I'm making a windows forms application and on startup of the application the cursor is in the wrong text box.
I've tried searching some other questions online, but nothing seems to work for me.
I've tried inputBox.Focus(); bot after the Initialize Component, I've also tried this in my input box method, and I've tried inputBox.Select(); in a few places as well. It doesn't seem to make a difference.
I've also seen that you can set the tab index of the text box to be zero, but unfortunately I don't understand. I can't find this option anywhere in visual studio. I figured this would be in the properties for the text box in the designer. Am I looking in the wrong place? Or should I be looking for a different solution?
Here's my code:
namespace Project_9
{
public partial class Form1 : Form
{
const int MAX = 10;
Bowling objectRef;
public Form1()
{
InitializeComponent();
objectRef = new Bowling(10);
}
private void aboutToolStripMenuItem_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Close();
}
private void aboutToolStripMenuItem1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
MessageBox.Show("Jonathan Spalding\nCS1400\nProject 9");
}
private void inputBox_KeyDown(object sender, KeyEventArgs e)
{
if (e.KeyData == Keys.Enter)
{
string text = inputBox.Text;
if (text == "")
{
highScoreBox.Text = objectRef.GetHighScorePlayer() + ": " + string.Format("{0:d}", objectRef.GetHighScore());
lowScoreBox.Text = objectRef.GetLowScorePlayer() + ": " + string.Format("{0:d}", objectRef.GetLowScore());
averageScoreBox.Text = string.Format("{0:f2}", objectRef.GetAverageScore());
}
else
{
inputBox.Clear();
objectRef.AddPlayer(text);
}
}
}
private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
inputBox.Focus();
}
}
}
Select the textbox. In the properties window find TabIndex (If you can not find it, sort the properties in A-Z as in the small red rectangle.
Make sure:
1. that the TabIndex is the smallest value comparing to the other controls (as in my example two comboboxes each one has a TabIndex value)
2. The TabStop value is True.
In the Load event
ActiveControl = inputBox;
You can set the TabIndex property to a value bigger than 0. The control wih the least value will focus on startup.
You can then set the TabIndex on the other controls so that when you press the tab key, the next control (with higher TabIndex) will get the focus.
In your form constructor you can use:
public Form1()
{
InitializeComponent();
inputBox.Focus();
}
Or
public Form1()
{
InitializeComponent();
inputBox.Focus();
inputBox.Select();
}
I think the best way is to set TabIndex by clicking with mouse on controls. Just go to view menu and then to TabIndexOrder menu option.
Then you can set TabIndex order just by clicking on the TabIndex represented on your form just the way you want to.
When you finish just select TabIndexOrder menu option again to exit helper.

I made a calculator, and now I have to make a calculator memory (event).
There are 4 components other than the calculator: one Textbox for the answer of the calculator, two Buttons for "M" and "M+", and one Lable to display the answer again.
When the user clicks the “M” button, the contents of the Answer TextBox should be copied to a memory variable. Also make it so that when the user moves the mouse over the label, the value in the memory variable will appear in this label, and then disappear, when the mouse moves away from the label. Also add one more button, an “M+” button. When the user clicks this button, the contents of the Results box will be added to Memory. You will need to use a Global Variable to store this data.
My problem is that the label doesn't appear when the mouse over the label, and also it doens't disappear when the mouse leave the label. How can I fix it?
And also, is this way the right way to use the Global variable?
Below is my code (I just put the code for "M" and "M+" buttons, not the code for the calculator).
private String ans;
private Double answer;
private Double answerPlus;
private void btnM_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
ans = txtDisplay.Text;
answer = double.Parse(ans);
lblblank.Text = answer.ToString();
}
private void lblblank_MouseEnter(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
lblblank.Show();
lblblank.Text = answer.ToString();
}
private void lblblank_MouseLeave(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
lblblank.Hide();
}
private void btnMplus_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
answerPlus = answer + double.Parse(ans);
lblblank.Text = answerPlus.ToString();
}
Storing variables
The way you store your values is fine.
