I have 3 projects in my VS solution. One of them is a Web app, the second one is a Windows Service and the last one a Setup project for my Web app.
What I want is by the end of the installation of the web app in my setup project, within my custom action to try and install my windows service given that I have the location of the assembly by then.
I found several errors in the code that you reused and have fixed these and also cleaned it up a little. Again, the original code is taken from here.

Please let me know if anyone finds anything wrong with this code!
Ok, here is what REALLY worked for me, it has been tested on multiple machines with different OS ( Vista, XP, Win2k, Win2003 server )
The code has been taken from here so full credit goes to whoever wrote this piece of code.
Once you add the dll or source file into your project make sure to add the ServiceTools namespace and then you have access to some very handy functionality such as...
//Installs and starts the service
ServiceInstaller.InstallAndStart("MyServiceName", "MyServiceDisplayName", "C:\\PathToServiceFile.exe");
//Removes the service
ServiceInstaller.Uninstall("MyServiceName");
//Checks the status of the service
ServiceInstaller.GetServiceStatus("MyServiceName");
//Starts the service
ServiceInstaller.StartService("MyServiceName");
//Stops the service
ServiceInstaller.StopService("MyServiceName");
//Check if service is installed
ServiceInstaller.ServiceIsInstalled("MyServiceName");
I hope this helps.
Please have a look at this article.
Sometimes you may want to install a Windows Service programmatically, but the target machine does not have InstallUtil.exe.
Add a reference to System.Configuration.Install
Use the code below.
Note that the exeFileName is the InstallerClass .exe and not the ServiceClass .exe.
public static void InstallService(string exeFilename)
{
string[] commandLineOptions = new string[1] { "/LogFile=install.log" };
System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller installer = new System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller(exeFilename, commandLineOptions);
installer.UseNewContext = true;
installer.Install(null);
installer.Commit(null);
}
To uninstall:
public static void UninstallService(string exeFilename)
{
string[] commandLineOptions = new string[1] { "/LogFile=uninstall.log" };
System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller installer = new System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller(exeFilename, commandLineOptions);
installer.UseNewContext = true;
installer.Uninstall(null);
}
After creating an instance of an installer class for my service (very basic) all I had to do is to call :
ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper(new string[] {
Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location });
to install it and
ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper(new string[] { "/u",
Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location });
to uninstall the service. The calling code is, here, in the same assembly as the service executable.
to get the service to install through command line all I had to do is to connect this to the executable though command line arguments and test for System.Environment.UserInteractive to know if it is the service executing or someone trying to install-uninstall it and voila... no funky interop stuff... no pointers leaking...
Total about 20 lines of code spread over two classes did the trick.
to replace InstallUtil just take a look at ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper
By using the Topshelf project you can install by calling your executable:
MyService.exe install
Topshelf also takes care of other Windows Service plumbing.
Since I was faced with the challenge to install services programmatically which run under a certain user. I extended the InstallAndStart method to make use of lp and lpPassword...
Not much but might help.
public static void InstallAndStart(
string serviceName,
string displayName,
string fileName,
string username,
string password)
{
IntPtr scm = OpenSCManager(ScmAccessRights.AllAccess);
try
{
IntPtr service = OpenService(
scm,
serviceName,
ServiceAccessRights.AllAccess);
if (service == IntPtr.Zero)
service = CreateService(
scm,
serviceName,
displayName,
ServiceAccessRights.AllAccess,
SERVICE_WIN32_OWN_PROCESS,
ServiceBootFlag.AutoStart,
ServiceError.Normal,
fileName,
null,
IntPtr.Zero,
null,
username,
password);
if (service == IntPtr.Zero)
throw new ApplicationException("Failed to install service.");
try
{
StartService(service);
}
finally
{
CloseServiceHandle(service);
}
}
finally
{
CloseServiceHandle(scm);
}
}
I used Lars answer to manage my service and it works fine. But I needed to pass arguments to service and it took me a couple of hours to find out how to do it. So I decided to post altered class with ability to start service with parameters:

