Func delegate to declared method - c#

Having these two methods declared in a non-generic class, which share the same signature:

How can I create a delegate that represents these methods' signature?
I can't seem to get it, I tried:
private Func<TypeResolverConfiguration<T>, TypeResolverResult<T>> _typeResolveFunc;
But obvious this does not work because the class is non-generic and I can't change that.

Update From what I can see, an approach like this should work, as long as ATypeResolver has a where T : class on Resolve<T>:

This uses a custom delegate type (a Func like you have should work too):
public delegate TypeResolverResult<T> TypeResolver<T>(
TypeResolverConfiguration<T> typeResolverConfiguration) where T : class;
If you like, you can move the var typeResolver = ... line to its own method, to separate the logic and allow you to use it from more than just Resolve. If you did that, Resolve might be as simple as: return GetTypeResolver<T>()(new TypeResolverConfiguration<T>());.

You seem to not understand exactly how generics work. I'll give a quick overview, but read the MSDN.
When you have a generic class
public class Foo<T>
{
public T Bar {get; set;}
}
And you use it something like this
Foo<int> intFoo = new Foo<int>();
Foo<string> stringFoo = new Foo<string();
At compile time, the compiler will detect the two usages of the generic type. It will create a type of each usage. So your assembly will have types that look something like this (no not exactly, but let's play pretend so that we humans can understand).
public class FooInt
{
public int Bar { get; set; }
}
public class FooString
{
public string Bar { get; set; }
}
And it will replace all uses of Foo<int> with FooInt and Foo<string> with FooString
Now if we have a non-generic class with a generic method
public class Foo
{
public T GetBar<T>() { ..... }
}
And you use it like this
Foo foo = new Foo();
int x = foo.GetBar<int>();
string s = foo.GetBar<string();
The compiler will generate
public class Foo
{
public int GetBarInt() { ..... }
public string GetBarString() { ..... }
}
And it will replace GetBar<T> with GetBarInt and GetBar<string> with GetBarString
But fields aren't like that. If you have a class that looks like so
public class Foo
{
public T Bar;
}
You cannot do this
Foo foo = new Foo();
foo.Bar<int> = 1;
foo.Bar<string> = "test";
The compiler just doesn't understand that. I'm not an expert on the internals, but my guess is that because this points to a place in memory, the compile cannot generate the generic usages at compile time.
But the point I am trying to make is this. Generics are not some magical "I don't need to specify the type" feature. They are hints to the compile that say "I am going to do this same thing multiple times, I want you to generate the code for me."

C# Passing current generic class instance to other class

lately I started to learn generics. I run into trouble with storing references to generic classes instances. As you can see, my class ListHandler can store references to specific type of BaseClass. I would love to register BaseClass instances by themselves, which is why I wanted to guarantee that they will use BaseParamClass by adding 'where'. Anyway - it does not compile.'This', does not know that T is actually BaseClassParam even with 'where' keyword in class. I don't know what is wrong here and I couldn't find answer anywhere. I would be grateful for tips/guides/solutions.

I have another option for you.
Let's split the BaseClass<T> class into two with a non-generic base, like so:

We also can then define two methods for registering and fetching generic versions of the BaseClass<T> from the ListHandler. It would look like this:

list = new List<BaseClass>();

The result from this code is True is written to the console - which means I can successfully fetch the instance of BaseClass<FooParam> from the ListHandler.
Why your code doesn't compile
In order to fully understand why your code doesn't compile, you'll have to dive into covariance and contravariance, which is a big topic and hard to explain in an SO answer. It can be especially confusing if you've gotten to a point where inheritance polymorphism is second nature to you; the rules are just different enough to be make your head hurt.
Here is what is confusing--
You're used to doing this:
object a = new String(...);
But generics don't let you do this!
List<object> c = new List<string>(); //Compiler error
That's because those two Lists are not related the same way that object and string are related. One does not inherit from the other. Rather, they are different variants of a generic type definition. In the generic world, you can't assign one to the other. The same is true of this:
void Foo<T>() where T: BaseParamClass
{
BaseClass<BaseParamClass> a = new BaseClass<T>(); //Compiler error
}
In this example, T could be BaseParamClass or one of its derived types. They are not the same type. So to remain type-safe, the compiler has to disallow this assignment, and your Register call, which has the same type mismatch.
Standard ways around this
You need a covariant interface. These allow assignment from derived to base. So for example, while this is still illegal:
List<object> a = new List<string>(); //Compiler error
This is totally fine:
IEnumerable<object> e = new List<string>(); //Is OK
Because IEnumerable was declared to be covariant, like this:
interface IEnumerable<out T>
Which means it is can be assigned in this way. It works because using out also adds a compiler constraint to the interface: it can be used to retrieve stuff...
interface IEnumerable<out T>
{
T Item[int index];
}
...but it cannot accept anything:
interface IEnumerable<out T>
{
Add(T item); //Compiler error
}
These constraints are what allow generics to provide early-bound type safety while still allowing certain forms of (non-inheritance) polymorphism.
What I'd suggest
Based on your comment, it sounds like you just need a container (a stack, apparently) that can hold references to these BaseClass<T> instances. If you are following separation of concerns, the stack doesn't need to actually do anything with the T, other than store it and retrieve it, and to allow it to register itself.
Since that is a separate concern, make a separate interface.
And in the interest of keeping things simple, maybe avoid using generics completely for this bit.
One way to do it--
Create an interface that allows access to everything the stack needs to know about an item it is containing. For example, if the stack contains popups of various kinds, you may want to expose the popup's title.

