Is it possibe to save date in remote database (on server) by mobile with WP7? I wolud like to use ADO.NET and insert some values. If it is not possible what else can I use?
AFAIK you can't - I'm 100% positive you can't in WP8 or WinRT, so I assume it also holds for WP7.
The best you can do is host a web-service somewhere that will provide a RESTful access to the database, then use WebClient (or whatever way you prefer to make a HTTP request) in the phone app to call the service.
Here is a very cool tutorial :

I currently develop one web based software (Like library) (In PHP with MySQL) and now I Plan to develop that for smart phone and desktop. So I came to phonegap for smart phone. but now how can I grab data from my MySQL database to app? is it possible with JSON ? How ?
Other Question is that how can I use that app which develop in Phonegap while device is not connected to internet? My Same problem is with windows based software which I'm going to develop in C#.
Thanks...
Any type of help will appreciated.
to grab data from your MySQL database, you will need to create some PHP controller on your server to which you will send POST/GET requests from your app to retrieve/update data.
to have the app working offline, you must store previously downloaded data within devices database or introduce some caching solution (angular provides one, for example).
You should use GET/POST method in php to return the database result have wrap the whole sql result in json_encode function
i.e
echo json_encode($result);
in your offline storage you can use websql which will store it in your device storage.
since its deprecated you should probably use indexeddb for localstorage.
yes ajax will be most commonly used like $.getJSON(); methods but my favorite is
var jsonp = document.createElement("script");
jsonp.type = "text/javascript";
jsonp.src = "http://foo.com/api/ad?foo_var=4345&callback=displayinfo";
document.getElementsByTagName("body")[0].appendChild(jsonp);
function displayinfo(data) { //do your stuff }
I am building an application that needs to connect to a server to send and retrieve data constantly.
at first i was going to use mysql, by mysql is far from what i want. using this would force users to connect to the database constantly.
CAN C# silverlight connect to a server and send a message?
here is an example to something in C# console, VERY similar to what i am trying to achieve
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kcrTKj7Jpk
Any documentation would also be helpful.
To be more specific my server will be written with C# console, but i want my c# silverlight to send the message.
Yes.
CAN C# silverlight connect to a server and send a message?
Traditionally, the way that Silverlight has connected to a server to send a message is with WCF services. This still works well, but the other option is REST.
What you will need to do is write a layer (or use an ORM like Entity Framework) to persist data from whichever database platform you choose (MySQL or otherwise). Then you will need to write REST, or WCF services on top of this. You will then need to consume the services from your Silverlight application.
There are many articles on this if you Google. Here is one of the ones that comes up instantly:

One thing you must consider with Silverlight, is that by default, Silverlight will only talk to the server that the Xap package is hosted on. So, if you need the Silverlight app to talk to a different server, you will need to set up and expose a clientaccesspolixy.xml from the server where the WCF/REST services are hosted. This is a stupid limitation that Microsoft made a big mistake on in the first place. Here is an article about it:

I have a project assignment from the university and want to ask you if you can show me the right approach. I'm not asking for any code or to write me something. I just want some guidelines to follow.
Firstly, to explain a bit.. I have to design and implement an Info System in .NET. It should have a Desktop App (based on Windows Forms), a Mobile App (Windows Phone 7.1) and a database (MS SQL). The idea is to have a database, hosted on a remote machine. The desktop and mobile apps should be able to connect to that database and do some stuff with it (mobile app will be only for viewing data, not modifying). The system must be multi-client - the database should be able to be accessed from multiple desktop and mobile clients at a time.
I'm ready with the GUI and it's time to do some real work. What's the easiest way to get that communication done? I thought of a WCF Service Application, which will provide the clients' access to the DB. My idea is to have the database and the service on a machine with a public IP address. The apps (desktop and mobile) will connect to that machine and respectively to the SQL through the WCF.
I saw some tutorials around, but didn't find one that shows how to make that WCF Service work with both Windows Forms app and Windows Phone app. I'm not very familiar with WCF - should I have IIS to run the service? I'm also not sure what kind of techniques I have to use on the client side to do the connection...
Is this approach rght? Can this be done in the way I explained? What should I be aware of? I will appreciate every kind of advise and reproach.
The easiest (and in your case, most efficient) way would be to use Windows Azure. For the purpose of your project, you can always sign up for the free trial.
Specifically, you can leverage Windows Azure SQL Database. Or, if you are so inclined, you could use Mobile Services, which also relies on SQL databases but you will have a much better time setting it up in your Windows Phone app (doesn't matter whether you want to read or write data).
I am struggling to figure out how to connect to a MySql database in my C# Windows Phone 8 application like I can on my desktop application. The reason I am struggling is because it seems I cannot just use the same MySql.Data library that I used on my desktop application. Are there any other libraries that I can use to access my database?
PS. I really don't want to go the PHP route because I will have to have Apache running on y server two and will have to add JSON interfacing two which will not only be a hassle but possibly also waste some processing time and make my application more complex.
PPS. If not possible with MySql, can it be made to work with Microsoft SQL Server or Azure?
EDIT:
If some sort of HTTP interface is my only option, is there some easy existing API or something that I can use to allow SQL data transmission or will I have to create specific PHP(/asp.net or whatever) code for each type request that I am planning to send?
Hi
I would like to retrieve documents from an ftp in my Windows phone 7 application (built with XNA in my case).
As far as I understand WP7 does not support ftp due to port and protocol(?) contraints.
Is there any way to get ftp support working?
I guess I will be able to implement it my self once socket support is added but I dopn't wan't to wait for that.
Cheers
/Jimmy
Since there are no supported socket capabilities in the initial release of WinPhone , you cannot directly FTP. You would have to create an "FTP Proxy" web service which your phone would call and have the service do the actual FTP and relay the files.
FTP and Sockets are not supported by the platform at the moment.
If you want to get remote files on to your phone you'll have to use HTTP(S).
You can do this either with the HttpWebRequest or WebClient classes depending on your specific needs.
Do you want to retrieve files fromn the phone, and over the cellular network? If so you need to confirm your operator allows ftp connections to your phone, which they probably do not.
If you're connecting over wifi, you've got more chance of this working.
Otherwise, you could implement a dropbox-style approach where the phone and your file-retrieving application both connect to a remote server
If this is for development purposes, you can get access to the phones storage and copy in files by using Microsoft's SmartDevices API.
I'm trying to do the same but so far the only way I've found around it is to create a web service to run on my own server which retrieves the FTP files on behalf on the phone.
Wish MS would hurry up and give us sockets - calling a web service is fine but I'm pretty sure it would be slower than directly getting the FTP files from the phone itself.
