I have a List of UserControl elements in a WP8 application page.
I'm trying to enable the UserControl itself to have different visual effect when it is in a selected state in the list.
I have created a DependencyProperty (IsHighlighted) in the UserControl, and I am now stuck trying to pass the ListBoxItem's IsSelected property into the UserControl.
<ListBox ItemsSource="{Binding MyItems}" SelectedItem="{Binding MySelectedItem, Mode=TwoWay}">
<ListBox.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate >
<userControls:MyControl IsHighlighted="{Binding Path=IsSelected ???}" />
</DataTemplate>
</ListBox.ItemTemplate>
</ListBox>
It could have been easy if the following was enabled in WP8:
{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource Mode=FindAncestor,AncestorType={x:Type ListBoxItem}}, Path=IsSelected}
But it's not enabled..
Tried many variations, and I am out of ideas. Anyone?
EDIT:
The following error appears on the console:
System.Windows.Data Error: BindingExpression path error: 'IsSelected' property not found on 'System.Windows.Controls.ContentPresenter' 'System.Windows.Controls.ContentPresenter' (HashCode=6915811). BindingExpression: Path='IsSelected' DataItem='System.Windows.Controls.ContentPresenter' (HashCode=6915811); target element is 'WP8.UserControls.MyViewControl' (Name='userControlObj'); target property is 'IsHighlighted' (type 'System.Boolean')
Super old thread, but in case someone else comes looking like I did.....
I had joy with:
"{Binding Path=IsSelected, RelativeSource={RelativeSource Mode=FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type ListBoxItem}}

I have an ItemsControl whose for the ItemTemplate DataTemplate contains a Button. I want the Command on the button to bind to a Command on the DataContext of the ItemsControl, not the ItemTemplate. I think the solution has to do with using RelativeSource, but my attempts so far have failed:
<ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Games}">
<ItemsControl.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<Button Command="{Binding Path=GameSelectedCommand, Source={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type ItemsControl}}}"
CommandParameter="{Binding}"
Style="{StaticResource MenuButtonStyle}"
Content="{Binding Name}"/>
</DataTemplate>
</ItemsControl.ItemTemplate>
</ItemsControl>
How can I get the Button to bind to the GameSelectedCommand of the ItemsControl's DataContext object?
You're setting the source of the binding to the ItemsControl itself. Therefore, you'll need to dereference the DataContext of the ItemsControl:
Command="{Binding DataContext.GameSelectedCommand, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type ItemsControl}}}"
How would you have known this? Take a look at your debug output window when running the app. You'll see a message along the lines of "Cannot resolve property 'GameSelectedCommand' on type 'ItemsControl'".
I have a DataGrid and want to bind the Header-property to a property of my windows DataContext but I did not get it working.
Binding can be such a pain as (for me) it is never clear which context this has when simply using Binding.
I know that the "Context" in the Binding={} is a single element of the DataGrids ItemsSource. But what is the "Context" for Header={Binding ???}?
I've already tried:
Header="{Binding Path=DataContext.MyProperty, RelativeSource={RelativeSource Self}}
Header="{Binding Path=DataContext.MyProperty, RelativeSource={RelativeSource TemplatedParent}}
Header="{Binding Path=DataContext.MyProperty, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type MyWindow}}}
Header="{Binding Path=DataContext.MyProperty, ElementName=MyWindowName}
I tried with and without Path but nothing is working.
For example, using the last one with ElementName I get the following binding-exception:
System.Windows.Data Error: 2 : Cannot find governing FrameworkElement or FrameworkContentElement for target element. BindingExpression:Path=DataContext.MyProperty; DataItem=null; target element is 'DataGridTextColumn' (HashCode=51072575); target property is 'Header' (type 'Object')
Is there any tool to check/change bindings at runtime? Or even to know what the current "Context" is?
Note: The DataGrid is inside a Mahapps.Flyout (not sure if this has something to say).
