I'm using Visual Studio 2010
In one solution I have A.XAML file and it keeps opening every time I start solution. It also opens at some random time - I have no exact explanation.
It's very annoying. Why would VS open specific file by itself?
Does it open even when you create a new project? How about locating the file and renaming it does it help the problem? Also, have you tried to backup and remove the content of C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\?
Update 1 based on comments:
So when you renamed all your A.XAML to B.XAML, do you get the A.XAML appearing or do you get a B.XAML file? Do you have many instances of the A.XAML file on your computer? If there are many, rename them differently so that you can subsequently identify the guilty one. Have you tried to 'Repair' VisualStudio through 'Add Remove Program' in Control Panel? Can you locate the A.XAML string in Regedit.exe? I think it could be useful if you would create a dummy project and ask a colleague or, friend to open it on their computer? (It would be helpful to get have a sample of that dummy project in order to troubleshoot whether it is the Project or, the IDE or, the OS which is the guilty party)
Update 2 based on further comments:
Recreating the .SUO file of the project fixed the problem. For example, renaming the .SUO file to .BAK and re-opening the project in Visual Studio.
What worked for me was running Visual Studio installer and choosing the repair option.
I had a whole solution that always opened a few seconds after I open any other solution. I didn't want to delete the solution so I thought I should try repairing Visual Studio (using VS2019). Haven't had any issue since.
Seems like an 'intense' option but it was what worked.

My Visual Studio is not showing a lot of the available classes in the IntelliSense auto-complete. For example, a project I'm working on has a reference to the Microsoft.Xna.Framework namespace, yet even after adding the using statement using Microsoft.Xna.Framework in a file, IntelliSense is unable to recognize classes like Texture2D and Rectangle. I can still type them in, however, without getting a compiler error. Any idea what's happening?
The IntelliSense detects standard libraries like System.Diagnostics but not any external ones.
It is not a NameSpace conflict issue because classes within the current namespace are also missing from the IntelliSense.
I have tried:
Restarting Visual Studio (With and without closing tabs)
Deleting the contents of %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0\ComponentCacheModel folder
Resetting import and export settings
What worked for me is unloading and reloading the project
If unloading/reloading the project doesn't work, try deleting the .suo file found in the SolutionName/.vs/ folder. The .vs folder is an auto-created, hidden folder so you will have to show hidden folders in order to see it.
I am using ReSharper. What worked for me:
Unload project.
ReSharper > Options > Environment > General > Clear caches
Close solution.
Exit Visual Studio.
Restart Visual Studio.
Reload project.
Do you have ReSharper or any other plugins installed? There sounds like a similar issue/solution here. It may be third-party plugins at play depending on what add-ons you have.
Try saving and reloading the files.
I don't know why it happens, but it happens to my work laptop occasionally, typically reopening the source file resolves it.
OK so probably not the best solution but it works. I reinstalled Visual Studio and the problem was fixed. Also, it hasn't shown up since (this happened about 3 months ago).
another dumb solution))) Determine which classes/namespaces are not showing up. Then go to that project where they are. In that project pick any .cs file copy its contents, then delete that file and create again))
Click on the class not showing and Change Build Action -> to Compile
it happens sometimes when you add class as content or other resources
I don't know exactly how, but on a certain moment we ruined our complete visual studio solution. It wouldn't build anymore, nor clean, nor find any reference.
Afters hours of searching and trying to fix everything we got to the point that everything was building and running again.
However.. every time we open our solution we will get the message “Projects have recently been added to this solution. Do you want to get them from source control?”.
This is probably cause by trying to fix one thing and breaking something else.
How do we get rid of this message?
Thanks to some research and trying some various options this is what solved it in our case.
1. Unbinding the solution file from TFS
Unbind the solution file (.sln) from TFS. We did this (in visual studio of course) by going to the menu File => Source Control => Change Source Control.
2. Cleaning the solution file by deleting globalsection
We had to clean the solution file (.sln) by opening it in a text editor (we used notepad++). We removed all occurences of GlobalSection(TeamFoundationVersionControl) = preSolution. Including the mentioned starting tag and the ending tag EndGlobalSection.
3. Bind the solution file to TFS again
Finally we binded the solution file (.sln) to TFS again. We did this (in visual studio of course) by going to the menu File => Source Control => Change Source Control
Thanks to http://www.nivisec.com/2008/09/vsts-projects-have-recently-been-added.html who pointed us in the right direction after some hours of research.
I had this same error. Turned out to be a project that was deleted from source control but still referenced in the .sln file. Was difficult to spot as we had >100 projects in the solution.
Had a same problem, project was removed from solution but for some reason SccNumberOfProjects under GlobalSection(TeamFoundationVersionControl) = preSolution in solution file was at wrong count - there was 56 projects in solution and reported number was 57.
Had a similar issue to this. There was a project file which was referenced and had been renamed. The .sln was not aware of the project file name change. The fix was the checkout the .sln file, and update the reference to the project file.
This method is allot easier and less time consuming:
Close the solution.
Go the the folder which contains the solution file.
Delete the hidden ".vs" folder.
It won't do any harm but if you're afraid you can always rename the folder instead of deleting it.