In this article I read all posts and comments Bu still I don't know How can I set Account Type and StartType method when I gonna add windows service. This code example works fine my side its just add a service own local system) But I prepare Setup program I must think StartMode and User Account Type method because of customers system.
there is every appearance that ServiceBootFlag enum provide StartType but Account Type still a problem.
[DllImport("advapi32.dll", EntryPoint = "CreateServiceA")]
private static extern IntPtr CreateService(IntPtr hSCManager, string
lpServiceName, string lpDisplayName, ServiceRights dwDesiredAccess, int
dwServiceType, ServiceBootFlag dwStartType, ServiceError dwErrorControl,
string lpBinaryPathName, string lpLoadOrderGroup, IntPtr lpdwTagId, string
lpDependencies, string lp, string lpPassword);
Use below code to install windows service using C#:
public void InstallWinService(string winServicePath)
{
try
{
ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper(new string[] { winServicePath});
}
catch (Exception)
{
throw;
}
}
Another method could be using SC.exe from command prompt:
System.Diagnostics.Process process = new System.Diagnostics.Process();
System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo startInfo = new
System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo();
startInfo.WindowStyle = System.Diagnostics.ProcessWindowStyle.Hidden;
startInfo.FileName = "cmd.exe";
startInfo.Arguments = "/C sc create MyService binpath=\"c:\\...\\MyService.exe\"";
process.StartInfo = startInfo;
process.Start();

EnumerateService | Lock | QueryLockStatus | ModifyBootConfig)
}
This is my initial code to check MyService is installed or not. But on this point
IntPtr scman = OpenSCManager(ServiceManagerRights.Connect);
I am getting an Exception like "System.AccessViolationException: 'Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.' "
Is it because of the [DllImport("advapi32.dll")]
can i get any assistance on this??
I have a standard .NET windows service written in C#.
Can it install itself without using InstallUtil?
Should I use the service installer class? How should I use it?
I want to be able to call the following:
MyService.exe -install
And it will have the same effect as calling:
InstallUtil MyService.exe
Yes, that is fully possible (i.e. I do exactly this); you just need to reference the right dll (System.ServiceProcess.dll) and add an installer class...
Here's an example:
[RunInstaller(true)]
public sealed class MyServiceInstallerProcess : ServiceProcessInstaller
{
public MyServiceInstallerProcess()
{
this.Account = ServiceAccount.NetworkService;
}
}
[RunInstaller(true)]
public sealed class MyServiceInstaller : ServiceInstaller
{
public MyServiceInstaller()
{
this.Description = "Service Description";
this.DisplayName = "Service Name";
this.ServiceName = "ServiceName";
this.StartType = System.ServiceProcess.ServiceStartMode.Automatic;
}
}
static void Install(bool undo, string[] args)
{
try
{
Console.WriteLine(undo ? "uninstalling" : "installing");
using (AssemblyInstaller inst = new AssemblyInstaller(typeof(Program).Assembly, args))
{
IDictionary state = new Hashtable();
inst.UseNewContext = true;
try
{
if (undo)
{
inst.Uninstall(state);
}
else
{
inst.Install(state);
inst.Commit(state);
}
}
catch
{
try
{
inst.Rollback(state);
}
catch { }
throw;
}
}
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
Console.Error.WriteLine(ex.Message);
}
}
Take a look at the InstallHelper method of the ManagedInstaller class. You can install a service using:
string[] args;
ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper(args);
This is exactly what InstallUtil does. The arguments are the same as for InstallUtil.
The benefits of this method are that it involves no messing in the registry, and it uses the same mechanism as InstallUtil.
You can always fall back to the good old WinAPI calls, although the amount of work involved is non-trivial. There is no requirement that .NET services be installed via a .NET-aware mechanism.
To install:
Open the service manager via OpenSCManager.
Call CreateService to register the service.
Optionally call ChangeServiceConfig2 to set a description.
Close the service and service manager handles with CloseServiceHandle.
To uninstall:
Open the service manager via OpenSCManager.
Open the service using OpenService.
Delete the service by calling DeleteService on the handle returned by OpenService.
Close the service and service manager handles with CloseServiceHandle.
The main reason I prefer this over using the ServiceInstaller/ServiceProcessInstaller is that you can register the service with your own custom command line arguments. For example, you might register it as "MyApp.exe -service", then if the user runs your app without any arguments you could offer them a UI to install/remove the service.
Running Reflector on ServiceInstaller can fill in the details missing from this brief explanation.
P.S. Clearly this won't have "the same effect as calling: InstallUtil MyService.exe" - in particular, you won't be able to uninstall using InstallUtil. But it seems that perhaps this wasn't an actual stringent requirement for you.
Here is a class I use when writing services. I usually have an interactive screen that comes up when the service is not called. From there I use the class as needed. It allows for multiple named instances on the same machine -hence the InstanceID field
Sample Call
IntegratedServiceInstaller Inst = new IntegratedServiceInstaller();
Inst.Install("MySvc", "My Sample Service", "Service that executes something",
_InstanceID,
// System.ServiceProcess.ServiceAccount.LocalService, // this is more secure, but only available in XP and above and WS-2003 and above
System.ServiceProcess.ServiceAccount.LocalSystem, // this is required for WS-2000
System.ServiceProcess.ServiceStartMode.Automatic);
if (controller == null)
{
controller = new System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController(String.Format("MySvc_{0}", _InstanceID), ".");
}
if (controller.Status == System.ServiceProcess.ServiceControllerStatus.Running)
{
Start_Stop.Text = "Stop Service";
Start_Stop_Debugging.Enabled = false;
}
else
{
Start_Stop.Text = "Start Service";
Start_Stop_Debugging.Enabled = true;
}

