Whenever i try to debug a solution for windows mobile 6 I am met with this error
The project works on other machines around the office and has worked on my machine before. My guess is a setting has changed on my machine that is causing this to fail but I haven't found any solutions.

I am running VS2015 CTP6 on a freshly installed and updated Windows 8.1 N x64 VM.
Hyper-V support is enabled, hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE"and vhv.enable = "TRUE" are set to vmx-file.
When i try to run the build with a Visual Studio Emulator for Android-device VS will tell me "starting emulator" forever. No error, no window, nothing at all.
The included AVDs (like AVD_GalaxyNexus_ToolsForApacheCordova) start fine, just the new Microsoft VS Emulator for Android isn't working.
After canceling the building-process a message pops up: "Could not start emulated device 'VS Emulator....'" which will now always pop up instantly (after building) if i hit F5. So after canceling the build once VS won't even try to start the emulator again (on that project with that specific emulation-device).
In hyper-v-manager there are no computers at all. \Microsoft Visual Studio Emulator for Android\1.0\ does not contain a XDE.exe but 2 vsemu.vhd's.
I also followed this guide and tried to start the emulator as a standalone.
"pathto\XDE.exe" -vhd "pathto\vsemu.api19.vhd" which will actually start it up and displays "loading" on the emu screen but will crash because i haven't installed the Windows Phone support in VS.
The Visual Studio Emulator for Android can't be run nested inside another VM, particularly not a Hyper-V VM, because the emulator itself is a Hyper-V VM (and Hyper-V doesn't support nested VMs). See the last bullet in "Current limitations" at the end of this blog post.
My emulators disappeared (according to VS) after CTP6 update although all the images, SDKs etc. are still there.
I sorted it with a repair (control panel, programs, vs => modify.) It took many hours do just let it run.
Double check that the VM you are running on has enough memory(emulator will use a lot- and run Procmon to see what VS does and where it fails. Check event log and turn on logging for the VS instance you are using to look for cues.
"The Visual Studio Emulator for Android can't be run nested inside another VM"- is incorrect. My Windows10 VM is happily serving up the emulator for the different platforms and the same goes for Windows 8.1 & 8.
HyperV doesn't seem to be able to support quite yet (AFAIK) but there are other hypervisors you can use such as VMWare player- and from your config edits in the VM I assume you already knew that :)
I'll provide picture proof later (phone only right now so I'll have to edit typos as well later).
Tweaking Virtual Maschine Settings did the trick for me. I was also trying to run the Android emulator by starting a debug session in VS2015 Community for a Xamarin project. VS2015 was running inside a Windows10 VM based on VMware Workstation 12 Pro hosted by Windows7 on a i7 CPU. I ran into the following error message:
"... The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to start the virtual machine 'VS Emulator 5-inch KitKat (4.4) XXHDPI Phone.andreas' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running (Virtual machine ID ...)."
Everything worked fine after activating the following flags in the virtual machine's processor settings section:
Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI
Virtualize CPU performance counters
(Preferred mode: Automatic)
I'm doing Microsoft's basic introduction to creating a Windows Phone 8 app, creating a "MiniBrowser" (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/windowsphone/develop/ff402526%28v=vs.105%29.aspx) to get a feel of using VSE and debugging on my WP8 (Nokia Lumia 920). I have Windows 8 64-bit on my laptop (not Pro, so I realize I cannot utilize the emulators; this is therefore my only way of testing and debugging).
However, trying to deploy my app through Application Deployment and VSE 2012 (Deploy Solution under the Build tab, Debug tab under my project properties) gives me this strange error - "Exception of type Microsoft.SmartDevice.Connectivity.PlatformNotFoundException was thrown."
I have followed all the directions under "About deploying and running apps on a Windows Phone device" in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsphone/develop/ff402565%28v=vs.105%29.aspx.
Googling and searching msdn and stackoverflow has not been successful, and it seems like no one else is encountering this problem. I feel like it should be a fairly simple and straightforward process to debug on my own phone... What am I doing wrong here?
