Make sure you always select the right regex engine at regex101.com. See an issue that occurred due to using a JS-only compatible regex with [^] construct in Python.
JS regex - at the time of answering this question - did not support lookbehinds. Now, it becomes more and more adopted after its introduction in ECMAScript 2018. You do not really need it here since you can use capturing groups:

The (?:\s|^)#(\S+) matches a whitespace or the start of string with (?:\s|^), then matches #, and then matches and captures into Group 1 one or more non-whitespace chars with (\S+).

First of all, have you checked the Code Generator link in the Tools pane on the left?
All languages - "Literal string" vs. "String literal" alert - Make sure you test against the same text used in code, literal string, at the regex tester. A common scenario is copy/pasting a string literal value directly into the test string field, with all string escape sequences like \n (line feed char), \r (carriage return), \t (tab char). See Regex_search c++, for example. Mind that they must be replaced with their literal counterparts. So, if you have in Python text = "Text\n\n abc", you must use Text, two line breaks, abc in the regex tester text field. Text.*?abc will never match it although you might think it "works". Yes, . does not always match line break chars, see How do I match any character across multiple lines in a regular expression?
All languages - Backslash alert - Make sure you correctly use a backslash in your string literal, in most languages, in regular string literals, use double backslash, i.e. \d used at regex101.com must written as \\d. In raw string literals, use a single backslash, same as at regex101. Escaping word boundary is very important, since, in many languages (C#, Python, Java, JavaScript, Ruby, etc.), "\b" is used to define a BACKSPACE char, i.e. it is a valid string escape sequence. PHP does not support \b string escape sequence, so "/\b/" = '/\b/' there.
All languages - Default flags - Global and Multiline - Note that by default m and g flags are enabled at regex101.com. So, if you use ^ and $, they will match at the start and end of lines correspondingly. If you need the same behavior in your code check how multiline mode is implemented and either use a specific flag, or - if supported - use an inline (?m) embedded (inline) modifier. The g flag enables multiple occurrence matching, it is often implemented using specific functions/methods. Check your language reference to find the appropriate one.
line-breaks - Line endings at regex101.com are LF only, you can't test strings with CRLF endings, see regex101.com VS myserver - different results. Solutions can be different for each regex library: either use \R (PCRE, Java, Ruby) or some kind of \v (Boost, PCRE), \r?\n, (?:\r\n?|\n)/(?>\r\n?|\n) (good for .NET) or [\r\n]+ in other libraries (see answers for C#, PHP). Another issue related to the fact that you test your regex against a multiline string (not a list of standalone strings/lines) is that your patterns may consume the end of line, \n, char with negated character classes, see an issue like that. \D matched the end of line char, and in order to avoid it, [^\d\n] could be used, or other alternatives.
php - You are dealing with Unicode strings, or want shorthand character classes to match Unicode characters, too (e.g. \w+ to match Стрибижев or Stribiżew, or \s+ to match hard spaces), then you need to use u modifier, see preg_match() returns 0 although regex testers work - To match all occurrences, use preg_match_all, not preg_match with /...pattern.../g, see PHP preg_match to find multiple occurrences and "Unknown modifier 'g' in..." when using preg_match in PHP?- Your regex with inline backreference like \1 refuses to work? python - Note that re.search, re.match, re.fullmatch, re.findall and re.finditer accept the regex as the first argument, and the input string as the second argument. Not re.findall("test 200 300", r"\d+"), but re.findall(r"\d+", "test 200 300"). To review regular expresions I read this tutorial. Anyways that tutorial mentions that \b matches a word boundary (between \w and \W characters). That tutorial also gives a link where you can install expresso (program that helps when creating regular expressions).
So I have created my regular expressions in expresso and I do inded get a match. Now when I copy the same regex to visual studio I do not get a match. Take a look:

The C# language and .NET Regular Expressions both have their own distinct set of backslash-escape sequences, but the C# compiler is intercepting the "\b" in your string and converting it into an ASCII backspace character so the RegEx class never sees it. You need to make your string verbatim (prefix with an at-symbol) or double-escape the 'b' so the backslash is passed to RegEx like so:
#"\bCOMPILATION UNIT";
Or
"\\bCOMPILATION UNIT"
I'll say the .NET RegEx documentation does not make this clear. It took me a while to figure this out at first too.
Fun-fact: The \r and \n characters (carriage-return and line-break respectively) and some others are recognized by both RegEx and the C# language, so the end-result is the same, even if the compiled string is different.
You should use #"\bCOMPILATION UNIT". This is a verbatim literal. When you do "\b" instead, it parses \b into a special character. You can also do "\\b", whose double backslash is parsed into a real backslash, but it's generally easier to just use verbatims when dealing with regex.
I am new to regular expressions. Recently I was presented with a task to convert a wildcard pattern to regular expression. This will be used to check if a file path matches the regex.
For example if my pattern is *.jpg;*.png;*.bmp
I was able to generate the regex by spliting on semicolons, escaping the string and replaceing the escaped * with .*