Events
Once you call .Hide() the next MouseEnter/MouseLeave-event will not be triggered anymore. What you could do is to take a panel, or any layout element as a wrapper/parent-element for the label and then adjust your event-callbacks to something like that:
private void panel_MouseEnter(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
lblblank.Show();
lblblank.Text = answer.ToString();
}
private void panel_MouseLeave(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
lblblank.Hide();
}
Edit
~~~
What does it mean that any layout element as a parent-element for the
label? Could you explain more?
What I meant was to just create a new panel (or layout-element) and put the label into it as a child. See the picture below:
If you set that up correctly, the code snippet I posted above will work just fine. This solution does not prevent the MouseLeave event from triggering when your mouse enters the label. Therefore you could use an alternative solution using the MouseMove event.
Alternative
using System;
using System.Windows.Forms;
using System.Drawing;
namespace WindowsFormsApp1
{
public partial class Form1 : Form
{
public Form1()
{
this.InitializeComponent();
// Subscribe to the MouseMove event
this.panel.MouseMove += this.panel_MouseMove;
}
private void panel_MouseMove(object sender, MouseEventArgs e)
{
// Checks if current mouse position is within the panel
if (this.panel.Bounds.Contains(new Point(e.X, e.Y)))
{
// Current mouse position within the panel
this.label.Show();
return;
}
// Current mouse position outside the panel
this.label.Hide();
}
}
}
I noticed that by programmatically selecting a Tab in the Tab control selects a control contained in the tab page selected.Is it possible to change this behaviour. I have a control in a tabpage that I do not want to be selected when the its tab page is selected from a button click. I have a simple form with a tab control and two tab pages. When button1 is clicked the tab page 2 is selected but so is the datagridview contained in that tab page.
public partial class Form1 : Form
{
public Form1()
{
InitializeComponent();
}
private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
dataGridView1.GotFocus += DataGridView1_GotFocus;
}
private void DataGridView1_GotFocus(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
//this event is called from button1_click
}
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
tabControl1.SelectedTab = tabPage2;
}
}
By default when you select a tab (or even when you start a form) the control which is the first in your tab order is automatically focused. I am assuming this is what is happening here.
You can solve this by simply unfocusing the datagridView in question. There are multiple ways to do this. Firstly you can set focus to the control that you wish to be selected instead of the dataGridView. This can be done by:
myControl.Focus = True;
Or alternatively if you want non of the controls to be selected you can set the active control to Null:
ActiveControl = NULL;
Note: ActiveControl is a property which contains the current active control.
As to where this code should be placed. That is totally dependent upon you. You can do it as soon as you change the tab in the button click event. This is what I would prefer.
I am sure there are other kludges as well to acheive the same. Hope this helps.
Here is code to select tab
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
// we can select tab by tab name
tabControl1.SelectTab("tabPage2");
tabControl1.SelectedIndex = 1;
tabControl1.TabPages[0].Hide();
tabControl1.TabPages[1].Show();
}
I have two Group Boxes grpMeter and grpTag. I have to place grpMeter over grpTag.. both need same location and size..
On button click, I have to make them visible alternately. Is it possible? I tried many times but only 1 group box becomes visible. Maybe because of the overlapping problem. I tried with panel, but the same problem arises. Is there any solution?
public void ShowMeter()
{
grpMeter.Visible = true;
grpTags.Visible = false;
}
public void ShowTag()
{
grpTags.Visible = true;
grpMeter.Visible = false;
}
Place both group boxes next to each other so that they don't overlap and see if it works then. If you made it work, don't move the one group box with the mouse, but select it only and then set the coordinates manually in the Properties list.
That way you can prevent the one group box from accidentially becoming the child of the other group box.