I have an ASP.NET MVC4 application solution (.sln). When I close Visual Studio and then reopen it and my solution, my tabs and my navigation structure in the solution explorer do not restore to the way they were.
The solution is big and it takes me a long time to reopen many tabs and open lots of folders in the solution explorer.
Is there an option in VS that would allow me to restore the solution to where it was when I left it?
I've already done "Reset all settings" in the Import and Export Settings Wizard, but it didn't help.
I've also tried booting VS in /SafeMode which disables any extensions. No difference.
Searching around I can't see anyone have similar issues.
As far as I know the .suo-File saves which files are opened. Try to delete this file (VS will generate it new) and make sure that windows-file-permissions are set correct (read, write access).
I had the same problem with Visual Studio 2013, and I solved it by doing this:
Export my current settings, making sure to UNMARK General Settings > Window Layouts.
Re-import the settings I just exported, but making sure I left General Settings > Window Layouts MARKED now (so it would overwrite the current Window Layouts with the "clean slate" of the imported settings.
Perhaps you can try the Workspace Reloader plugin that Scott Hanselman blogged about?
http://www.hanselman.com/blog/IntroducingWorkspaceReloaderAVisualStudioAddInToSaveYourOpenFilesAcrossProjectReloads.aspx
You can install it from here - http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/6705affd-ca37-4445-9693-f3d680c92f38
Got this issue also for Microsoft Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition.
How to fix :
First, be sure, that tools->Project and solutions->General:'Reopen documents on solution load' and 'Restore Solution Explorer project hierarchy state on solution load' enabled
Second, just close VS and delete .vs folder, then re-start VS.
Works fine for me
I am having issues with check in my code files because of some changes I have made to the project and solution. I have renamed project files, added different project files in the solution and added many files in the existing project.
Now I am getting an error while checking in the code.
The error details are:
Check In: Operation not performed Could not find file
'....Console.csproj.vspscc'.
How do I create a vspscc file if it does not get created on its own?
Any help would be great and thanks in advance.
This looks pretty stupid on my part. I restarted my Visual Studio and I could perform the check in because Visual Studio created the vspscc file when it opened the projects and solution.
Answering my own question as fast as possible so nobody else prints my own negligence before me.
And for anybody who needs an answer as how to create a vspscc file, restart the visual studio IDE
I have also seen this in another situation (VS2012) where a simple restart didn't do the trick.
I had a number of new projects which I had added to an existing solution but in the wrong place. Undoing and re-adding seemed to be fine until check-in, where it complained that the newly added projects and related .vspscc files could not be found. It was looking for them in the original location rather than where they are now.
Resolution was to go to the Source Control Explorer, which still had check-in items against these files in their original (but non-existing) locations, as well as the files in their correct locations. Selecting these errant references and "Undo pending Changes" for these files did resolve the issue.
I'd try using File/SourceControl/ChangeSourceControl dialog and unbind (if necessary) then rebind the project to TFS to recreate the .csproj.vspscc.
I removed projects and have same issue, so my solution was to re-create the same projects with same name, then remove them cleanly :-) I hope this helps
I had a similar problem, but in my case I Visual Studio/TFS couldn't fine the .csproj file. Anyway, with the help of a colleague I was able to determine that the issue was within TFS itself. TFS may have a different view of your source code than Visual Studio does. I had created the wrong type of project (I'll call it Proj1) and deleted it from within VS. Then created the correct project type, which I'll call Proj2. When I when to check it into TFS it complained about Prog1.csproj, which confused me because I couldn't see it within VS. What I learned was that you have to go into TFS's Source Control Explorer. From there you'll see how TFS sees things. Sure enough, there was Proj1.csproj (and some other related files to Proj1). What I had to do within Source Control Explorer was undo the pending check-in's of those files and folders which I didn't want to check in and no longer existed anyway. Then TFS was happy and I could perform the check-in.
I have a Visual Studio 2010 Solution, that is also under source control (TFS 2010). Usually, I have no problem renaming a sub-project; just right-click, rename, and life is good!
However, I now have one project that I'm trying to rename, but whenever i right-click, type in a new name, and then hit enter, it goes right back to the old name!
I must be losing my mind here!
You probably already have a file with the name you are trying to use on the filesystem though not as part of the solution/project.
Use the windows explorer to find and delete this file and you should be good to go.
In the end it seemed like a TFS issue. THere was a lingering shelveset that was mapped to the project that wouldn't allow me to modify it at all. Once I was able to get my TFS admin to make the necessary changes, all was well!
Just try to do Reset Settings
The command "devenv /resetsettings" will restore Visual Studio back to its original factory state. If you have previously saved your settings from option 1 above, you can pass them as a parameter: "devenv /resetsettings ".
Or else if you have saved any previous settings try to import by this path "Tools" > "Import and Export Settings…" and your problem get resolved.
If this is v1 sorry you can't rename it as it is mentioned here http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/9e50138e-46f2-4f7f-ba09-e5624d30250b/
I tried to go offline from TFS but it gave no results =(
So, then I tried to delete 'SolutionName.suo' file and it made the trick! I was able to rename my project. Buggy VS 2010 =(