I accepted Eric's answer since it provides a great explanation of why what I wanted wasn't possible, but I also thought I'd share my solution in case anyone else runs into this same problem.
I removed the generic type parameter from my original BaseView class, and created a 2nd version of the BaseView class that included the generic type parameter and specifics for it.
The first version is used by my .Resolve() method or other code that doesn't care about the specific types, and the second version is used by any code that does care, such as the implentation of a BaseView
Here's an example of how my code ended up looking

You're expecting to treat the type as being covariant with respect to the generic argument. Classes can never be covariant; you'd need to use an interface rather than (or in addition to) an abstract class to make it covariant with respect to T. You'd also need to be using C# 4.0.
My usual solution to this problem is to create an intermediary class that has access to the type-parametric class's methods through delegates. Fields can also be accessed through getters/setters.
The general pattern goes:

You're expecting to treat the type as being covariant with respect to the generic argument. Classes can never be covariant; you'd need to use an interface rather than (or in addition to) an abstract class to make it covariant with respect to T. You'd also need to be using C# 4.0.
My usual solution to this problem is to create an intermediary class that has access to the type-parametric class's methods through delegates. Fields can also be accessed through getters/setters.
The general pattern goes:

The above exemplifies getting all the methods and fields but normally I only need a few of them. This is a general solution to the problem and one could feasibly write a tool to generate these intermediary classes automatically, which I might at some point.

And there you go, now you can literally cast a MyAbstractType<Sub> where Sub : Super to a MyAbstractType<Super>, although it's no longer the same object anymore, but it does retain the same methods and data, it's sort of a complex pointer.

Can I define a property which is available to both the class type and instances of the class?

I have an interface for a base class, and every class that inherits from the base class should have an identifying field which tells the application what kind of object it is.
I wanted to use this property in two different ways:
Without creating an instance of the object
if (someValue == TestA.Id)
return new TestA();
elseif (someValue == TestB.Id)
return new TestB();
And as a property of the interface
void DoSomething(ITest testObject)
{
SomeValue = testObject.Id;
}
Is there an easy way to define the Id field in the interface, but still have it available to use without creating an instance of the class?
Right now I am using the following code. I could add a read-only Id property to the interface which returns the const string, however I was hoping there was a simpler way that I'm just not aware of.

In short - no.
In order to be able to do this, you'd need to be able to specify this as a instance property on the interface (and implement it in the instance), and as a static property on the type.
The compiler won't let you do this.
You can put it in the interface, and also have it as a static property. Something like:

public static Id { get { return 1; } }
public Id { get { return Class.Id; } }

I've faced a similar problem, Rachel, and I've always (unfortunately) resorted to having that factory code rely on reflection to get a "TypeID" public static property on each concrete type... thus making an additional aspect of the contractual interface, but not having it in the C# interface code.
You could do it this way.

How to call a generic with restrictions when type is known only at runtime

I would like to have a class that handles population of lists of data from a drop down that can take any type as I would rather have the external code looking like:
listProvider.For<AnEnumType>().And<AClass>.GetLists();
than
listProvider.ForEnum<AnEnumType>().ForClass<AClass>.GetLists();
Here is the example code

At compile time the complier doesn't know that T is a class, but I know it will at runtime. I can call this with reflection:
bar.GetType().GetMethod("GetData").MakeGenericMethod(typeof(T));
however, I can't cast the result back to (IProvideList) when invoking the method because T must be a referenceType
Is there any way to get around this?
Instead of just Bar you can use Bar<T> and it all falls naturally to:

I eventually managed to get around this by doing reflection:
bar.GetType().GetMethod("GetData").MakeGenericMethod(typeof(T));
Then not attempting to cast the result, but accessing all methods and functions I required for the result via reflection to so:
var listProviderType = typeof (IProvideList<>).MakeGenericType(typeof (T));
var result = istProviderImplType.GetMethod("MethodINeedToCall").Invoke(listProviderImpl, null);
Not exactly the nicest code I know but it achieves the result I want.
