Why build action doesn't work in Visual Studio - c#

I work with project written in C#, I use Visual Studio 2019. There are .aspx views in the project. I need to exclude them from build but they should stay in the solution since some tests are linked to them. I use build action: none, according to official documentation that means: The file isn't part of the build in any way. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/ide/build-actions?view=vs-2022 . But after the build, when i navigate in browser to these pages - browser starts to download them, which means that they were included into build.
What am I doing wrong? How to exclude these files from the build?

The ASPX files are compiled at run-time from the original location in the source code for local debug/run scenarios (there are no copies for those). From developer's point of view these files already have "Build:none" for local debugging purpose. Changing action to "none" does not in any way impact the original content/location of the file so it will still be located at the same place at the run-time on dev box and render at run-time as if it still built.
Where you'll see an impact of "Build:none" is "published" version of the site - with "none" files will not show up in published version and hence will not work from "published" version.

How to debug into .NET framework source code

How can one debug the .NET framework source code using Visual Studio 2017?
There are some questions here on stackoverflow about this topic, but even after reading all of them, I still wasn't able to make it work.
I thought it would be useful to present an up-to-date, working solution about how to debug .NET framework source code.
I would like to solve it without using any external tools (e.g. dotPeek as source server).
First of all, I tested it using Microsoft Visual Studio Enterprise 2017, Version 15.9.7 and via .NET Framework 4.7.2. Though, I think it should work on Community edition the same way.
Steps to take:
Go to Tools / Options / Debugging / General, and perform these settings:
check Enable .NET Framework source stepping (this will automatically disable "Enable Just My Code"; if not, do it manually)
uncheck Require source files to exactly match the original version
check Enable source server support
Go to Tools / Options / Debugging / Symbols, and:
in the upper listbox check Microsoft Symbol Servers
click Empty Symbol Cache button (to make sure you will get the correct symbols)
select Load all modules, unless excluded radio button at the bottom
Download the source of the .NET framework version your project is targeting, from the https://referencesource.microsoft.com/download.html site.
Unpack the downloaded archive (zip) file to a convenient path on your PC.
Debug your application; set a breakpoint to the line of .NET code you wish to debug, and step to the desired code line with the debugger.
Note: your application may start slower since it will download PDBs from the internet.
Press Step Into (F11 by default). If your settings are correct, this will cause some delay (if your VS crashes (like mine did), Empty Symbol Cache again). Eventually it will ask for the sources of the given file, e.g. dictionary.cs.
Two things can happen here:
A) It asks for the source file (.cs) in a file dialog. Go to step 7.
B) It says whatever.cs not found, and there is a link that says "Browse and find whatever.cs...". Click that link.
Select the corresponding .cs file on your disk (you can search for the file on the OS).
Note: I had to restart VS several times until it "did not crash" while looking for sources, this is most likely a bug in VS.
If you did everything correctly, you will find yourself debugging the .NET source code.
Note: Since VS saves the path you entered for the source files, you can stop debugging or restart VS; it will work next time, too.
Besides, you do not have to manually select any more source files within the framework, because the VS will use the source folder you entered and will search in source files there.
Many people wondering why they can't step into source although they does set the checkboxes as described above. I'm, too.
Because you can extract dotnet sources to any location, Visual Studio isn't able to know about them and the reason can't be the source files itself (why Visual Studio doesn't find the files).
But some dll's are browseable, some not (through double clicking in Visual Studios stack view or context menu > goto source). This brought me to the assumption, that the .pdb itself must be the reason. If you look into a file which works (e.g. notepad), you see at beginning a list of strings with file pathes (source files). In files, which doesn't work, the files starting immediatelly with binary data.
For some reason microsoft doesn't create her .pdb's with full debug information in every build process. But why not - good question! g
In short: you have to search a dll version of your file (which you like to debug) which contains FULL DEBUG INFORMATION. This is also the reason why context menu disables "goto source".
I'm replacing this file temporary in global assembly cache for time of debug. This works for me.