Since DataGridTextColumn or any other supported data grid columns are not part of visual tree of datagrid so they don't inherit the DataContext of datagrid. Since, they don't lie in visual tree so any try to get DataContext using RelativeSource won't work.
Solution - You can create a proxy element to bind the data context of window/control; use that proxy element to bind the Header of DataGridTextColumn.
<Grid>
<Grid.Resources>
<FrameworkElement x:Key="ProxyElement" DataContext="{Binding}"/>
</Grid.Resources>
<ContentControl Visibility="Collapsed" Content="{StaticResource ProxyElement}"></ContentControl>
<DataGrid
ItemsSource="{Binding Collection}"
AutoGenerateColumns="False">
<DataGrid.Columns>
<DataGridTextColumn Header="{Binding DataContext.MyProperty, Source={StaticResource ProxyElement}}" Binding="{Binding PropertyName}" />
</DataGrid.Columns>
</DataGrid>
</Grid>
I have a ListBox inside a HubSection, whose Items are bound to a class "players" added to my DefaulViewModel via code behind.
First I simply put a TextBox bound to the property "PlayerName" of my class "players".
Now I would like to add a ComboBox with some items that are NOT part of the class players.
Is it possible ? I thought that definind an ItemsSource in the ComboBox would sort of override the ItemsSource of the ListBox, but nothing displays.
The DataContext of the whole page is defined like so:
DataContext="{Binding DefaultViewModel, RelativeSource={RelativeSource Self}}"
Then the HubSection is like so:
<HubSection x:Name="HubSec1">
<DataTemplate>
<ListBox x:Name="ListBox1" ItemsSource="{Binding players}">
<ListBox.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<StackPanel>
<TextBox Text="{Binding Path=PlayerName, Mode=TwoWay}"/>
<ComboBox ItemsSource="{Binding Path=ListOfElements}"/>
</StackPanel>
</DataTemplate>
</ListBox.ItemTemplate>
</ListBox>
</DataTemplate>
</HubSection>
If I define the ComboBox in the same way but outside the ListBox, it will display the string elements of "ListOfElements" properly.
But in this ListBox, the ComboBox is empty. So my guess is that having defined an ItemsSource for the ListBox, it is not possible to override it.
I have tried to define a DataTemplate but was not successful doing so, but it might be the good solution (and I did not proceed properly)
What am I missing ?
Edit :
The ComboBox items is an ObservableCollection. It is not part of the "players" class.
Here is how I added these elements to the DefaultViewModel
DefaultViewModel.Add("players", players);
DefaultViewModel.Add("MyItemsList", ListOfElements);
You can walk up the visual tree and bind to an ancestors datacontext:
{Binding Path=PathToProperty, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type typeOfAncestor}}}
EX:
{Binding Path=ListOfItems, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type ListBox}}}
that should give you the datacontext that the listbox has, so assuming your ListOfItems exists in that data context.
Or you can name your control, and then bind to its datacontext by element name:
{Binding ElementName=mySourceElement,Path=ListOfItems}
It can be a little bit tricky to create a good working binding in Windows Apps. A widely used work around is to use the Tag property.