To install a service, run the InstallAndStart command as follows:
SystemControl.InstallAndStart(
"apache",
"Apache Web Server",
#"""c:\apache\bin\httpd.exe"" -k runservice"
);
Make sure the account that is running the program has permission to install services. You can always 'Run As Administrator' on the program.
I have also included several commands for non-api access which do not install or remove services, but you can list them and control several (start, stop, restart). You really only need to elevate permissions for installing or removing services.
There are a couple of commands for getting and setting environment variables as well, such as OPENSSL_CONF or TEMP. For the most part, the parameters and method names should be pretty self-explanatory.
In the case of trying to install a command line application as a Windows service try the 'NSSM' utility. Related ServerFault details found here.
Process QProc = new Process();
QProc.StartInfo.FileName = "cmd";
QProc.StartInfo.Arguments ="/c InstallUtil "+ "\""+ filefullPath +"\"";
QProc.StartInfo.WorkingDirectory = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("windir") + #"\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\";
QProc.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = false;
// QProc.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = true;
QProc.StartInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = true;
QProc.Start();
// QProc.WaitForExit();
QProc.Close();
I have the following problem:
From a service I need to start an application in a user session. No human user log on that machine, since it is a server. Launched application must have a session != 0.
Current "solution"
I used a scheduled task at machine startup, that task launch ( in session 0, of course ) an application launching a Remote Desktop logon on the same machine: this creates a user session > 0 and in the user startup the is the final application to launch. It works, but too tricky.
Is there some smartest way? It is critical that I can reuse a user session already on since there is potentially no user logged on.
MAJOR UPDATE
Well after a lot of research and partial successes, and also thanks to some SysAdmin inflexibility about creating an user for a specific pourpose, I decided to use OpenGL instead of WPF for render the 3d portion broken in Session 0.
Surprisingly it took less than expected. I think having this question as a reference could be useful to other who want try to render a Viewport3D from a service.
I'm not sure if this will work, but maybe this answer helps in your case.
Use the class from the answer I link i provided and the following method (with the appropriate values):
public static void EnableVideoDrivers(bool enable)
{
// every type of device has a hard-coded GUID, put here the one for
// video drivers
Guid videoGuid = new Guid("{device GUID}");
// get this from the properties dialog box of this device in Device Manager
string instancePath = #"Device Instance Path";
DeviceHelper.SetDeviceEnabled(videoGuid, instancePath, enable);
}
Here's a list of Popular Device Class GUIDs.
I'm not sure I understand correctly your needs, but maybe just starting process with given credentials and redirect input and output is what you need. Starting process with given credentials:
Process p = new Process();
p.StartInfo = new ProcessStartInfo(fileName, args);
p.StartInfo.UserName = userName;
p.StartInfo.Password = pass;
p.Start();
You may also need to redirect input and output of the application. That problem is well described on CodeProjecgt in this artice.
This is how I start a process for a particular usersession from a Local windows service.
It uses C#, with some DLL imports from kernel32.dll, wtsaspi.dll, userev.dll, and advapi32.dll.
For context, my code will search all user sessions. In my scenario, my service is running on a Windows Terminal server and wants to keep a particular app "alive" in each user's session. Meaning, if we check and its not running anymore, we restart it.
Here is the program logic (abbreviated), this is how you call the method that starts the user process:
foreach(var sesh in ProcessExtensions.GetSessions().Where(r => r.State == "Active").ToList())
{
var running = procs.Any(r => r.ProcessName == filename && r.SessionId == sesh.SessionId);
if (!running)
{
try
{
ProcessExtensions.StartProcessForSession(sesh.SessionId, (string)item, "/restart", System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName((string)item), true);
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
Trace.TraceWarning("Error: {0}", ex);
}
}
}
Here is the implementation of ProcessExtensions where all of the good stuff is.
Disclaimer - I did not write this code, This is an example I found online and adjusted it to my needs. If you authored the original post. Apologies for the lack of footnote.

