How to get the text property of a hyperlink - c#

There is no .Text property on hyperlink in WPF
looking to get the text in the click event and the only way so far is
Run r = hyperlink.Inlines.First() as Run;
gotText( r.Text );
Somehow this seems rather convoluted given that hyperlinks do have a text/content
Or is this an oversight or perhaps there's a better reason why this property does not exist ?

I believe that this is because a hyperlink can potentially have multiple runs of text.

This is because the Hyperlink control is derived from the TextElement Class. Specifically it is supposed to be a control that is able to sit within flow content. While one might initially view the control as something simple like a TextBox, but in order for the Hyperlink control to fit nicely within FlowContent it needs to have a similar structure to other flow content elements.

I've been reading some explanations about the difference between User and Custom Controls, for example this:

I want to create, for example, a simple composition of a datagrid with 2 comboboxes which are responsible to change the values from the datagrid's items. I want to create a specific control for this because I'm going to use it a lot of times. I would like to implement the logic behind and then in the xaml invocation I only have to specify the itemsSource.
For this example should I create a User or Custom control? Since I will have properties and logic, should I have a viewmodel for this control?

Choice is not only between user control and custom control, but among user control, custom control, customizing control template, customizing data template, header template (for collection based controls), attached properties.

I go by following order of consideration
Attached Properties : If functionality can be achieved, I use attached properties. Example, Numeric text box.
Control Template : When requirement can be fulfilled by customizing the control template, I use this. Example, circular progress bar.
Custom control: If control template cannot do it, I use custom control. Provided I need to customize/extend already present control. Example providing Sorting, Filtering based on header row in GridView (GridView is present in metro apps, used just to illustrate the example)
User control: Least preferred one. Only when composition is required, and I am unable to do it using custom control. Like in your example, 2 Combobox, and 1 datagrid. User controls does not provide seamless lookless feature that can be leveraged through custom control or control template.
You already have some great answers that explain the differences but also understand that custom controls and UserControls have different purposes:
A UserControl typically encapusulates some sort of composite behaviour. If you have an application that needs to edit contact details in many places, for example, you could create a custom control that has the labels and text fields for all the data laid out with a submit button that has the relevant code and reuse this control throughout your application.
A custom control is a control that is derived from one of the WPF control classes (E.G. Control, ContentControl etc.) and has to be created in code.
These control usually have a single cohesive purpose (think TextBox, ComboBox, Label) rather than acting together as a whole (although this doesn't have to be the case).
UserControl's are usually easier for people unfamiliar with WPF as they can be visually designed.
My suggestion would be to start off with a UserControl. You can always refactor this into a custom control at a later date as you become more familiar with the way WPF works. Creating your control as a custom control will require knowledge of ControlTemplates and Styles as you will need to provide your own to define a look and feel for your control.
When all is said and done, as long as the control behaves correctly, it doesn't matter which approach you use.
See this post for an example of two approaches to the same problem. The post author wanted a control which can present modal content in front of the primary content. The post author actually answered his own question by implementing it as a UserControl. I have added an answer to the post which creates the control as a custom control but both have the same end effect.
If you have a view-model and you wish to create a view for it use the User-Control.
If you need an autonomous control that has no specific view-model,
you probably need a custom-control.
If you find that the functionality you need as whole, already exist in other controls you need to override an existing control template.
(i.e: for a diamond shaped button - you need to override the button control template.)
Regarding attached-properties and attached-behaviors, those are useful when you have a control which you want to extend with more properties or you want it to behave slightly different than its default behavior.
In the provided case of the composition the OP described, it can be achieved with either user control or custom control. I would prefer a custom control since there is no specific view model provided, the "input" is only a property bound to an item collection.

The best explanation is in the msdn. CustomControl is more a "virtual" name, there is no class called "CustomControl" in WPF, instead its meant creating a new class building on top of one of WPF control classes, like Control, ItemsControl and even more specific Controls like TextBox or Button.
For your specific case, a UserControl should be enough, creating a CustomControl is something that can easily be avoided. While its not a bad thing, a lot of people, especially beginners in WPF coming from WinForms tend to subclass more then necessary.
If this is somehow your first time building controls, I recommend UserControl as VS lets you design its interface more easily. Custom Controls are more powerful, but you have to CLEARLY separate your control's logic from its interface and this requires a bit more preparation.
You can easily Visually design CustomControl.
Create new UserControl (or Window). Create its xaml structure visually in Designer. Copy-paste body of the resulting xaml inside ControlTemplate of your new CustomControl (Eg. in generic theme file).
If I remember right, you are also able to visually design CustomControl template directly, in Blend.
Of course you can also instance the wip CustomControl in a Window and put the Window's Designer view as new panel above the control's xaml view in VisualStudio.
Some xaml bindings from style template don't show in Designer like this though, until I rebuild.

Well to create a Custom control you need to implement it as a User control. Your own User control is called a Custom control. It is pretty simple.
UserControl is the base class for containing your custom content :

I don't totally agree with the article. However in your case you need a UserControl that you can re-use latter in your UI.

Best way to add "dynamic" controls?