Perhabs somebody can create a public database (wiki), which everyone can add files and versions for which full debug information are available?

Using JetBrains dotPeek as the symbol server worked for me. (4.6.2 framework) (I did everything mentioned in this thread and many more threads, and nothing worked)

JetBrains dotPeek decompiles your actual .NET DLLs, then hosts a symbol server that you download symbols from in Visual Studio. After a pretty slow download, then a restart of VS, I was able to breakpoint and step into the code.
You can find the path to your .NET DLLs in the "Modules" window when debugging in VS. Enter this into dotPeek. Then Host Symbol server in dotPeek. Then add http://localhost:33417 as your symbol server in VS symbol settings. then load those symbols. it takes a minute and a VS restart, but works.

Visual Studio 2013 only builds HTML changes, not C# changes

I am building a personal website using asp.NET's webforms in visual studio 2013 express for web and am following this tutorial:

My page is structured exactly the same as in the website, I have changed some minor stuff to make it my own but the structure in terms of the C# classes and how the interact with the HTML are exactly the same.
I got to section 5 of the tutorial "Display Data Items and Details" and everything was working fine. I've used git a lot in the past so I decided to create a repository for this project so I can access it at work if I feel like.
Suddenly now when I make changes to the C# classes it won't build. It's even stranger because I if I make a change on an HTML file the change is built. In section 3 of the tutorial we learnt how to make the 'product' classes which are displayed on the products page. If I want to change one of the product names for example, when I build the change is not there. Simultaneously I went and changed some info in the HTML for the contact page, IT CHANGES when I build. Why wont the C# changes take effect when I build any more?
I am relatively new to both asp.NET and visual studio. The HTML changes when I build and the C# does not. When I change either I can see in solution explorer that there is a red tick for pending changes. Why would only the HTML pending change be included in the build and not the C#? How do I ensure that the build is actually building the version I see in my editor window?

I do not know if I found the original cause but I found a solution/workaround. I realized that the classes mentioned above were grabbed by the html page from the page's database. The .mdf file for the solution was not being rebuilt whenever I cleaned and built so I physically deleted it and rebuilt the solution and voilla my C# changes occurred. I am still fairly new to this whole thing, can someone explain what the .mdf file does and why it wasn't being rebuilt?
Check your .cs files properties on the properties window in visual studio to make sure their Build Action is set to "Compile", Things that are not set to "Compile" do not get compiled. How MSBuild treats project items depends entirely on their build action. CS files default to "Compile" when you make them, but if you changed them yourself that would be why it doesn't update. Also CS files placed in the App_Start folder default to "Content" and they are compiled by ASP.Net when the Application Starts, so if you changed something in App_Start you need to reset the site.
Not exactly sure what is the problem, but I would do a right mouse click on the solution in Solution Explorer->Clean Solution, then do another build and see if that helps.

Debugging previously compiled ASP.Net Web App without visual studio

So, I've had to rework a web app on one of our servers, a legacy app, that needed to get new branding via a common master page, where it previously had none. The page displays ok, but there's a form on it that calls a method in a compiled dll which allows the user to download a document. This throws an error, but the error is vague (mentioning a null reference). We have the source code but I don't have visual studio installed on my machine and even if I did we suspect it may have something to do with the server environment, and the server is not set up to run project files, just compiled web apps. One of my colleagues thought that by removing the dll, the app would just use the cs files and compile that at run time. That didn't work, and another colleague suggested turning debugging on in web.config, which we did, but still no go. He also mentioned that debugging required pdb files, but I don't see any in the source code we have. If I could get this working on the server just using the cs files vs. the dll, I could at least attempt to debug what's going on, any ideas on how to get that working?
There seems to be a good deal of confusion here about how ASP.NET applications work.
First, .CS files are meaningless to IIS. IIS knows about files containing markup. It also knows that the assemblies contained in the bin folder represent the server-side code that handles the incoming requests and generates the outbound responses.
In most cases, when a site is deployed to a production server, the .CS files are not included, because they are just noise on the server, useless file clutter that have no bearing whatsoever on the execution of the application.
Now, you're kind of lucky, because you have the source files there. You can, actually, force a recompilation of the cached assemblies. To do this, open the site's web.config file and add some whitespace (a single space) to the end of the first line. Then save the file. This will cause ASP.NET to clear its cache and rebuild the site.
This isn't guaranteed to get rid of your problem. Like you say, the problem could be somewhere else. What I would strongly suggest is that you download the site in its entirety, install Visual Studio (get a free express edition if you have to), and DEBUG the darned thing.
If you can't run it in a debugger and watch it execute, you're just guessing.
PS If this thing isn't under source code control, get it there, ASAP.