<ListBox x:Name="ListBox1" ItemsSource="{Binding players}" Margin="0,184,0,0" Tag="{Binding Path=ListOfElements}">
<ListBox.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<StackPanel>
<TextBox Text="{Binding Path=PlayerName, Mode=TwoWay}"/>
<TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Tag, ElementName=ListBox1}"/>
</StackPanel>
</DataTemplate>
</ListBox.ItemTemplate>
</ListBox>
A binding to an element wirh the specific name will work always. And the ListOfElements should be in the scope of the ListBox so you can use the Tag property as a proxy. If you need to bind more than one property, you can also use dummy XAML elements:
<Border Tag="{Binding ...}" Name="dummy1"/>
My WPF uses the MVVM approach. I'm trying to bind 2 controls within my list control
<ListBox ItemsSource="{Binding ParentDuplicate}" SelectedItem="{Binding SelectedParent, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}">
<ListBox.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<StackPanel>
<ContentControl Content="{Binding}" />
<Button Content="Delete me now"
Command="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource Mode=FindAncestor, AncestorLevel=1, AncestorType=Window}, Path=DeleteCommand}"
CommandParameter="{Binding FilePath}" />
</StackPanel>
</DataTemplate>
</ListBox.ItemTemplate>
</ListBox>
The problem I'm having, is the DeleteCommand is not binding (the Ouput window informs me as well)
System.Windows.Data Error: 4 : Cannot find source for binding with reference 'RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType='System.Windows.Data.Binding', AncestorLevel='1''. BindingExpression:Path=DeleteCommand; DataItem=null; target element is 'Button' (Name=''); target property is 'Command' (type 'ICommand')
If I move this button to outside the ListBox, then the binding works and the event fires so I know the issue must be with the ListBox (I'm guessing the problem is the ItemsSource prevents the binding to anything but the ItemsSource bound property (in this case, ParentDuplicate))
So, within the Button control, there are 2 properties being bound, DeleteCommand and FilePath
Both of these properties live within my single ViewModel. FilePath is a child of ParentDuplicate and this binds as desired. The issue is only with the DeleteCommand. What am I doing wrong?
Edit
When I use the Command="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource Mode=FindAncestor, AncestorLevel=1, AncestorType=Window}, Path=DeleteCommand} it is looking in my MainWindow code behind, not at the ViewModel. How do I make it use the ViewModel?
I tried
Command="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType=xmlnsViewModel:MainWindowViewModel}, Path=DeleteCommand}"
but the above also results in the same binding errors
The ancestor search finds the control, not the DataContext, so you'll need to tell your binding where to find the DeleteCommand property. If your ViewModel is the DataContext of the MainWindow then you can just use:
<Button Content="Delete me now"
Command="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource
Mode=FindAncestor, AncestorLevel=1, AncestorType=Window},
Path=DataContext.DeleteCommand}"
CommandParameter="{Binding FilePath}" />
I am using an MVVM approach, and I have an object from my ViewModel called DatabasesSubFrame which is DataTemplated to show a ListBox. I want to display a Button below the ListBox, which binds to both the currently SelectedItem, and a property on the DatabasesSubFrame object which is being DataTemplated.
I know how to refer to the currently selected item, by setting the DataContext on a shared ancestor with the ListBox and use {Binding /}. In this example the shared ancestor is a StackPanel. And if the DataContext wasn't explicitly set there I could easily bind to a property on the DatabasesSubFrame object by just doing {Binding SomeProperty}. However, if I do {Binding SomeProperty} within the explicitly set DataContext, it refers to the wrong DataContext.
How do I access the "original" DataContext here? I tried messing with RelativeSources and TemplatedParents but couldn't figure out how to fit them in.
<DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type VM:DatabasesSubFrame}">
<StackPanel DataContext="{Binding Databases}" >
<ListBox Name="DbInfoBox"
ItemsSource="{Binding}"
IsSynchronizedWithCurrentItem="True">
<ListBox.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<Label Content="{Binding ShortName}"/>
</DataTemplate>
</ListBox.ItemTemplate>
</ListBox>
<!-- Problem: The Command and V:CreateCommandBinding.Command are set incorrectly here. How do I access OpenDbCommand from the top-level DataTemplate's DataContext? -->
<Button Content="Open Database"
CommandParameter="{Binding /}"
Command="{Binding ???, Path=OpenDbCommand.Command}"
V:CreateCommandBinding.Command="{Binding ???, Path=DataContext.OpenDbCommand}"/>
</StackPanel>
</DataTemplate>
I think this question will help you to find the answer to yours. Another trick is to set the Name of the Window to something like "Root". You can then get at the window's original datacontext by using:
{Binding ElementName=Root, Path=DataContext.MyViewModelsProperty}