Try this logic inside a button_click event:
private void btn_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (grpTags.Visible)
ShowMeter();
else
ShowTag();
}
Try this:
private void button_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
grpMeter.Visible = !grpMeter.Visible;
grpTags.Visible = !grpTags.Visible;
}
See the code below. The button Click will toggle visibilty. Also it's important that you set one of the groupboxes as visible and the other one as invisible in your constructor
using System;
using System.Windows.Forms;
namespace TestForm
{
public partial class Form1 : Form
{
public Form1()
{
InitializeComponent();
//This is important. Set one of them to be Visible and the other one to be invisible
grpMeter.Visible = false;
grpTags.Visible = true;
}
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
grpMeter.Visible = !grpMeter.Visible;
grpTags.Visible = !grpTags.Visible;
}
}
}
I am not sure but what you are looking for seems like FlowLayoutPanel. Then you can put group boxes next to each other and positioning will be handled automatically. This prevents accidentally putting one GroupBox into another or shifting locations. Also provides an easier working at design time.
One of the good way is to use RadioButton. Take two Radio buttons and place it inside a groupbox.
Something like this would work:
private void rdMeter_CheckedChanged(Object sender, EventArgs e)
{
grpMeter.Visible = rdMeter.Checked;
grpTag.Visible = !rdMeter.Checked;
}
private void rdTag_CheckedChanged(Object sender, EventArgs e)
{
grpTag.Visible = rdTag.Checked;
grpMeter.Visible = !rdTag.Checked;
}
I am using a windows form and within the form i have a user control with two labels, one that has a message ENTER AMOUNT and the other where I am putting the values typed by the user (like when you go to an ATM) it starts showing the number .. it works fine if i dont have any other controls on the user control.. but the moment i add a button it does not work, it wont start showing the numbers as I use my numeric key pad.. but if i remove whatever button i added it works again... Here is my user control code.
public partial class OperationAmount : UserControl
{
public OperationAmount()
{
InitializeComponent();
}
private int _inputNumber = 0;
private void OperationAmount_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
}
private void Form_KeyAmountPressed(object sender, KeyPressEventArgs e)
{
if (!Char.IsNumber(e.KeyChar))
{
return;
}
else if (lblOperationAmount.Text.Length > 9)
{
return;
}
else
{
_inputNumber = 10 * _inputNumber + Int32.Parse(e.KeyChar.ToString());
ReformatOutput();
}
}
private void ReformatOutput()
{
lblOperationAmount.Text = String.Format("{0:0.00}", (double)_inputNumber / 100.0);
}
}
Probably the new control steals the keypresses from your Form_KeyAmountPressed method because now it has the focus and receive the event KeyPress.
A simple workaround would be to add the method Form_KeyAmountPressed also at the KeyPress event of the button. Try also to set the TabStop property of the button to false. (not sure if this has any effect when the button is the only control that can get focus on your user control).
I have two textboxes, and a button. When I press the button, I want to know where my current caret is (either of the two boxes). I need this to know where to insert a certain text. I tried textbox1.Focused; textbox1.enabled but neither worked. How should I implement this? Thanks
Keep in mind that when you click the button, your textboxes will no longer have focus. You'll want a method of keeping track of what was in focus before the button's click event.
Try something like this
public partial class Form1 : Form
{
private TextBox focusedTextbox = null;
public Form1()
{
InitializeComponent();
foreach (TextBox tb in this.Controls.OfType<TextBox>())
{
tb.Enter += textBox_Enter;
}
}
void textBox_Enter(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
focusedTextbox = (TextBox)sender;
}
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (focusedTextbox != null)
{
// put something in textbox
focusedTextbox.Text = DateTime.Now.ToString();
}
}
}
There's a very simple way to do this.
Your requirement is simple since you only have two textboxes.
You can assign a class-wide string variable that holds when textbox1_GotFocus() is invoked as well as textbox2_GotFocus().
So if that textbox GotFocus() is called you assign a value.
Then put a condition for the class-wide string variable in the button that if the class-wide variable has a value of thats kind, that textbox is populated whatever you want to put in the textbox.
It worked for me so I believe it should work on you.