Cannot debug under Visual Studio Express anymore

I used to be able to debug using Visual C# Express 2010 with no problem before. However, since I've opened my project using MonoDevelop (to port it under MacOS), I can't seem to be able to debug anymore.
The exact error message is available below:
A lot of people says to go in the configuration manager, which I'm familiar with, however, I can't seem to find it in the Express version.
Since you didn't have this issue prior to opening in Monodevelop, it more than likely changed something within the solution and/or project files. There are a number of posts on stackoverflow...

... that talk about missing symbols. However, based on the information provided about monodevelop, I'd venture to guess that the IDE changed something within the solution and/or project files.
If your solution is under source control and you don't see any differences in these files, let me know. Otherwise, you could create a new blank solution/project file (from Visual C# Express 2010) and re-add all your files to it to get the default settings back and see if that resolves your issue.
EDIT: Also, keep in mind that there are ".user" files that I guess "might" have an effect on build/debugging configurations. If re-adding your files to blank solution/project files doesn't work make sure all the "extra" files like ".user" are not in the directory. Usually files like ".csproj.user", and ".suo". I've never had an issue deleting these they store local configuration changes that are not usually checked into source control.
I had same problem with Symbols when I added some dll to my project so what I did was to manually adding them. you can try going to tools > option > Debugging > Symbols and from there you can add the file root (in this case monoDevelop) and it automatically looks for all .pdb files and adds them to your environment. After rebuild it should be Okay.

What to do now, this time??
I hate VS and this symbolic gibberish that never seem to have same solution (if it once was logic) twice. The screendump below says what it says.
As soon as I F5/Start the web project, the breakpoint going yellow. This ONLY affect the aspx.cs file that being changed. The other aspx.cs files can have breakpoints.
When I do rebuild/build all DLL and PDB files are created just fine. They have same compile time and are in same directory. Module-Windows i VS says the symbols are loaded perfectly. Well, yeah, try bite me!
I can tell, all symbolic is working just fine, until I was about doing changes inside those aspx.cs files (which was some time ago since last time). If I reset back the file, the breakpoint are working. If I try to make changes in another file, the problem appears there.
It simply appears like that the symbolic file generator don't understand changes maded in aspx.cs files..

This sometimes happens if you have changed the starting url in the Web -> Start Action -> Start URL to a different location. It could also be something in the Web -> Servers pane where something is set other as expected.
Also make sure the website in IIS (if you have configured IIS) is located to the right directory (where your project builds the output), otherwise it can't start debugging either.
I've found a good hint (see my comment higher in this thread).
The WEBAPP have, as seen above, an _dll path.
This _dll path are there because this project has dll files shared with other projects. This means save space and don't have copies of same files for several projects.
Though,
This raise problems beause the webapp still are output/copy files to it's own sub bin/ directory. And even worse, not ALL needed dlls, which make error when the running web project (due to missing xxWeb.dll, which copies to _dll bin).
Accepting the fact to use standard bin/ fixed the problem this time. Why? The answer on that will not be in this thread, sorry. Someone with an idea would course make a comment here. In general, this isn't a drawback because the webb project binaries should be at the end of reference tree..

and Run devenv /resetsettings