My program will prompt the user for a number, i.e. 25. The program will then start the "main form" with 25 controls (textbox). The 25 (or whatever number) of textboxes (or whatever control) will need to be formatted evenly. I will also need to be able to retrieve the text (or another property if I use another control) in order, from left to right and up to down. What is the best method of approaching this?
Using WPF MVVM. In a .XAML file, create a DataTemplate with the DataType of a ViewModel that will provide the binding for your TextBoxs, lets call this the TextboxViewModel. Then using a ItemsControl element with an ItemsSource of TextboxViewModel. You'll be able to instantiate as many TextBoxs as you want and be able to get the result by browsing through your list of TextboxViewModel.
Supposing you are using Windows Forms here.
Dynamically create the X controls and add them to the Controls collection of your form. To ease the access to them you can store their reference in a List and set some event handlers too, depending on your needs. You just need to calculate their positions while you add them.
If WinForms, this is exactly what the FlowLayoutPanel is for. Just add the controls to it and they will arrange themselves automatically, wrapping down to the next row as needed. As Mihai already suggested, you could also keep reference to those controls in a List.
Another option would be to use a TableLayoutPanel. It's a little more difficult to learn and use, but is much more flexible and powerful.

Dashboard controls in Winforms

I am working on a WinForm based applications(Yes I don't know WPF) and want's a dashboard like panels in it. Picture given below
Each panel will have a title and records from Database and some action controls. How could this be achieved? I don't want to use GridControl as I don't want to show Excel like spreadsheet here. How could this be achieved?
It sounds like you want to make a UserControl, possibly coupled with an automatic layout panel like FlowLayoutPanel.
Simply speaking, you would create a UserControl with whatever properties and events you require (i.e. in your example you might have a Title property and a Data property), and any events you need to respond to (e.g. you might have a button that you provide a wrapper event for). Then you can add the control to your existing form as you would any other standard control.
As far as displaying data in list form goes, one suggestion is to use a Panel and dynamically add Labels to it. Another idea could be just a simple Label with line breaks in the Text.

WPF (irc) chat log control

I'm trying to learn WPF and was thinking about creating a simple IRC client. The most complicated part is to create the chat log. I want it to look more or less like the one in mIRC:

The important parts are that the text should be selectable, lines should wrap and it should be able to handle quite large logs.
The alternatives that I can come up with are:
StackPanel inside a ScrollViewer where each line is a row
ListView, since that seems more suitable for dynamic content/data binding.
Create an own control that does the rendering on its own.
Is there any WPF guru out there that has some ideas on which direction to take and where to start?
I suggest you start with a good object model independent of the UI, and then try a multi-line TextBox or a RichTextBox.
Whether these will suffice will depend on exactly how long you want the log to be able to get. If you run into performance issues, you may need to look at virtualization.
First of all, you should consider if you want to select only entire row (like in a listbox), or if you want to select certain characters from a row (like in a textbox).
In the first case, I think a ListView or even a ListBox should be enough, both of them support virtualization when bound to collection and there should be no problem with huge amounts of data. A stack panel inside a ScrollViewer is a little bit like reinventing the wheel for this case and creating a new control is not a very inspired approach in my opinion (as the functionality you want can be achieved with the existing controls, in WPF).
In the second case, if you want to select some text inside of a line, or if you want word wrapping for your longest lines in the log and want to select individual parts of the wrapped lines, then you need to use a control more oriented on displaying text. Kent already suggested a RichTextBox, I would add AvalonEdit control or even the WebBrowser control in which you directly modify its HTMLDocument.
I would suggest to use RichTextBox too, and store items in a log file or database, if you run into performance issues.
Another solution is to use the WPF WebBrowser control and modifiy its HTML content with:

Content within a user control

I am almost too embarrassed to ask this question, but here we go...
I am not an expert with user controls, and need some design advise regarding trying to achieve a specific desired functionality.
The goal is to have a usercontrol that would render as a complex structure of html elements and css to form an elegant container box. The problem lies in how to populate the contents of the box as each instance of the usercontrol would have its own individual HTML content. The content container div of the usercontrol would be nested deep within the structure of the rendered html. It is undesirable to programmatically set the contents of the usercontrol, or use properties.
In psuedo-code, the desired syntax would be something like:
<usercontrol Title="Some Title"><p>some random html content</p></usercontrol>
A sample of the rendered usercontrol would be:
<div class="CommonBox">
<div class="Title">Some Title</div>
<div class="Content"><p>some random html content</p></div>
</div>
I hope my explanation is adequate. Does this make sense to anyone or is the desired functionality unachievable?

I attempted the templated user control suggestion in the hopes of coming to a decent solution. I "waybacked" this site and now have a working templated user control. My next question is, how can I programmatically access the controls nested within the template... say there is a textbox control in the "Description" template from the example link and I want to set its value programmatically? Is this possible?
What you're looking for is definitely possible. One solution is to create a templated user control. In the end you can define the contents similar to how your example looks. Something like:

Yes this is very possible. First you can create a custom control as I describe in this post. Properties in the control become attributes like "Title" you have in your example. Then you can extend your control with the technique shown in this post to add child nodes for the other html inputs you will require.

It looks like you need two properties for your custom server control.
Title property to render first inner div's content,
Content for the second one. If you want to set contents inside your server control, you should use [PersistenceMode(PersistenceMode.InnerDefaultProperty)] attribute for your property, like this :
