I have a legacy Winform application (quite large and monolithic) where we now host WPF controls for the newer functionality.
After some interaction and updating, I get it into a state were all the WPF controls (only) stop updating. Ie if I set a property in the bound view model, the UI does not update. Also controls such as splitters and sliders do not work. Event if I invoke a WPF dialog, the radio button on it does not work.
All the Winforms controls work fine. It is although there is some WPF layer that has stopped functioning.
I have checked everything I can think of, ie everything occurring on correct threads, rendering in SoftwareOnly etc. Pausing the application, I see no locked threads, or anything else suspicious. I don't see any exceptions.
I am now at a loss on how to diagnose what is wrong here.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can diagnose such an issue? Ie is there anything common like this that can occur with WPF on Winforms? I have never come across this before!
Thanks in advance for any help here.
[UPDATE1]
I just noticed, if I resize the WPF winforms parent container, THEN the WPF control updates..

So I have an odd issue while trying to use a WPF TextBox with SpellCheck enabled inside a Winforms form, using the custom control defined in this post.
This works just fine, I've tried using it in my own sandbox project and it looks great. The problem is when I try to replace the Winforms TextBoxes inside one of our existing forms. The SpellCheck context menu is "trapped" inside the control, so all I can see are the up/down arrows of the menu.
I'm not too familiar with Winforms, as I mostly work with WPF, so I'm having a hard time determining the problem. The text box shown above is the custom control as mentioned in the linked post. The control is contained in a forms TableLayoutPanel. How can I get the context menu to expand and actually be visible?
Edit
First, to clarify, the context menu appears normally when displayed in a console application that opens the form. I did a little more testing and created a new web project (what the original problem project is) with a button that opens the form, and then the problem behavior occurs. What difference between the console application and the web application would cause this?
Edit 2
I tried the suggestions in this post, thinking maybe the context menu really was just being automatically sized incorrectly (to fit the parent control). But none of those solutions seemed to make any difference either.
Edit 3
After using snoop to look at the differences between the working context menu (windows application) and the not-working one (xbap) the only difference I could see was that the DesiredSize of the xbap instance's context menu has a smaller size, I just have no idea why.
The wpf control is a control which is hosted in winforms via the ElementHost.
Hence it lives within the area provided by the parent.
The only way is to expand it, is to change the size of the parent. Give it a try by creating a winform supersized textbox as a quick debug example. Note whether the size change works on not. If it does can the GUI accommodate that change? I can't answer that.
In a WPF application I have a user control that hosts a win forms RichTextBox control using the WindowsFormsHost. The user control is used in a panel that is made visible at a certain time. The problem is that the forms control is displayed a few moments before the containing panel. I tried delaying the display of the RTB until the panel is shown, but then the UI freezes for 2-4 seconds when the forms control is loaded. Please help if you know a solution to make the control load faster. Thanks!
You should use a profiler to see where most of the time is consumed, have a look here: What Are Some Good .NET Profilers?
I managed to find a solution for this :) Actually, the WindowsFormsHost had a Transparent background set, and just removing the transparency solved the performance problem.
I am doing a UI automation for a WPF application using the Microsoft UI Automation library and it works well.
However my app has four screens in a TabControl. Even when I click the tab item through code its child control tree isnt populated. The only control I can see is the "thumb" Control. Same happens when I see the control tree with UISpy.
However if the window is clicked then all the controls appear. As a Workaround I am simulating a mouseclick through code and it works. I wanted to know if there is some better way of doing it.
I ran into a problem similar to this. What was happening was some data was being retrieved on threads and the controls were not generated at the point automation peers were generated. I would suggest if you have access to the code base for the application you are attempting to automate looking into whether threading is being used. In my specific case it was because BeginInvokes were used to retrieve the data, I switched them to Invokes and it worked fine.
Also from what I could tell the reason the controls were being show on mouse over was because the tool tip generated a popup and caused the automation peers to be updated.
Why don't you click the control using mouse events if that is what works.
