Common.Logging support of logging to file. - c#

I was looking through the documentation for common logging and didn't notice any support for writing to a log file outside of leveraging other logging technologies such as Log4Net, Enterprise library, Nlog etc. I just wanted to know if anyone knows of a way to configure Common.Logging to write to a file or if I have to fall back to another logging technology wrapped into common.logging.

You pick a particular logging framework to use with Common Logging and configure that for logging to file. For example, if you wanted to use log4net with Common Logging, you might have a config file that looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<configuration>
<configSections>
<sectionGroup name="common">
<section name="logging" type="Common.Logging.ConfigurationSectionHandler, Common.Logging"/>
</sectionGroup>
<section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler, log4net"/>
</configSections>
<startup>
<supportedRuntime version="v4.0" sku=".NETFramework,Version=v4.0"/>
</startup>
<common>
<logging>
<factoryAdapter type="Common.Logging.Log4Net.Log4NetLoggerFactoryAdapter, Common.Logging.Log4Net">
<arg key="configType" value="INLINE"/>
</factoryAdapter>
</logging>
</common>
<log4net>
<appender name="FileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.FileAppender" >
<param name="File" value="log.txt" />
<layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout">
<conversionPattern value="%date [%thread] %level %logger - %message%newline" />
</layout>
</appender>
<root>
<level value="DEBUG" />
<appender-ref ref="FileAppender" />
</root>
</log4net>
<runtime>
<assemblyBinding xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1">

<assemblyIdentity name="Common.Logging" publicKeyToken="af08829b84f0328e" culture="neutral"/>
<bindingRedirect oldVersion="0.0.0.0-2.1.2.0" newVersion="2.1.2.0"/>
</dependentAssembly>

log4net not creating output file

I am new to logging and trying out with different appenders. I am trying to output the logs to a log file at a specific location. Though code is compiling and running fine. It is also showing Console logs but it is not adding those logs to output file. Here's my code:
Console file:
namespace LoggerTest
{
class Program
{
private static readonly ILog log = LogManager.GetLogger("General");
static void Main(string[] args)
{
GlobalContext.Properties["logFilePath"] = #"C:\Users\Z004N84C\Desktop\Output.log";
XmlConfigurator.Configure();
log.Info("This is info log");
}
}
}
and here's my app.config file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<configuration>
<configSections>
<section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler, log4net" />
</configSections>
<startup>
<supportedRuntime version="v4.0" sku=".NETFramework,Version=v4.7.2" />
</startup>

<bindingRedirect oldVersion="0.0.0.0-6.0.0.0" newVersion="6.0.0.0" />
</dependentAssembly>
</assemblyBinding>
</runtime>
<log4net>
<!-- A1 is set to be a ConsoleAppender -->
<appender name="A1" type="log4net.Appender.ConsoleAppender">
<!-- A1 uses PatternLayout -->
<layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout">
<conversionPattern value="%date %5level %logger %method [%line] - %message%newline" />
</layout>
</appender>
<appender name="FileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.FileAppender">
<file value="%property{logFilePath}/ToolLog.log" />
<appendToFile value="true" />
<layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout">

</layout>
</appender>
<!-- Set root logger level to DEBUG and its only appender to A1 -->
<root>
<level value="DEBUG" />
<appender-ref ref="A1" />
<appender-ref ref="FileAppender" />
</root>
</log4net>
</configuration>
In above file I have added log4net configs.
I am not sure what I am missing.
I tried various configs but not able to figure this out. Need to create output file.

log4net fails to create log file

im trying to set up logging for a group c# project using log4net for the 1st time and while no issues seem to arise when running my code, and the lines responsible for logging are definately being executed no log file is created and nothing is logged. nither in a log file or in console.
my log4net.config:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<configuration>
<log4net>
<root>
<level value="ALL" />
<appender-ref ref="console" />
<appender-ref ref="file" />
</root>
<appender name="console" type="log4net.Appender.ConsoleAppender">
<layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout">
<conversionPattern value="%date %level %logger - %message%newline" />
</layout>
</appender>
<appender name="file" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender">
<file value="myapp.log" />
<appendToFile value="true" />
<rollingStyle value="Size" />
<maxSizeRollBackups value="5" />
<maximumFileSize value="10MB" />
<staticLogFileName value="true" />
<layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout">
<conversionPattern value="%date [%thread] %level %logger - %message%newline" />
</layout>
</appender>
</log4net>
</configuration>

i also have the line [assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(ConfigFile = "log4net.config",Watch =true)] added to my AssemblyInfo.cs
the code itself is along the lines of:
private static readonly log4net.ILog log = log4net.LogManager.GetLogger(System.Reflection.MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod().DeclaringType);
log.Debug("this is a test log.");
also it's worth noting that im executing this project from a secondary project.
i tried following a setup guide but i must have missed something, i would very much appriciate some help.

