Opening a Visual Studios 2015 project with 2013 - c#

I was using the trial of Visual Studios 2015 to develop a C# app. Now my trial has expired. I would like to continue developing the app in my licensed version of Visual Studios 2013. However, I can't seem to open the .sln. The file opens, but it say "Incompatible". Aside from copy pasting all of the code and re-configuring everything, is there another way I can open it?

You can use this solution here.
Just change the version VS2015 set on the solution file to the one used by VS2013. In doubt, just create an empty VS2013 project and check which one is it.
Luckily, VS2015 didn't change anything else and it will just work.

how to open solution file that create from Visual Studio 2019 to different computer that use Visual Studio 2017 ? my solution file is C# winform application , i try to copy it from vs19 to vs17 but when i open the solution file it load blank ? anyone know the how to make it work ?
If you create a solution in VS2017 it will round trip (assuming you don't use VS2019 only functionality).
(I am currently using VS2019 with a solution where about half the team, and some of our tooling is VS2017 only.)

"C# 2017 compiler could not be created" error message while opening project

I've Visual Studio 2017 community edition. I have a C# project created using Visual Studio 2015. When I try to open the project in VS 2017 I get an error message prompt:
--------------------- Microsoft Visual Studio
Project 'dataStructureInCSharp' could not be opened because the Visual C# 2017 compiler could not be created.
Please re-install Visual Studio.
--------------------------- OK
I'm trying to obtain help if anyone else has faced similar issue. I feel going the uninstall and then reinstall route is very costly for me and would try that option last if I've got no other resort.
What I've done so far :
Tried starting visual studio with administrative privileges
But problem remained same.
I tried creating a new console project solution from scratch but in that case I get very same error and an additional error error also shown below:
System Environment: Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1
You can try to close all VS 2017 instances and delete the folder %localappdata%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_xxxx\ComponentModelCache, then open VS to create a new Console project.
Or
please re-run the VS 2017 installer as administrator, click the icon beside ‘Launch’ button and choose ‘Repair’ to repair as shown below:
Just to brief the history of my problem, I had first installed Visual Studio(VS) 2017 community when it was in RC stage. This was first time when I saw the workload based UI of visual studio installation. Initially I simply chose .Net desktop development workload to get started as I was interested in creating only console applications to get my hands dirty.
Initially it was all working well. One fine day I added all other workloads I was interested in namely Universal Windows Platform Development, Azure Development, ASP.NET and web development,Node.js development, and Mobile development with .Net. I'm not sure if there any of the specific workloads to be blamed for the issue I've posted.
Just to avoid the case if RC and RTM release builds might not have messed up my entire environment, I simply uninstalled the entire stuff, rebooted my machine and installed it again from scratch from latest RTM release for Visual Studio Community.
I would strongly recommend that you first try possible solutions suggested by #Sara-MSFT before doing clean reinstall just in case if it works. It can save you couple of hours required in whole reinstallation process if it works.

This project(Visual Studio 2012 express) is incompatible with the current version of Visual Studio 2013 express

Am doing a back end project in C# in Visual Studio. My team mate had done it using Visual Studio 2012 express and everything seems to work there. But when i used git to clone it to my system where am using Visual Studio 2013 express, one part of the project says its incompatible with the current version of VS. I could clean and build the project, but was unable to run the project. I searched and found that one solution is to go to Programs and features, select VS, right click, select repair. But even after doing this, the problem persists. Is there any work around?
When I was learning ASP.NET MVC by Informit tutorials I was in the very similar situation. I downloaded the sample sources that was created in VS2013 but had VS2015 installed. It was some kind of bug \ magic, but VS didn't recognized some libraries in VS2015 even they were installed. What is more strange is the fact that when I decided to totally rewrite the project line by line it worked!
Of course, I tried to clean, rebuild, reinstall NuGet packages.
So, if you have an access to sources *.cs, then just try to create new project and copy-paste code.

Cant find Visual Studio Installer Projects on Visual Studio 2013

After finishing my C# application I had to make an installer. After seeing that the default installer projects are gone, i searched for a replacement.
I found the Visual Studio Installer Projects. I downloaded the file from here: https://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/9abe329c-9bba-44a1-be59-0fbf6151054d.
When i restarted Visual Studio, opened my project, clicked "add new project" and here is what I got:
Problem is that I cant find the setup project. I have tried repairing the install. I restarted Visual Studio several times.
My Question:
How can I find the installer project and why it's not working for me.
If I cant make it work, are there any alternatives ? (except InstallShield)
Additional info:
Visual Studio 2013 Community with update 4
Windows 8.1 64-bit
You could try Tools > Extensions and Updates and search for it:
Visual Studio setup projects no longer ship with Visual Studio
However, you can download them here.
Or use a third party library like WiX.
I had the same problem and it turns out that visual studio removed the support for installer projects in 2010.
but still you can download and install it in your version
VS2013
VS2015
VS2017

Visual Studio 2010 cannot open a 2010 solution that Visual Studio 2012 modified

Basically, I had a project that was written with Visual Studio 2010 Express in C#, I then tried out using Visual Studio 2012 Express with that file, and now VS2010 says:
"The selected file is a solution file, but was created by a newer version of this application and cannot be opened."
Now when I had looked up about this, Microsoft said that you can still use 2010 if you do not use anything that was VS2012 specific. Well, I had tried out the built in Testing that is in the VS2012, and that was the only thing that was VS2012 specific, but deleting that from my project (the Testing project), still left it saying that it was created by a newer version.
So, how do you make a VS2010 solution that VS2012 modified work with VS2010 again?
SP1 for VS 2010 is required to open VS 2012 modified solutions.

Personally I've never used it but I have it marked as a tool to use if I run into issues. Hope it helps!
This probably isn't the kind of answer you are looking for, but it has worked for me in the past for compatibility issues and such, so it's worth mentioning. If your project isn't too complicated, you can create a new project then copy and paste everything across, starting with form controls, and then moving to the code. It's a sloppy solution that doesn't scale well, but sometimes nothing else seems to work.
The response here by Andrew.Wu is very comprehensive

very old...but hope it can help someone...
Step 1: Go to your project location where the project's sln file is kept and then Right-click on it, choose "Properties". Uncheck "Read Only" as like given below:
Step 2: Again Go to the location where the project's sln file is kept and then Right-click on it to open it with notepad and change the "Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File, Format Version 12.00" to "Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File, Format Version 11.00" on the file.
you can change also the "Visual Studio 2012" to 2010