(Now, if you still are having that problem..)
How to simulate Mouse Click in C#?
I have a similar problem to this question regarding painting of wpf controls
The application I work on is a rather large Windows forms threaded application with several wpf user controls throughout the application. The problem occurs in a plugin of the application where a third party c++ library is called on a separate thread, WndProc is overriden to get the progress updates from the third party library. I have yet to determine the exact scenario that causes the problem but similar to the above mentioned question, after a few runs the wpf controls fails to paint and update.
Setting the width of the elementhosts does solve the painting issue for most of the controls but after this all the wpf controls in the application seems to become 'unresponsive' - visually... the progress bars fails to show progress (though the value does change), scrollbars does not respond, selecting an item in the listview does not highlight it(it does get highlighted after resizing and it does actually get selected - you just can see it is selected) the treeviews does not paint after the resizing, it only shows a black background where the treeview should be (though when I click on the items where they should be in the treeview, the events does get trigerred)
I know I should probably find out the root of the problems that causes this first (its hapening rather randomely and is hard to trap) - allthough putting a breakpoint in the WndProc method does seem to cause it to fail on a regualar base...
What I was hoping for is a way to 'reactivate'/refresh all the other controls throughout the application... I am an intermediate wpf, c# developer and dont really know enough yet about the messaging and events that happens in the background to use them effectively ... my thought is that some event or message that tells wpf to redraw must be broken or interrupted or something - how can I determine what is broken and maybe reactivate it??
Any advice will be much appreciated...
Thank You
It could be that the event that causes the WPF control graph render is never being processed because of that WndProc override.
Since you are inter-oping with WinForms, you can force the events to process by performing a call to Application.DoEvents(); somewhere. Perhaps after you update the progress bar.
For some strange reason, my toopltip in the VS 2008 C# winforms application shows up behind the form! It's very frustrating and I can't figure out what I should do. Anyone face this before? Ideas?
(PS - I'm doing a toolstip.show programmatically within the form)
There are a few things you might want to check:
Make sure the tooltip knows what its parent window is.
Make sure the window the tooltip belongs to is in the foreground (no, this isn't a requirement for displaying tooltips, it just helps debug.)
Try giving focus to the owner of the tooltip. If that fixes the problem, then there's probably an ownership problem with your tooltip.
Try bringing your page element to the front. (Right click on element, bring to front). Is this happening on all tool tips you have configured? And no, I have not seen this before
There is a similar (and known) problem with tooltips appearing behind the Windows task bar. The problem is sporadic and I have never seen a solution. If you're also seeing this behavior sporadically (and I suggest that you try this on different machines), then it may be related. Otherwise, if the problem is consistent across multiple machines, let's see your code, because you're probably doing something wrong.
I have a similar issue. I have a user control written as C++ WTL, being used in a C# .NET2 app. If the control is just on the form then the controls tooltips work fine, however if the user control is on a panel or in a group then the tooltip is behind. I've tried changing the WTL code to force the tip to the front, this works but causes issues with lost focus/selection in other controls.
This problem is almost always caused by the window being TopMost. Try using SetWindowPos to set your tooltip to HWND_TOPMOST. I haven't tried this though...
I've seen this issue happen in both Windows.Forms and Delphi (native windows) based applications, caused by the interaction of "stay on top" with the Windows API.
Essentially, marking a form as TopMost makes it stay on top of some windows, but not others - Window management has more than two distinct levels.
What I found is this: my applications would behave themselves when run normally, with tooltips showing on top. Problems would occur when switching to- and from- other applications - somehow the "TopMost" of the windoww would become "very-ultra-top-most" (non-technical term ;-) ) with the tooltips appearing behind the window.
Having described the problem, I'd like to offer you a solution - but I never did find a good one. Sigh.
Hope that the additional information will be enough for you to find the solution you need.
I have seen this happen on Windows XP, particularly on the taskbar.
Are you sure it's an issue with your application, rather than the OS?
