How to install a service programmatically in C# - c#

I am having a Form : InstallerForm.cs
public partial class InstallerForm : Form
{
private void InstallerForm_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
//Check if service is installed
ServiceInstaller.ServiceIsInstalled("MyServiceName");
}
}
public class ServiceInstaller
{
private const int STANDARD_RIGHTS_REQUIRED = 0xF0000;
private const int SERVICE_WIN32_OWN_PROCESS = 0x00000010;
[StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)]
private class SERVICE_STATUS
{
public int dwServiceType = 0;
public ServiceState dwCurrentState = 0;
public int dwControlsAccepted = 0;
public int dwWin32ExitCode = 0;
public int dwServiceSpecificExitCode = 0;
public int dwCheckPoint = 0;
public int dwWaitHint = 0;
}
[DllImport("advapi32.dll", EntryPoint = "OpenSCManagerA")]
private static extern IntPtr OpenSCManager(ServiceManagerRights dwDesiredAccess);
public static bool ServiceIsInstalled(string ServiceName)
{
IntPtr scman = OpenSCManager(ServiceManagerRights.Connect);
try
{
IntPtr service = OpenService(scman, ServiceName,
ServiceRights.QueryStatus);
if (service == IntPtr.Zero) return false;
CloseServiceHandle(service);
return true;
}
finally
{
CloseServiceHandle(scman);
}
}
}
[Flags]
public enum ServiceManagerRights
{
Connect = 0x0001,
CreateService = 0x0002,
EnumerateService = 0x0004,
Lock = 0x0008,
QueryLockStatus = 0x0010,
ModifyBootConfig = 0x0020,
StandardRightsRequired = 0xF0000,
AllAccess = (StandardRightsRequired | Connect | CreateService |
EnumerateService | Lock | QueryLockStatus | ModifyBootConfig)
}
This is my initial code to check MyService is installed or not. But on this point
IntPtr scman = OpenSCManager(ServiceManagerRights.Connect);
I am getting an Exception like "System.AccessViolationException: 'Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.' "
Is it because of the [DllImport("advapi32.dll")]
can i get any assistance on this??

How to install/uninstall service using .NET classes? [duplicate]

I have 3 projects in my VS solution. One of them is a Web app, the second one is a Windows Service and the last one a Setup project for my Web app.
What I want is by the end of the installation of the web app in my setup project, within my custom action to try and install my windows service given that I have the location of the assembly by then.
I found several errors in the code that you reused and have fixed these and also cleaned it up a little. Again, the original code is taken from here.

Please let me know if anyone finds anything wrong with this code!
Ok, here is what REALLY worked for me, it has been tested on multiple machines with different OS ( Vista, XP, Win2k, Win2003 server )
The code has been taken from here so full credit goes to whoever wrote this piece of code.
Once you add the dll or source file into your project make sure to add the ServiceTools namespace and then you have access to some very handy functionality such as...
//Installs and starts the service
ServiceInstaller.InstallAndStart("MyServiceName", "MyServiceDisplayName", "C:\\PathToServiceFile.exe");
//Removes the service
ServiceInstaller.Uninstall("MyServiceName");
//Checks the status of the service
ServiceInstaller.GetServiceStatus("MyServiceName");
//Starts the service
ServiceInstaller.StartService("MyServiceName");
//Stops the service
ServiceInstaller.StopService("MyServiceName");
//Check if service is installed
ServiceInstaller.ServiceIsInstalled("MyServiceName");
I hope this helps.
Please have a look at this article.
Sometimes you may want to install a Windows Service programmatically, but the target machine does not have InstallUtil.exe.
Add a reference to System.Configuration.Install
Use the code below.
Note that the exeFileName is the InstallerClass .exe and not the ServiceClass .exe.
public static void InstallService(string exeFilename)
{
string[] commandLineOptions = new string[1] { "/LogFile=install.log" };
System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller installer = new System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller(exeFilename, commandLineOptions);
installer.UseNewContext = true;
installer.Install(null);
installer.Commit(null);
}
To uninstall:
public static void UninstallService(string exeFilename)
{
string[] commandLineOptions = new string[1] { "/LogFile=uninstall.log" };
System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller installer = new System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller(exeFilename, commandLineOptions);
installer.UseNewContext = true;
installer.Uninstall(null);
}
After creating an instance of an installer class for my service (very basic) all I had to do is to call :
ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper(new string[] {
Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location });
to install it and
ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper(new string[] { "/u",
Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location });
to uninstall the service. The calling code is, here, in the same assembly as the service executable.
to get the service to install through command line all I had to do is to connect this to the executable though command line arguments and test for System.Environment.UserInteractive to know if it is the service executing or someone trying to install-uninstall it and voila... no funky interop stuff... no pointers leaking...
Total about 20 lines of code spread over two classes did the trick.
to replace InstallUtil just take a look at ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper
By using the Topshelf project you can install by calling your executable:
MyService.exe install
Topshelf also takes care of other Windows Service plumbing.
Since I was faced with the challenge to install services programmatically which run under a certain user. I extended the InstallAndStart method to make use of lp and lpPassword...
Not much but might help.
public static void InstallAndStart(
string serviceName,
string displayName,
string fileName,
string username,
string password)
{
IntPtr scm = OpenSCManager(ScmAccessRights.AllAccess);
try
{
IntPtr service = OpenService(
scm,
serviceName,
ServiceAccessRights.AllAccess);
if (service == IntPtr.Zero)
service = CreateService(
scm,
serviceName,
displayName,
ServiceAccessRights.AllAccess,
SERVICE_WIN32_OWN_PROCESS,
ServiceBootFlag.AutoStart,
ServiceError.Normal,
fileName,
null,
IntPtr.Zero,
null,
username,
password);
if (service == IntPtr.Zero)
throw new ApplicationException("Failed to install service.");
try
{
StartService(service);
}
finally
{
CloseServiceHandle(service);
}
}
finally
{
CloseServiceHandle(scm);
}
}
I used Lars answer to manage my service and it works fine. But I needed to pass arguments to service and it took me a couple of hours to find out how to do it. So I decided to post altered class with ability to start service with parameters:

In this article I read all posts and comments Bu still I don't know How can I set Account Type and StartType method when I gonna add windows service. This code example works fine my side its just add a service own local system) But I prepare Setup program I must think StartMode and User Account Type method because of customers system.
there is every appearance that ServiceBootFlag enum provide StartType but Account Type still a problem.
[DllImport("advapi32.dll", EntryPoint = "CreateServiceA")]
private static extern IntPtr CreateService(IntPtr hSCManager, string
lpServiceName, string lpDisplayName, ServiceRights dwDesiredAccess, int
dwServiceType, ServiceBootFlag dwStartType, ServiceError dwErrorControl,
string lpBinaryPathName, string lpLoadOrderGroup, IntPtr lpdwTagId, string
lpDependencies, string lp, string lpPassword);
Use below code to install windows service using C#:

}
}
Another method could be using SC.exe from command prompt:
System.Diagnostics.Process process = new System.Diagnostics.Process();
System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo startInfo = new
System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo();
startInfo.WindowStyle = System.Diagnostics.ProcessWindowStyle.Hidden;
startInfo.FileName = "cmd.exe";
startInfo.Arguments = "/C sc create MyService binpath=\"c:\\...\\MyService.exe\"";
process.StartInfo = startInfo;
process.Start();

GetLogicalDrives for \\tsclient\

I am currently working on a custom explorer and would like to allow the user to use the explorer on a remote computer, but still access the drives on their own computer.
Now, I have already read a lot of information on this subject and apparently I need to use WNetOpenEnum and WNetEnumResource to get an enumeration of network resources (see this thread). Unfortunately, I have not yet been successful in doing so.
So I was wondering if there is an easier way to access the paths of the drives.
One possibility would be to simply check all common names for their existence (\\tsclient\C , \\tsclient\D etc.). Not a very good one, though.
So before I get any further into making WNetEnumResource work, I thought I'd check to see if I've overlooked something that makes it easy to return all tsclient paths. Any help is welcome.
Thanks in advance.
Finally found a working solution:

C# - How to find all handles associated with current Process

I want to find which files is currently opened by Excel, Word of PDF process.
In x64dbg i can see info about process and can see needed file, but C# and WMI looks like do not allow to get such information.
The handle.exe is not very good solution, I do not want to use it and parse data.
So is there any way to do it using C# and WMI, if not, then what Win32 API I can use to find Handles associated with process.
The ntdll.dll ->NtQueryInformationProcess it is allows me to get address of process but how to use it to read Handles?
Thanks to all, I have found a solution.NtQueryObject hang when FileTypePipe
So there is a lot of solutions in the internet but most of them have problem with hanging when getting name for FileTypePipe :)