EDIT: I downloaded the WP8 SDK and repaired my installation. I am no longer receiving this error.
I have created a windows forms application using C#.net 4.0 on Visual studio 2012.
App works great on windows 8 and windows 7 but when I try to run the same app on Windows XP I get following error message.
Following are the prerequisites for my app:
1. .net Framework 4.0
2. Windows Installer 4.5
3. ReportViewer 2010
4. MYSQL DB 5.6
5. Visual Basic PowerPack 10
I have installed all these pre-requistes on Windows XP. My 1 click setup installs the application correctly but on application Start up I am receiving error.
I also tried upgrading visual studio 2012 and then rebuilding and publishing the app but still the same error persists.
Following is the screen shot from the Application Event logger
Screenshot from Project's configuration manager
Screenshot from Project Properties
Can anyone suggest me what could be the issue.
If your program icon (or possibly any icons used by your program) has any images that are larger than 64x64 pixels, you can get this error on XP (in System.Drawing).
Check all your icon files and ensure that none contain images larger than 64x64
You Need Service pack 3 for XP and check the EXE build whether it might build for X64 and also check your XP machine is having .Netframework 4.0 change that into AnyCpu and once again build
the EXE and check with XP. and change your framework as .NetFramework 4.0
Are you targeting Mixed Platforms/Any CPU/x86? Can you try different build configurations?
Are you referencing any third party DLL's?
Can you catch and log details of the exception, or does the program fail to execute entirely?
I've had strange issues before when compiling for Mixed/Any CPU, and x86 machines throw a wobbler if the program isn't specifically targetted to x86.
i finally finished a proyect i was requested in my university with Lightswitch. Im ready to deploy (publish) next week, and i was JUST told that the people that will recieve the software, are using XP machines. I've read a lot of questions and lots of fixes, to get Lightswitch working on Windows XP, like:
Changing the DumpBin with "editbin vslshost.exe /SUBSYSTEM:WINDOWS,5.01 /OSVERSION:5.1"
deploy it as a desktop application with the services deployed to IIS (i dont think this will work because those are really old pc's)
install all the prerequisites manually and launch the ClickOnce application directly from deployment manifest file (.application)
create a sample ClickOnce application using Visual Studio 2010 OR Visual Studio 2008 with the same name as mentioned in Visual Studio 2012 and publish it. From the published location take the setup.exe bootstrapper and replace the existing setup.exe bootstrapper created using Visual Studio 2012
With all of this workarounds available, i NEED to ask, will this ultimately work? Can someone REALLY tell me that using one-or-all of this workarounds i WILL be able to deploy the application!?
Someone?
The 2-Tier Deployment issue on XP was also addressed in VS 2012 Update 2 IF you upgrade to a "V3" LightSwitch project by right-clicking on the root project in Solution Explorer and selecting "Upgrade Project". This updates the project to the "V3" project system, runtime and will use a much newer publish wizard. The version of VSLSHOST.exe that ships with VS 2012 Update 2 is compatible with XP.

I have a successfully deployed application using the 3-tiers running as an out-of-browser (desktop app) on XP. Initially I was going to do the 2-tier deployment, but I was unable to get a workaround to work.
So I have one server, which runs IIS as well as my SQL server (OS is Windows Server 2003, but doesn't have to be.)
The client machines range from Windows XP to Windows 7, and I haven't had any special problems with windows XP.
So I can definitely say XP will work as a client. I was unable to get it to run the middle tier (hence IIS on the server) but I didn't try every last idea I found, so I won't say it's impossible.
The two links I found most helpful in the process were

and

Hope that helps.
When I debug and step any windows phone app on my virtual machine I get the "No Source Available", "The current thread is not currently running code or the call stack could not be obtained".
This is regardless if I debug on the device or the emulator.
It seems like it breaks on the correct breakpoints thou, and continuing works fine.
Stepping through server code works fine.
The virtual machine is just set up for this and only contains Windows 8 (updated), Visual Studio 2012 Pro (complete, updated), Google Chrome, Start8 and Windows Phone SDK 8.0.
Repairing the Visual Studio installation solved the problem.