//Installs and starts the service
ServiceInstaller.InstallAndStart("MyServiceName", "MyServiceDisplayName", "C:\\PathToServiceFile.exe");
//Removes the service
ServiceInstaller.Uninstall("MyServiceName");
//Checks the status of the service
ServiceInstaller.GetServiceStatus("MyServiceName");
//Starts the service
ServiceInstaller.StartService("MyServiceName");
//Stops the service
ServiceInstaller.StopService("MyServiceName");
//Check if service is installed
ServiceInstaller.ServiceIsInstalled("MyServiceName");
I hope this helps.
Please have a look at this article.
Sometimes you may want to install a Windows Service programmatically, but the target machine does not have InstallUtil.exe.
Add a reference to System.Configuration.Install
Use the code below.
Note that the exeFileName is the InstallerClass .exe and not the ServiceClass .exe.
public static void InstallService(string exeFilename)
{
string[] commandLineOptions = new string[1] { "/LogFile=install.log" };
System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller installer = new System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller(exeFilename, commandLineOptions);
installer.UseNewContext = true;
installer.Install(null);
installer.Commit(null);
}
To uninstall:
public static void UninstallService(string exeFilename)
{
string[] commandLineOptions = new string[1] { "/LogFile=uninstall.log" };
System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller installer = new System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller(exeFilename, commandLineOptions);
installer.UseNewContext = true;
installer.Uninstall(null);
}
After creating an instance of an installer class for my service (very basic) all I had to do is to call :
ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper(new string[] {
Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location });
to install it and
ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper(new string[] { "/u",
Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location });
to uninstall the service.
Not much but might help.
public static void InstallAndStart(
string serviceName,
string displayName,
string fileName,
string username,
string password)
{
IntPtr scm = OpenSCManager(ScmAccessRights.AllAccess);
try
{

if (service == IntPtr.Zero)
service = CreateService(

ServiceAccessRights.AllAccess,

finally

}
}

[DllImport("advapi32.dll", EntryPoint = "CreateServiceA")]
private static extern IntPtr CreateService(IntPtr hSCManager, string
lpServiceName, string lpDisplayName, ServiceRights dwDesiredAccess, int
dwServiceType, ServiceBootFlag dwStartType, ServiceError dwErrorControl,
string lpBinaryPathName, string lpLoadOrderGroup, IntPtr lpdwTagId, string
lpDependencies, string lp, string lpPassword);
Use below code to install windows service using C#:
public void InstallWinService(string winServicePath)
{
try
{
ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper(new string[] { winServicePath});
}
catch (Exception)
{
throw;
}
}
Another method could be using SC.exe from command prompt:
System.Diagnostics.Process process = new System.Diagnostics.Process();
System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo startInfo = new
System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo();
startInfo.WindowStyle = System.Diagnostics.ProcessWindowStyle.Hidden;
startInfo.FileName = "cmd.exe";
startInfo.Arguments = "/C sc create MyService binpath=\"c:\\...\\MyService.exe\"";
process.StartInfo = startInfo;
process.Start();
