There has got to be a one-liner to do this, and I just can't find it.
Given this query:
from x in new XPQuery<XPContent>(s)
select new { x.Category, x.ContentType, x.Name, x.ContentID, x.Date }
I need to select the record with the greatest date for each distinct ContentID. Can this be done cleverly with LINQ? Right now I'm doing this:
var q = (from x in new XPQuery<XPContent>(s)
select new { x.Category, x.ContentType, x.Name, x.ContentID, x.Date }).ToList();
var r = q.ToLookup(item => item.ContentID);
foreach (var rItem in r) {
var s = rItem.OrderByDescending(a => a.Date).First();
/* do stuff with s */
}
... but the ToLookup feels kind of clunky. Or do I have the best (simplest) solution?
Also, I know I shouldn't be using ToList, but please just ignore that for the time being.

I think you want:
var q = from x in new XPQuery<XPContent>(s)
group x by x.ContentID into g
let latest = g.OrderByDescending(a => a.Date).First()
select new
{
latest.Category, latest.ContentType,
latest.Name, latest.ContentID, latest.Date
};
(Do note that there are more performant ways of finding the 'maximum' element from a group than by sorting it first, for example with a MaxBy operator.)
The query is quite simple; it just groups items by their ContentId, and then from each group, selects an instance of an anonymous type that is produced from the group's latest item.

You don't really need to do manual joins in EF if your relationships are properly defined in the model.
This query will suffice
var result = db.ItemsDefinition.Select(id => new { id.ItemsDefinitionID,

Either leave the SQL generation to EF or stop using EF. There's no point in using an ORM if you keep worrying about the queries it will generate.

My database table has the columns User, TimeStampDate, and Target (which is a GUID).
I want to retrieve all items for each date for each user and display count of entries.
The above SQL query works. How can I convert it into LINQ to SQL? Am using EF 6.1 and my entity class in C# has all the above columns.

You need to specify the group by columns in an anonymous type like this:-

Many people find query syntax simpler and easier to read (this might not be the case, I don't know), here's the query syntax version anyway.

To use GroupBy you need to create an anonymous object like this:

It is unnecessary to group by target in your original SQL.

If I understand correctly, you want to get a mapping between the item code to the cumulative quantity of the items under this code.
Given an IEnumerable named orders you can do the following:

This gives you an IEnumerable of anonymous objects the you can easily turn into a dictionaryif you want:

Well you just just do the ordering then the grouping like so:
Lst_CS.OrderBy(l => l.Date)
.GroupBy(l => l.No)
.ToList();
Each list of items in each group will be ordered by date. The groupings will be in the order that they are found when the entire list is ordered by date.
Also your ForEach can be done in one Linq statement, then combined with the ordering and grouping:

I have no experience with EF, so I'm unsure if only SQL-esque linq works here. A plain C#-ish:

You have put filter on every item. It should be applied on complete query result, not on every item.
Following is updated query.

This will return only record with max timestamp for each omraade_id.
UPDATE query above works fine to me (at least for MS SQL Linq provider). Also you don't need to do FirstOrDefault - if omraade_id is grouped, then it definitely has at least one row.
