Enabled button in a form through access control [duplicate] - c#

I have btnMessage on my form Main, and I also have user control (uc).
When I click btnMessage, it opens the uc and also makes btnMessage.enabled = false. In uc, there's a button that's called btnExecute.
What I want is that when I click on btnExecute in uc, btnMessage in Main form will be disabled. How I can do this?

You can programmatically subscribe to event handlers in the code-behind, so add one to the "parent" form for the "child" form's button:
uc.btnExecute.Click += new EventHandler(name_of_method_to_handle_click_event);
The only requirement is that the control be public so that the parent form can access it.

What I would rather do is raise an event from the user control, which the main form listens to, and then disable the button in this event handler.
Something like User Control Events in VB and C#
This would avoid the user control having to "know" anything about the caller (parent form).
Search a little on SO, you will find a lot of examples for raising events from user controls.

I have two forms, one is the main form and the other is an options form. So say for example that the user clicks on my menu on the main form: Tools -> Options, this would cause my options form to be shown.
My question is how can I send data from my options form back to my main form? I know I could use properties, but I have a lot of options and this seems like an tedious odd thing to do.
So what is the best way?
Form1 triggers Form2 to open. Form2 has overloaded constructor which takes calling form as argument and provides its reference to Form2 members. This solves the communication problem. For example I've exposed Label Property as public in Form1 which is modified in Form2.
With this approach you can do communication in different ways.

The comment is exactly right. The accepted answer is not bad; for simple programs, and especially for people just learning programming and trying to get basic scenarios to work, it's a very useful example of how a pair of forms can interact.
However, it's true that the coupling that example causes can and should be avoided, and that in the particular example, an event would accomplish the same thing in a general-purpose, decoupled way.
Here's an example, using the accepted answer's code as the baseline:

You could in fact just declare a regular method just like the compiler-generated one I show above, and then subscribe that method to the event: frm.Button1Click += frm_Message; (where you have of course used the name frm_Message for the method, just as in my example above).
Regardless of how you do it, of course you will need for Form2 to actually implement that Button1Click event. That's very simple…

By exposing the functionality as an event (and optionally with a property), it makes itself useful without limiting its usefulness to only the Form1 class.
The best in this case would be to have some OptionsService class/interface that is accessible via IServiceProvider.
Just add an event when something changes, and the rest of the app can respond to it.

Assuming you have to update some settings from the child form to the parent form. You can make use of these two ways as well :

You might try AutoMapper. Keep your options in a separate class and then use AutoMapper to shuttle the data between the class and the form.
Create a Class and put all your properties inside the class .. Create a Property in the parent class and set it from your child (options) form
You can have a function in Form B like so:

MVC, MVP, MVVM -- slight overkill for someone admittedly saying they want tutorials. Those are theories that have entire courses dedicated to them.
As already posted, passing an object around is probably easiest. If treating a class as an object (interchangeable in this sense) is new, then you may want to spend another 2-4 weeks figuring out properties and constructors and such.
I'm not a C# master by any means, but these concepts need to be pretty concrete if you want to go much further beyond passing values between two forms (also classes/objects in their own right). Not trying to be mean here at all, it just sounds like you're moving from something like VB6 (or any language with globals) to something far more structured.
Eventually, it will click.

I can't find a good example that's similar to how I do it (which is actually having an actual class+object), but this covers another way of doing it:

A form is a class, just like any other class. Add some public variables to your form class and set them when they click the button to close the form (technically they are just hiding it).
A VB.NET example, but you'll get the idea -
In your OptionsForm class:
Public Option1 as String = ""
etc. Set them when they hit the "Ok" button.
So in your main form, when they hit the "options" button - you create your options form:
OptionsForm.ShowDialog()
when it exits, you harvest your option settings from the public variables on the form:
option1 = OptionsForm.Option1
etc.
The best way to deal with communication between containers is to implement an observer class
The observer pattern is a software design pattern in which an object, called the subject, maintains a list of its dependents, called observers, and notifies them automatically of any state changes, usually by calling one of their methods.

the way i do this is creating an Observer class, and inside it write something like this:

so basically: the first line says that there would be a function that somebody else will implement

and the third line is the creation of the function that calls the event
so in your UserControl, you should add a function like this:

Changing panel control from inside the panel

I am creating an application using WinForms. I have panel in which I show a user control. Inside this user control I have a button. When I click the button, I want to clear the panel and show a different user control. I am trying to do that using the following code:

I suppose it has something to do with private/public classes. But I would rather have the "correct" solution, as opposed to just changing everything to public.
Any suggestions on how this is usually done?

To access the textbox data you need to use: textBox1.Text
a form is an object so you can define a method that updates the text box value (you can expose the textbox itself with a public accessor)
To pass information from a parent from to a child form you should create a property on the child form for the data it needs to receive and then have the parent form set that property (for example, on button click).
To have a child form send data to a parent form the child form should create a property (it only needs to be a getter) with the data it wants to send to the parent form. It should then create an event (or use an existing Form event) which the parent can subscribe to.

I don't know what exactly you mean by saying "without Show()/ShowDialog()", but that is not relevant anyway or I'll just assume here further that you have both windows open (doesn't matter how you accomplished that).
You would like to avoid much coupling between two forms, especially not implementation details like a textbox etc. You could work with delegates and events to trigger the "sending" of data between your two forms. You can then easily pass event data and your subscribed other form (or any other object as a matter of fact) doesn't know the exact implementation details of your form, it only knows the data it will receive through the delegate (event). Pass Value Selected From a User Control to a Parent

I have a Winform dialog that contains several user controls - all of them are some sort of Datagridview. The main parent has details about a user, and the user controls each have additional details on that person. When my Dialog first loads all of the UserControls work but I am trying to figure out how to update the UserControl2 based on a position change in UserControl1.
So, I am trying to select a row in UserControl1 and have the data in UserControl2 update based on a value that I just selected.
I have tried using MouseDownEvents on the UserControl1 and BindingSourcePositionChanged but I can't figure out how to get the value selected back to my parent form and then use that value to refresh the other datagrids?
I looked at delegates and events but I guess the lack of sleep is making it incredibly hard to comprehend. I understand that I need to create my delegate and event on the UserControl1 and then somehow call it on my mainform but that's where I get stuck and have no clue where to start.
Is this the right direction? Or is there another way to get this done? Can anyone offer up any suggestions on how this works?