So my resulting regex will be for jpg ((?i).*\.jpg)$)
Thien I combine all my extensions using the OR operator.
Thus my final expression for this example will be:
((?i).*\.jpg)$)|((?i).*\.png)$)|((?i).*\.bmp)$)
I have tested it and it worked yet I am not sure if I should add or remove any expression to cover other cases or is there a better format the whole thing
Also bear in mind that I can encounter a wildcard like *myfile.jpg where it should match all files whose names end with myfile.jpg
I can encounter patterns like *myfile.jpg;*.png;*.bmp
There's a lot of grouping going on there which isn't really needed... well unless there's something you haven't mentioned this regex would do the same for less:
/.*\.(jpg|png|bmp)$/i
That's in regex notation, in C# that would be:
String regex=new RegEx(#".*\.(jpg|png|bmp)$",RegexOptions.IgnoreCase);
If you have to programatically translate between the two, you've started on the right track - split by semicolon, group your extensions into the set (without the preceding dot). If your wildcard patterns can be more complicated (extensions with wildcards, multi-wildcard starting matches) it might need a bit more work ;)

If the wild cards can be more complicated, then you're almost there. There's an optimization in my above code that pulls the dot out (for extension) which has to be put back in so you'd end up with:
/.*(myfile\.jpg|\.png|\.bmp)$/i
Basically '*' -> '.*', '.' -> '\.'(gets escaped), rest goes into the set. Basically it says match anything ending (the dollar sign anchors to the end) in myfile.jpg, .png or .bmp.
I have a xml file containing certain expressions like this :-

2. AAaaa-1111-aaa
3. AA11111-11111
4. AA111-111-111111
(AA static text) (aaaa-Any alphabet only) then hyphen (1111 - any digit only)
I was thinking i should write regular expression for these I believe regex should be the right approach.
But this XML file is dynamic. User can remove or add different expressions in the list. So How can i use regular expression here? Is there any dynamic regular expression kind of thing. Show me the light here please.
UPDATE:- I am using these expressions to validate user input. So whatever user is entering in a box, it should be matched with any of these expressions from the list.

If it is correct, yes, you could use Regular Expressions. What you need to do is translate your patterns to regex patterns. Assuming you have a new pattern:
AAA-aaa-111
to obtain the regex that will recognize that pattern, all you have to do is translate that pattern into regex patterns. For example:

You should take in count other characters that have special meanings in Regular Expressions, and translate/encode them properly. Maybe classify them. For example, these characters:
., $, ^
can be easily translated to regex patterns just encoding them with a \ before, so they will become:
\., \$, \^, ...
If you can specify what is the format of the validation patterns you are storing in the XML files, I could help you a little more, but I'm just writing this answer kind of blind ;)
Regular expressions that match certain sets of characters in a certain order are fairly simple. For example, this will match #2 (AAaaa-1111-aaa):
[A-Z]{2}[a-z]{3}-[0-9]{4}-[a-z]{3}
Breaking it down:
[A-Z]: Any character from A to Z. So any alphabetic, uppercase character.
{2}: Two of the previous item.
The rest of it works in the same way. The hyphens between things are there to match the hyphens in your expected input.
I am trying to get all strings enclosed in <*> by using following Regex:

You'll get most of what what you want by using the regex /<([^>]*)>/. (No need to escape the angle brackets' as angle brackets aren't special characters in most regex engines, including the .NET engine.) The regex I provided will also capture trailing whitespace and any attributes on the tag--parsing those things reliably is way, way beyond the scope of a reasonable regex.
However, be aware that if you're trying to parse XML/HTML with a regex, that way lies madness
Regexes are the wrong tool for parsing XML. Try using the System.Xml.Linq (XElement) API.
Your regex is using \S+ as the wildcard. In english, this is "a series of one or more characters, none of which is non-whitespace". In other words, when the regex <(?<name>\S+)> is applied to this string: '`, the regex will match the entire string. angle brackets are non-whitespace.
I think what you want is "a series of one or more characters, none of which is an angle bracket".
The regex for that is <(?<name>[^>]+)> .
