?
Then you could have just the slaves attached to the central server where the messages are initiated.
I think some of you are vastly overthinking this. There is already a service built into every version of Windows that provides this exact functionality! It is called the Messenger service. All you have to do is ensure that this service is enabled and running on all clients.
(Although you didn't specify in the question, I'm assuming from your choices of technology that the client population of this network is all Windows).
You can send messages using this facility from the command line using something like this:
NET SEND computername "This is a test message"
The NET SEND command also has options to send by Windows domain, or to specific users by name regardless of where they are logged in, or to every system that is connected to a particular Windows server. Those options should let you easily avoid the subnet issue, particularly if you use domain-based security on your network. (You may need the "Alerter" service enabled on certain servers if you are sending messages through the server and not directly to the clients).
The programmatic version of this is an API called NetMessageBufferSend() which is pretty straightforward. A quick scan of P/Invoke.net finds a page for this API that supplies not only the definitions you need to call out to the API, but also a C# sample program!
You shouldn't need to write any client-side code at all. Probably the most involved thing will be figuring out the best set of calls to this API that will get complete coverage of the network in your configuration.
ETA: I just noticed that the Messenger service and this API are completely gone in Windows Vista. Very odd of Microsoft to completely remove functionality like this. It appears that this vendor has a compatible replacement for Vista.
