How to move txt file to other folder? - c#

I try to write a console app C# to move my etxt files to another folder.
The functions just copies certain .txt files from folder A to folder AA
string source = "C:\\A\\ResultClassA.txt";
File.Move(Source, "C:\\AA");
But its always giving this error message:
Access to the path is denied.
Troubleshooting tips:
Make sure you have sufficient privileges to access this resource.
If you are attempting to access a file, make sure it is not ReadOnly.
Get general help for this exception.
Do i really need to set my folder A and folder B to "NOT ReadOnly" attribute before "File.move" code are execuse? and set to read only back after success moved?

You need to specify the full path and make sure the path C:\AA exists

Hero, you are moving from a file name to a folder name, try to specify a file name with extension inside the C:\AA folder.
does AA exist already on C ?

Access files from Network shared folder

I am accessing one folder with csv file under it by c# code. I have network path like "\NL0000NAS0007.dir.xyz.com\webtest\SERVERS\NLWSL086\personnel\people\PROD". While calling with below code it is appending "c:" earlier to this url so I am not able to get the files.
Below is my code snippet.

The code snippet cant be the full source code. It is unclear how the variables are initialised. But given your network path of "\NL0000NAS0007.dir.xyz.com\webtest\SERVERS\NLWSL086\personnel\people\PROD" it is very clear, that it doesnt function. The path starts with a single \ character, so the System.IO API assumes you mean a relative path to whatever is the current directory or drive . And this could be "C:"...

Whats the code to create a directory if it doesnt exist?

I am having a problem with coding my save-directory. I want it to create a folder called "Ausgabe" (Output) on the current users Desktop, but I do not know how to check if it already exists and if it doesn't then create it.
This is my current code for that part so far:

You can check if a directory exists using
Directory.Exists(pathToDirectory)
and create a directory using
Directory.CreateDirectory(pathToDirectory)

should give you the path to a folder named 'Ausgabe' in the users Desktop-folder.
Just use Directory.CreateDirectory. If the directory exists the method will not create it (in other words it contains a call to Directory.Exists internally)

To use this method you need to add a using System.IO to the top of your Form1.cs file.
I wish also to say that the Desktop is not the most appropriate place to create a directory for your application. There is a proper place provided by the System and it is under the ProgramData enum (CommonApplicationData or ApplicationData)

Creates all directories and subdirectories in the specified path
unless they already exist.
So it is fine to use like this:

I have had a recent issue so here is my solution,
I had to find the deployed directory
var deployedDir = Assembly.GetEntryAssembly().CodeBase;
deployedDir = Path.GetDirectoryName(deployedDir);
deployedDir = deployedDir.Replace("file:\\", "");
var pathToDirectory= Path.Combine(deployedDir, "YourFileName");
Then do what the above answers show and create the directory if it doesnt exist,
Directory.CreateDirectory(pathToDirectory)

Copying an image file to an empty folder in using WPF C#

After going through all the related stuff to copying files i am unable to find an answer to my
problem of an exception occurring while i was trying to copy a file to an empty folder in WPF application. Here is the code snippet.

The GetFileName ()
only returns the actual name of the file (drops the path) what you want is a full path to the file. So you getting an exception because the 'name' does not exist on your drive (path is unknown)
You're variable, name, is most likely just the file name (i.e. something.jpg). When you use the File.Copy(...) method, if you do not supply an absolute path the method assumes a path relative to the executable.
Basically, if you are running your app in, for example, C:\Projects\SomeProject\bin\Debug\SomeProject.exe, then it is assuming your file is C:\Projects\SomeProject\bin\Debug\something.jpg.

System.IO.File.Move error - Could not find a part of the path

I have a sync software, which loads CSV files from "Incoming" folder, processes them and then moves them to the "Archive" folder.
Today, I saw the following error with this sync software:

I wrote a cut down version of the above to test this in a controlled environment and I am not getting the error with this code:

You need to include the checks to make sure that the paths exist at runtime and check the output, something very simple like:
if(!Directory.Exists(Path.GetDirectoryName(filePath)))

Console.WriteLine("newFilePath does not exist: " + newFilePath);

File.Move(filePath, newFilePath);
The reason I am suggesting this method is due to a possibility that the paths momentarily become available or not under the multi-tasking OSs depending on a multitude of factors: network connectivity, permissions (pushed down by GPO at any time), firewall rules, AV exclusions getting blown away etc. Even running low on CPU or RAM may create issues. In short, you never know what exactly occurred when your code was running if you are only checking the paths availability after the fact.
Or if your issue is intermittent, you can try and catch the error and write information to some sort of a log similarly to below:

"Could not find a part of the path" exception could also thrown from File.Move if argument used was longer than MAX_PATH (260) in .NET Framework.
So I prepend the path I used with long path syntax before passing to File.Move and it worked.

I have this

happened to me when I
File.Move(mapfile_path , Path.Combine(newPath, mapFile));
. After some testing, I find out our server administrator has blocked any user application from writing to that directory in that [newPath]!
So, right click on that directory to observe the rights matrix on Security tab to see anything that would block you.
Another cause of DirectoryNotFoundException "could not find a part of the path" thrown by File.Move can be spaces at the end of the directory name. Consider the following code:
string destinationPath = "C:\\Folder1 "; //note the space on the end
string destinationFileNameAndPath = Path.Combine(destinationPath, "file.txt");

Directory.CreateDirectory(destinationPath);
File.Move(sourceFileNameAndPath, destinationFileNameAndPath);
You may expect this code to succeed, since it creates the destination directory if it doesn't already exist, but Directory.CreateDirectory seems to trim the extra space on the end of the directory name, whereas File.Move does not and gives the above exception.
In this circumstance, you can workaround this by trimming the extra space yourself, e.g. (depending on how you load your path variable, the below is obviously overkill for a hard-coded string)

Moving a folder (Directory) from one location to another - misbehavior

I want to move a directory from one location to another using C# .NET. I used Directory.Move or even DirectoryInfo (with MoveTo) this simple way:

But action that's being done (for both cases) is renaming the folder name from 'source' to 'newLocation'
What I expected? that folder "Elvis my man" will be now in "Elvis" folder.
What has happened? "Elvis my man" was changed to "Elvis" (Renamed). If the directory "Elvis" is already exists, it can't change it to "Elvis" (cause he can't make a duplicate names), therefore I get an exception saying that.
What am I doing wrong??

I would advise putting validation around the Move command to ensure that the source location does exists and the destination location doesn't exists.
I've always found it easier to avoid the exceptions than handle them once they do occur.
You'll probably want to include exception handling as well, just in case the access permissions are a problem or a file is open and can't be moved...
Here's some sample code for you:

Even though this works in the command line to move a file, when programming you need to provide the full new name.
So you'd need to change newLocation to "C:\Songs\Elvis\Elvis my Man" to make this work.

This method throws an IOException if, for example, you try to move c:\mydir to c:\public, and c:\public already exists. You must specify "c:\public\mydir" as the destDirName parameter, or specify a new directory name such as "c:\newdir".