Log4net in web job: unrecognized configuration section log4net - but I have configSections in top

So I have a super weird issue. I have an Azure Web Job, where I want to have log4net added.
I have the following web.config file, which has the same elements as my web application which works. Please notice how my log4net declaration in configSections are in the top:

However, when I open the log on the Azure Web job in the dashboard:
Unhandled Exception: System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: Configuration system failed to initialize ---> System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: Unrecognized configuration section log4net. (D:\local\Temp\jobs\continuous\CommunicationSender\13a4pcai.5fk\CommunicationSender.exe.config line 70)
Anyone have any clue what is going on here? :-) What am I missing?
I initialize the log4net in the code like this, but I assume this is never hit because of configuration problem:
static void Main()
{
log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator.Configure();
ILog log = log4net.LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(Program));
log.Info("CommunicationSender STARTED! :-)");
var config = new JobHostConfiguration();
if (config.IsDevelopment)
{
config.UseDevelopmentSettings();
}
var host = new JobHost();
// The following code ensures that the WebJob will be running continuously
host.RunAndBlock();
}
The problem was solved by one of my employees. He pointed out that the configSection needs to be before the ConnectionStrings.
After switching those around, it worked!

Exception in Common.Logging.dll: Failed obtaining configuration for Common.Logging from configuration section 'common/logging'

Before you wonder, I've read the
Similar Topic
and tried renaming the 'Common.Logging.Log4Net' in factory adapter-Tag in app.config but this didn't help me. Also I tried commenting out the startup-Tag and runtime-Tag.
So I've downloaded the Common.Logging.LogNet1213.3.3.1 NuGet Package. Now in my project there are the packages
Common.Logging.3.3.1
Common.Logging.Core.3.3.1
Common.LoggingLog4Net1213.3.3.1
log4net.2.0.5
According to the Documentation I filled my app.config, which now looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<configuration>
<startup>
<supportedRuntime version="v4.0" sku=".NETFramework,Version=v4.5" />
</startup>

My C# Console App for trying Common.Logging looks like this:
using Common.Logging;
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;
using System.Threading.Tasks;
namespace CommonLogging
{
class Program
{
static void Main(string[] args)
{
ILog log = LogManager.GetLogger<Program>();
log.Debug("qwerty");
}
}
}
The exception appears in the initialisation line of ILog log and this is the message:
An unhandled exception of type 'Common.Logging.ConfigurationException' occurred in Common.Logging.dll
Additional information: Failed obtaining configuration for Common.Logging from configuration section 'common/logging'.
You're getting a ConfigurationException because your configuration is invalid, specifically the position of the <configSections> element:
Only one <configSections> element allowed per config file and if present must be the first child of the root element
So your config file should look like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<configuration>
<configSections>
<sectionGroup name="common">
<section name="logging"
type="Common.Logging.ConfigurationSectionHandler, Common.Logging" />
</sectionGroup>
<section name="log4net"
type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler, log4net"/>
</configSections>
<!-- everything else -->

tfs build will not find the configuration section

When building locally and debugging my application locally, I have no problem logging and using log4net; however, when I do a TFS Build, I am getting the following exception:
log4net:ERROR Failed to find configuration section 'log4net' in the application's .config file. Check your .config file for the <log4net> and <configSections> elements. The configuration section should look like: <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler,log4net" />
I've tried fiddling around with the AssemblyInfo.cs file by commenting and uncommenting this line:
[assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(Watch = true)]
I've also tried to comment/uncomment this:
XmlConfigurator.Configure();

What am I doing wrong? Why is it that everything works fine locally, but when building with tfs it breaks?
1) Try checking the build definition that TFS Build is executing is using the config file you think it is. i.e. debug vs release
2) I assume you are getting that exception when your TFS Build is running unit tests or running your code after it has been built. If so, check your .config file and the log4net dlls are copied to the binaries directory along with your compiled code.
You may need to configure the unit tests' Test Settings file to achieve what you want and use a specific TestSettings file for your TFS build that is different to the one on your local PC.
