I have the following input:

I want to remove space from start of starting and end from a string.
The result should be: "i am a string"
How can I do this in c#?
String.Trim
Removes all leading and trailing white-space characters from the current String object.
Usage:
txt = txt.Trim();
If this isn't working then it highly likely that the "spaces" aren't spaces but some other non printing or white space character, possibly tabs. In this case you need to use the String.Trim method which takes an array of characters:
char[] charsToTrim = { ' ', '\t' };
string result = txt.Trim(charsToTrim);

You can add to this list as and when you come across more space like characters that are in your input data. Storing this list of characters in your database or configuration file would also mean that you don't have to rebuild your application each time you come across a new character to check for.
NOTE
As of .NET 4 .Trim() removes any character that Char.IsWhiteSpace returns true for so it should work for most cases you come across. Given this, it's probably not a good idea to replace this call with the one that takes a list of characters you have to maintain.
It would be better to call the default .Trim() and then call the method with your list of characters.
You can use:
String.TrimStart - Removes all leading occurrences of a set of characters specified in an array from the current String object.
String.TrimEnd - Removes all trailing occurrences of a set of characters specified in an array from the current String object.
String.Trim - combination of the two functions above
Usage:
string txt = " i am a string ";
char[] charsToTrim = { ' ' };
txt = txt.Trim(charsToTrim)); // txt = "i am a string"

txt = txt.Replace(" ", ""); // txt = "iamastring"
I really don't understand some of the hoops the other answers are jumping through.
var myString = " this is my String ";
var newstring = myString.Trim(); // results in "this is my String"
var noSpaceString = myString.Replace(" ", ""); // results in "thisismyString";
It's not rocket science.
txt = txt.Trim();
Or you can split your string to string array, splitting by space and then add every item of string array to empty string.
May be this is not the best and fastest method, but you can try, if other answer aren't what you whant.

I need to extract the number 12345 alone and I don't need the numbers 9677125 and 35478.

Here is the regex for extracting 5 digit number in the beginning of the string:
^(\d{5})&
If length is arbitrary:
^(\d+)&
If termination pattern is not always &:
^(\d+)[^\d]
Based on the Sayse's comment you can simply rewrite as:
^(\d+)
and in case of the termination is some number(for instance 999) then:
^(\d+)999
You don't need regex if you only want to extract the first number:
string temp = "12345&refere?X=Assess9677125?Folder_id=35478";
int first = Int32.Parse(String.Join("", temp.TakeWhile(c => Char.IsDigit(c))));

If the number you want is always at the beginning of the string and terminated by an ampersand (&) you don't need a regex at all. Just split the string on the ampersand and get the first element of the resulting array:
String temp = "12345&refere?X=Assess9677125?Folder_id=35478";
var splitArray = String.Split('&', temp);
var number = splitArray[0]; // returns 12345
Alternatively, you can get the index of the ampersand and substring up to that point:

I want to retrieve characters separated by a specific delimiter.
Example :
Here, I want to access the string between the " " delimiters. But I want the 2nd set of characters between "".

You can just find the first quote, and use your approach from there:

"[\\\n\\\\t]" is a class that describes \ n and t as individual characters so you lose all n & t characters.
Use: "\\\\\\n|\\\\\\t"
You can just use string.Replace for that.
destination = source.Replace("\\\n", "").Replace("\\\t", "");
But note that will leave two spaces between "hemat" and "test", as well as between "line" and "test". If you want to compress the spaces as well you can use this regular expression.
var destination = Regex.Replace(source, #"\s*(\\\n|\\\t)\s*", " ");
Notice the use of # so you don't have to double up on the backslashes.
Or assuming your string is actually
source = "hemant \\n test new line \\t test tab";
That is a backslash character followed by the letter "n" and a backslash followed by the letter "t". Then you could do something like this.

Just use source.Replace("\\", " ").Replace("\n", " ").Replace("\t", " "); no need for regex here.

the better choice is to use a Split and Join method.
Easy in Linq :

Removes any given name from the list.
How about
str = str.Replace(",phani,", ",");
This, however, does not work if "phani" is the last item in the string. To get around this, you could do this:
string source = "...";
source += ","; // Explicitly add a comma to the end
source = source.Replace(",phani,", ",").TrimEnd(',');
This adds a comma, replaces "phani" and removes the trailing comma.
A third solution would be this:
str = String.Join(",", str.Split(',').ToList().Remove("phani").ToArray());
Try to use with comma instead of;
string str = "santhosh,ravi,phani,phani123,praveen,sathish,prakash";
str = str.Replace(",phani,", ",");
Console.WriteLine(str);
Output will be;
santhosh,ravi,phani123,praveen,sathish,prakash

As Davin mentioned in comment, this won't work if phani is last item in the string. Silvermind's answer looks like the right answer.

Output:

You may use the regular expression, but you have to take care of cases when your string starts or ends with the substring:
var pattern = #",?\bphani\b,?";
var regex = new Regex(pattern);
var result = regex.Replace(input, ",").Trim(',');
Shorter notation could look like this:
var result = Regex.Replace(input, #",?\bphani\b,?", ",").Trim(',');
Explanation of the regular expression: ,?\bphani\b,? matches the word phani, but only if preceded and followed by word-delimiter characters (because of the word boundary metacharacter \b), and it can be (but doesn't have to be) preceded and followed by the comma thanks to ,? which means none or more comma(s).
At the end we need to remove possible commas from the beginning and end of the string, that's why there's Trim(',') on the result.