Creating a new Windows Service on windows form button click event

I have a Win Form Application, from where I want to create/generate a new windows service on button click. When ever a user clicks on that button, a windows service should be generated performing some task. If it is possible, how to do?
The Win Form App I have, actually process some data files. The user dose some setting for the data file like apply some constraints and mapping of data file columns with the SQL table and column. In the last this application should generate a service that should process such data files using that settings(already saved in DB).
My actually question is, is it possible to generate a windows service??
how it will process the file, its another thing. Focus on question.
I will assume that you are refering to installing a Windows Service.
As you may know, when you create a Windows Service (from Visual Studio), you will write some code for Start / Stop methods (the code that the service will run) but if you actually want to run the service, you have to install it, as you can see in this post.
Then, after you install it, you can start it by going to Services -> Select your service -> Start.
If this is your scenario, then yes, you can do this from a C# app, using this [1] API that I found on the web.
Now, using this API, you can install and even start your service. However, in order to perform something useful, you need to send some data to it. This can be done very easy using WCF (there are plenty examples on the web).

How to install a windows service programmatically in C#?

//Installs and starts the service
ServiceInstaller.InstallAndStart("MyServiceName", "MyServiceDisplayName", "C:\\PathToServiceFile.exe");
//Removes the service
ServiceInstaller.Uninstall("MyServiceName");
//Checks the status of the service
ServiceInstaller.GetServiceStatus("MyServiceName");
//Starts the service
ServiceInstaller.StartService("MyServiceName");
//Stops the service
ServiceInstaller.StopService("MyServiceName");
//Check if service is installed
ServiceInstaller.ServiceIsInstalled("MyServiceName");
I hope this helps.
Please have a look at this article.
Sometimes you may want to install a Windows Service programmatically, but the target machine does not have InstallUtil.exe.
Add a reference to System.Configuration.Install
Use the code below.
Note that the exeFileName is the InstallerClass .exe and not the ServiceClass .exe.
public static void InstallService(string exeFilename)
{
string[] commandLineOptions = new string[1] { "/LogFile=install.log" };
System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller installer = new System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller(exeFilename, commandLineOptions);
installer.UseNewContext = true;
installer.Install(null);
installer.Commit(null);
}
To uninstall:
public static void UninstallService(string exeFilename)
{
string[] commandLineOptions = new string[1] { "/LogFile=uninstall.log" };
System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller installer = new System.Configuration.Install.AssemblyInstaller(exeFilename, commandLineOptions);
installer.UseNewContext = true;
installer.Uninstall(null);
}
After creating an instance of an installer class for my service (very basic) all I had to do is to call :
ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper(new string[] {
Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location });
to install it and
ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper(new string[] { "/u",
Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location });
to uninstall the service.
Not much but might help.
public static void InstallAndStart(
string serviceName,
string displayName,
string fileName,
string username,
string password)
{
IntPtr scm = OpenSCManager(ScmAccessRights.AllAccess);
try
{
IntPtr service = OpenService(
scm,
serviceName,
ServiceAccessRights.AllAccess);
if (service == IntPtr.Zero)
service = CreateService(
scm,
serviceName,
displayName,
ServiceAccessRights.AllAccess,
SERVICE_WIN32_OWN_PROCESS,
ServiceBootFlag.AutoStart,
ServiceError.Normal,
fileName,
null,
IntPtr.Zero,
null,
username,
password);
if (service == IntPtr.Zero)
throw new ApplicationException("Failed to install service.");
try
{
StartService(service);
}
finally
{
CloseServiceHandle(service);
}
}
finally
{
CloseServiceHandle(scm);
}
}

[DllImport("advapi32.dll", EntryPoint = "CreateServiceA")]
private static extern IntPtr CreateService(IntPtr hSCManager, string
lpServiceName, string lpDisplayName, ServiceRights dwDesiredAccess, int
dwServiceType, ServiceBootFlag dwStartType, ServiceError dwErrorControl,
string lpBinaryPathName, string lpLoadOrderGroup, IntPtr lpdwTagId, string
lpDependencies, string lp, string lpPassword);
Use below code to install windows service using C#:
public void InstallWinService(string winServicePath)
{
try
{
ManagedInstallerClass.InstallHelper(new string[] { winServicePath});
}
catch (Exception)
{
throw;
}
}
Another method could be using SC.exe from command prompt:
System.Diagnostics.Process process = new System.Diagnostics.Process();
System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo startInfo = new
System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo();
startInfo.WindowStyle = System.Diagnostics.ProcessWindowStyle.Hidden;
startInfo.FileName = "cmd.exe";
startInfo.Arguments = "/C sc create MyService binpath=\"c:\\...\\MyService.exe\"";
process.StartInfo = startInfo;
process.Start();
